Cal looks to cruise past I-AA Sacramento State

Sacramento St (0-0) at No. 19 California (0-0) 5:00 pm EST -

BERKELEY, California (Ticker) - No. 19 California should experience few difficulties breaking in new players Saturday when it hosts Division I-AA Sacramento State.

The Golden Bears, who went 10-2 last season, lost quarterback Aaron Rodgers and running back J.J. Arrington to the NFL but might not miss a beat offensively.

Joseph Ayoob, a junior college All-American, will fill in for Rodgers, and while tar-in-the-making Marshawn Lynch will take over for Arrington after averaging an astonishing 8.8 yards per carry as a true freshman last year.

The overhauled receiving corps is highlighted by DeSean Jackson, the MVP of last season's high school All-American game, and JUCO transfer Lavelle Hawkins, Ayoob's teammate at City College of San Francisco.

Defensive tackle Brandon Mebane is the only returning starter from the defensive line. End Nu'u Tafisi, another JUCO transfer, was impressive in the spring. The linebackers are a relative weakness, but the secondary is excellent, led by cornerback Harrison Smith and strong safety Donnie McCleskey.

The Hornets went 3-8 last season and tied for sixth in the eight-team Big Sky Conference. They lost star wide receiver Fred Amey, who ranked fourth all-time in Division I-AA history with 4,049 receiving yards, and quarterback Ryan Leadingham to graduation.

Brad Tredway is the most experienced returning quarterback for Sacramento State, which does return 17 starters, including nine all-conference selections.

It is the first meeting between the schools.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

This right here is why the the Big Sky all-conference teams are such a joke. I swear anybody who started a game last year made one of the teams.
