Not only did Idaho go with them, but I believe (based on traffic I read on VandalVenue a couple years ago) that they went as a package at the command of the legislature and/or regents. In other words, Boise's legal authority to move up was contingent on Idaho's moving up too.Ponycat wrote:raincat wrote: Boise State escaped aloneDid you not notice that Idaho went with them to D1, and Idaho was considered that better program at the time.

Not to quibble, but I'm not sure I agree that Idaho was the better program at the time they moved up. Idaho was always a regular season title contender, but they always seemed to fizzle in the playoffs. BSU, on the other hand, won a national title in 1980, and made it to the title game in 1994 (2 years before both teams moved up). I'm not sure about overall winning percentages, but at least based on playoff performances, I think you can argue that BSU was the better program.Ponycat wrote:Did you not notice that Idaho went with them to D1, and Idaho was considered that better program at the time.

Somewhere along the line, before they both moved to I-A, BSU was on the wrong end of a Streak at the hands of Idaho. I don't know the exact particulars, just that it went on a long time, the Idaho guys rubbed it in, and it embittered the BSU guys (does any of this sound familiar?).Grizlaw wrote:Not to quibble, but I'm not sure I agree that Idaho was the better program at the time they moved up . . . But that would be a regular season rivalry and your point is to measure them by playoff performance.

Yeah, that may be the case; I don't really remember to be honest. I guess I never really paid attention to the head-to-head rivalry between the schools -- all I remember is that they both seemed like they were usually in contention during the regular season, but BSU made some deep playoff/title runs, and Idaho never really did.griz8791 wrote:Somewhere along the line, before they both moved to I-A, BSU was on the wrong end of a Streak at the hands of Idaho. I guess maybe Idaho was better overall, though -- the playoff runs are all I really remember.

In the 1980s to early 90s, Idaho won something like 12 or 14 in a row over BSU. I lived in Boise at the time and Vandal alumni loved it. Idaho was also typically better than BSU in basketball, at least until Bobby Dye came to BSU. Idaho made the sweet 16 with a great team in the early 80s.
Idaho has not come close to matching their overall success since they moved up. Pretty much a doormat in everything now. I have always wondered if the losing in football has also hurt their other programs-ie, Idaho now has the perception of being a losing school due to FB that may be affecting recruiting in other sports???

Idaho was the first of the 2 to post winning seasons, win a conference championship and play in a bowl game after moving to I-A. Boise State struggled their first couple years in I-A, going 2-10 ('96), 4-7 ('97), 6-5 9'98), then winning the Big West 2 consecutive years at 10-3 ('99) and 10-2 ('00) before moving to the WAC. Idaho started 6-5 ('96), 5-6 ('97) 9-3 (Big West Champs in '98), 7-4 ('99) and 5-6 ('00) before getting dumped in the Sun Belt.
I like to hate Idaho as much as anyone, but now that they are in the WAC, with DE as coach, I don't think we will have Idaho to kick around anymore, and in 10 years Idaho will be held as an example of a former I-AA making a successful transition.

The whole issue of moving to I-A is clouded with many unknowns. But the original post in this thread is a little misleading, because the majority of posters on eGriz do NOT want to see a move up.
Personally, I'm mixed on the idea. But one thing that gets overlooked is comparing current performance against I-A teams as a measuring stick or as a predictor of success when a team moves to I-A. Remember that
I-AA teams play with 22 fewer scholarships. Having those in your pocket can even things out a great deal.
Now, do I believe Montana could have success at that level? Yes, but only if adequate dollars could be committed to it, and I think that will always be the problem. My concern, however, is that the NCAA is bleeding I-AA football, and soon there will come a day of reckoning: either it will be I-A or it will be DII. If those are the choices, than I would wholeheartedly support a move up.

Wrong I was about Boise going up before Idaho. Sometimes this thing between my ears goes on the blink. Acutally this makes a great case study...or is Boise State just lucky? Maybe the Idaho Vandals were the quintessential 1AA program and didn't know it. Or maybe Dennis Erickson will fix everything......
