Re: why not ndsu?
A little confused, when you say Minnesota, the big-10 Minnesota school I thought was in the twin cities and it doesn't look like NDSU played them? Minnesota does not list that they played NDSU.hokeyfine wrote:just a quick fyi.....ndsu's non-con b-ball schedule includes........minnesota,wisconsin,kansas st.,colorado state, eastern michigan, manhattan, denver, missouri-kc. wouldn't that be nice to have to boost the big sky's sos?
The Minnesota Schools that NDSU played were Minnesota State-Moorhead, Southwest Minnesota State, Minnesota State-Mankato, Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota-Crookston. These five Minnesota schools do not do much for SOS. Neither does Missouri-KC, Denver, Eastern Michigan.
Also, the Wisconson game was actually Wisconsin-Green Bay, not the big ten school again.
Actually Kansas is the only one and that was the first game of the year (or scheduled as an easy tune-up for Kansas). Colorado State was not even on their schedule last year.
The remaining teams that they played on their schedule are Div II types with Upper Iowa, Mayville State, Si Tanka-Huron, Northern State, Central State, Rider, Jamestown, and so on.
The basketball schedule wasn't real strong it seems, or was I looking in the wrong place. This would actually lower the SOS for the Big Sky. Any games against Big Sky teams (added to the NDSU schedule) would actually significantly increase NDSU's SOS.
MSU on the other hand played Washington State, San Jose State, SMU, Wyoming, Colorado State, and Nebraska. That is 6 fairly large schools.

The reason NDSU had such a poor basketball schedule last year was the fact that the Bison counted as a DII team to DI teams. A few DI's played anyway such as Kansas State, Denver, Missouri-Kansas City, and Manhattan (NY) but this year will see a much greater DI schedule and only three non-DIs.
Do you guys know who is in the Montana State tourney besides the obvious of MSU and now NDSU?

Good article about the Cats Mens BBall schedule next year.
The other 2 teams are Northern Illinois and San Jose State.
Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Here is what the Big Sky could possibly look like in 2008 (from a source in a Big Sky athletic department):
North (travel partners)
Montana - Montana St
N. Colo - SDSU
North Dakota - NDSU
South (travel partners)
Weber St - Idaho St
E. Wash - Portland St
Sac St - N Ariz
In football, eight game schedule, play all teams within division, three teams outside division. Each team would also be matched up with a “traditional” rival annually in the other division.
“Traditional Rivals”
Montana St - Idaho State
Montana - E Washington
Weber St - N Colorado
Portland St - North Dakota
Sac St - NDSU
N Ariz - SDSU
Basketball would play at least 16 conference games (10 in division, 6 outside division), and have a men’s tournament in a location like Denver or Ogden/Salt Lake. The women’s tournament would be on-campus.
Adding UNC is the likely first step in making this happen. If Sac St leaves, another school like S Utah, South Dakota, or W. Washington could be added, later. Of course, a lot can change in three years.
UND has just hired a new AD and is likely to begin fundraising for a new indoor practice football practice facility and for a major athletic scholarship endowment fund. With a 13,500 indoor football stadium, a 4000 seat basketball “practice” center, and a 12,000 seat hockey/basketball arena, few schools will be as well prepared to a move up to DI.

Perhaps that is poor wording choice, but it is not meant to imply "main" rival. Since under the above scenario, MSU and Montana would be in the same division, there would still play each other once / year in football and twice annually in other sports. But MSU would not have a guaranteed football game against a team in the other division unless it was designated a "traditional rival".94VegasCat wrote:Can you explain what you mean by "Traditional Rivals".
I am pretty sure that you have no idea of the rivalry between Montana State and montana.
When the SEC was split into two divisions, certain teams were guaranteed that they would meet each other annually, even if there were in different divions: Alabama- Tennessee, Auburn-Georgia, LSU-Florida etc. In each of these cases, the major rivalries are still within the division (Alabama-Auburn, Georgia-Florida). Since Pocatello would be the closest non-division city, ISU would likely be designated MSU's natural "traditional rival" outside your division.

Always nice to hear from a D-II fan whose school keeps saying that it is happy to be in D-II and has no plans of moving up. Join the debate after your school has pulled the trigger and starts the process to become a D-I school. Frost will sellout when UW-Milwaukee comes to Brookings next season. Frost will have tons of D-I sellouts in the future. Do you think USD will EVER sellout one of it's games? Me neiter. SDSU sells out Frost because people want to see the Jacks. The largest crowd in Frost Arena history and the largest crowd in Frost Arena playoff histroy have nothing to do with our D-II little brothers from Vermillion.UNDSioux wrote:89rabbit:
Interesting that the image you posted was of the formerly traditional sell-out game between SDSU and the USD Coyotes. Don't think Frost saw that one-game attendance for the entire year, did it?

Is this picture more to your liking?
P.S. To answer your question, although attendence was down last year (horrible home schedule due to D-I transitional status, this year's is much better), yes we did have more fans go through the turnstiles for the season then we did for the single SDSU vs USD game in the picture.
