Carroll AD among those in running for Montana job
By FRITZ NEIGHBOR - The Missoulian - 05/25/05
Carroll College athletic director Bruce Parker is among a pool of candidates for the athletic director job at the University of Montana.
Parker, who spent 24 years at Montana State before moving to Carroll College in 2003, also confirmed Tuesday that he is in the final nine candidates for the position. Parker was the Frontier Conference athletic director of the year in 2004.
Wednesday is cut-down day in the search for the University of Montana's next athletic director, and the 15-member selection committee could have a list of five or so finalists by the afternoon.
Bill Johnston, alumni director and lobbyist for UM and co-chair of the committee, said after Tuesday's meeting school President George Dennison will be presented with a list of finalists.
‘‘We do hope to get to five,'' Johnston said. ‘‘It could be two more, or one less. It just depends on how the committee meeting goes.''
Beyond Dennison approving the list, there is more work to be done. Johnston said the committee will review its equal employment opportunity process, then make contact with its final choices, to ensure their interest in coming in for interviews. That may take another day or two.
‘‘And at that point, the list is public,'' Johnston said. ‘‘We have to get President Dennison's review. We're anticipating we'll get that (Wednesday), but we're not sure.''
At last count 57 candidates had applied for the job being vacated by the retiring Don Read, effective July 1. The list was shortened to nine semifinalists last week, according to sources. None of those names have been released through UM.
‘‘Some people have asked to be kept confidential until they're a finalist,'' Johnston said. ‘‘It will be released publicly as soon as we have ascertained their interest in coming to campus.''
Sources outside the search committee said that University of Oregon associate athletic director Mike Marlow and UM director of development Jim O'Day are among the semifinalists. Marlow confirmed Tuesday that he among those nine.
Bruce Parker, who spent 24 years at Montana State before moving to Carroll College in 2003, also confirmed Tuesday that he is in the final nine. Parker was the Frontier Conference athletic director of the year in 2004.

Does this surprise anyone? The thought of Buce in a griz sweatshirt makes me want to vomit.

I spoke to Bruce at the beginning of the month and he said at the time he was really torn. He said that he really loves Carroll and he was a Bobcat for a longtime, but really it was a no brainer as far as a career move goes trying to get the Griz Ad job. I really like Bruce, and he would do a great job. Apparently others feel that way, because he told me the he was nominated before he showed any interest for the position. It is always tough to see Bobcats and former Bobcats go to the dark side, but it would be a big promotion from his current position.

I know that Bruce certainly has aspirations to get into a D1 AD position. He has told me that he would love to get back to MSU as our AD. But the griz position is open and I can't fault him for exploring the possibility. I do not know what the Carroll AD job pays, but obviously it would be a huge step up for Bruce.
I certainly have mixed emotions. I like Bruce a lot and would love it if he had the opportunity to move up like this in his career. However, seeing him in griz colors would certainly be hard! In addition, I would only wish it on my worst enemy to have to work with Bobby Hack

I asked Bruce about Bobby, and he said that he like the guy… I guess he can look pass all the asinine comments and see the coach underneath it all. Or he knew he was going after the job, and is already playing the diplomat role (that’s probably it).WYCAT wrote:Maybe that is the key. The whole thing is a front. if he gets the job i hope to hell he waits until next year to fire baby hack........if he gets fired now he gets fired as the coach that brought the griz to the national championship game. If he gets fired after...say....a 7-5 or even a 8-4 season he will have to coach at a different (lower) level to get a head jobmquast53000 wrote:I asked Bruce about Bobby, and he said that he like the guy… I guess he can look pass all the asinine comments and see the coach underneath it all. Spurrier is going to do exactly what Lou did at South Carolina, get beat, and get beat alot!
