Delaware and Georgia Southern would be my guess. Though some of the SWAC teams that may also if they get to count the Classics in their home attendance figures.
They really average over 22 thousand a game? Maybe Delaware...but who would go to a georgia southern game when you can go to a Geogria game? hmmm...

ummmmmmmmm??? georgia southern fans?

Yale, Southern, Montana and Delaware are usually on top as far as attendance. Montana does not have the largest stadium in I-AA. There are schools with stadiums that hold 60,000+.
Which ones?
Swilly, here are all of the stadiums in I-AA which have a higher capacity than Washington-Grizzly. Also listed are their average attendances, and attendance rank. As you can tell, most of these schools are either Ivy League or HBCUs.

Yale University
64,269 (21,667) (3rd)

Jackson State
62,000 (14,597) (10th)

University of Pennsylvania
53,000 (10,142) (31st)

Harvard University
37,289 (12,169) (19th)

Texas Southern
33.333 (10,233) (29th)

Princeton University
30,000 (9370) (34th)

Norfolk State
30,000 (12,009) (20th)

Cornell University
27,000 (7669) (50th)

Florida A&M
25,500 (15,177) (7th)

Southern University
24,000 (19,888) (4th)

College of the Holy Cross
23,500 (7051) (57th)

Portland State University
23,150 (6597) (62nd)

University of Montana
23,117 (22,479) (1st)

Thanks GB, I didnt know that PSU had a bigger stadium than us! Is it because they play in a stadium that other people play in to?

It is a multi-use stadium in Portland called PGE Park. The Vikes play there, along with the Portland Beavers (AAA Padres affiliate), and the Portland Timbers (soccer team).

Thought that other teams would play there because there is no way PSU would get that many people to a game every week

If MSU or UM didn't play in Portland each year they would be lucky if the could fill up that stadium with their entire draw for the year!!

As someone who goes to both the MSU and UM games in PGE, I can attest to this statement.

Either of these are now the game of the year for the Viks (no typo, it isn't Vikes here).

It's the HBCUs that usually have greater attendance that Montana. But those numbers are out of whack because they typically have one or two games (Southern v. Grambling for example) where they draw 70,000. UD and GSU always have high attendance figures, but they don't compete with UMs.

They didn't include those Classics into the final attendance figures, only counting games actually played at the home stadiums of the team. I could be mistaken, but Im pretty sure thats what happened.

Wow, kind of elitist aren't you? I'll admit to being wrong on GSU as I thought they drew higher than they do, but UD is always right there with UM:

2005 NCAA DIVISION I-AA FOOTBALL ATTENDANCE TEAM LEADERS
Rank School G Attendance Average
1. Montana 7 157,355 22,479
2. Delaware 6 133,060 22,177

I think one reason that GSU's attendance was down in this figure is because home playoff games are taken into account. I don't think GSU ever draws very well for their first round game. I know UM drew around 15,000 once, and that was a good showing. If they only took regular season figures, I think everyone would be a little higher.

I completely agree with that. GSU draws well for the I-AA ranks, it's just that I had thought that they drew comparable to UD, UM, etc. when in fact looking at the last several years attendance numbers they are considerably below that.

I thought they did as well. I wasn't surprised to see UD that high, but like yourself, I was surprised not to see GSU in the top 10.

UD season ticket prices are a lot lower, for the record.

Also remember that UD didn't play a playoff game this year. Take away the Thanksgiving week's game from Montana, and their total would be over 23,000 per game. So no, I don't think my statement was elitist at all. Typically GSU and UD are both at least 1k lower than Montana.
