Rumors about Hauck to SDSU

Post by cornbreadfred » Mon Nov 28, 2005 1:27 pm

The rumors are spreading about Hauck to SDSU and from more reliable sources close to Griz camp. Apparently they really like his resume of recruiting and his West Coast ties-->UW

I certainly hope they reconsider....I really enjoy beating the griz partly due to his superb game planning

Bobby Hauck and crew definetely are poor game planners, especially against Cal Poly this last weekend. They used the exact same defense from previous this year, and were amazed that Cal Poly made adjustments, which in turn led to no adjustments made by Hauck and Comp. They expect to win on effort from players, and the mass substitutions on defense killed them all year.

This rumor does not make sense to me. Hauck has not established himself at the 1-AA level yet and he only has three years of head coaching experience (at any level). SDSU is a pretty big jump for that background. When Glenn went to Wyoming he had years of success at the D-II level and then followed that up with two NC apperances in two years.

As much as I would hate for him to leave the Big Sky. I do like Wyoming so it would be nice to watch my other team beat up on Bobby for a while :)

If you mean San Diego State University.

Their current coach (Craft) has not yet been fired. They still have a game against Hawaii left this weekend.

Also, SDSU has won their last several games (against Colorado State, Wyoming and they beat Utah) so it's made it a more difficult decision to fire Craft. They could end up 6-6.

However, their current coach came from some junior college in California, so it's not out of the question to grab someone like Bobby instead of taking a failing coach from a higher level. Bobby has to be attractive (young like the Meyer of Florida with a fast track record) going to the championship game last year and doing very well this year without a solid QB and winning some games that they shouldn't have (due to weaker players). Amazing to say, but MSU and Cal Poly both had better teams/players this year (I can hear people saying no way, but true). A coach can only do so much.

Bobby is looked at as a very charismatic man, and he is cut from that Urban Meyer mold as was said before, young, charismatic and can go into a recruits home and really amaze the parents. Plus with his experience at UW(which isn't necassarily good) is also a big plus on his resume. I'm not saying it's a smart move by SDSU, but it is one that they are none the less strongly considering, I'm told.

Assuming it is true (for the moment); would you want to make the change ASAP for recruiting purposes? Do you think UM has another coach in mind just in case (so they can move fast)?

My fear is that as soon as Carroll is done with the playoffs this year that their coach will be head to UM. That would be bad for us and VERY GOOD for them.

I have been told the Carroll coach (Van Vliet ?) has some very bad blood with/at UM. He refused to even be considered a few years back. Now it has been quite a few administrations and Boosters back since he was fired at UM (with Donavan) so I wonder how long the bad blood can/will last.

Actually the story that I have heard many times is that Van Diest asked Hogan to wait until Carroll season was over & he would consider it. But Hogan was unwilling to wait & went after Hauck. Maybe there is bad blood from that, but Hogan is gone now.

Sounds resonable to me Andaconda, but I believe the bad blood was not with Hogan but went back further. That is why I have always wondered why some say's it still exists.

Well, regardless if there is any validity to any of these Hauck rumors, it has to be awful for their recruiting efforts. Uncertainty in the coaching ranks is never a good thing for a team trying to get kids to devote the best years of their life (so the saying goes) to a college program.

I agree with you BAC, on that one, but the best thing about this rumor is that it was started by, and continues to be prolieraated by the Griz own fans on there own board     \:D/ \:D/

This Hauck rumor might not be such a bad thing. If recruits want to play Division I ball in Montana and they see instability at UM, they just might choose MSU. That would mean Hauck would lose his last recruiting class and lose one more time to the Cats.

I believe Van Diest would own Montana recruiting if he was at the D-IAA level. I hope he never ends up in Missoula. Plus it would be hard to dislike a guy like that even if he is a griz.

Van Diest was let go from UM with the ouster of Donovan (same with Joe Glenn). I suspect any bad blood has been dissipated the last few years as Griz have shown a lot of support for the Saints in their playoff runs. A lot of Griz players came to watch the Saints' 2003 semi-final game in Helena the week after the Griz lost; lots of Griz fans took the trip to Savannah the day after last year's National Championship to see the Saints win their third NC, with Monte suited up in Carroll purple and gold. I doubt Hauck is leaving, and hope he doesn't, having taken Montana to 3 playoffs and one title game. But if he moves up, Van Diest would be a natural fit.

My understanding is that if Hauck goes to SDSU it would be as an assisstant to Neuhiesel who is supposed to take the job there.

As for Van Diest, my understanding was that he wanted to stay in Helena until his son graduated. I have also heard the other rumors posted so who knows what's true, but I have a hard time beleiving the bad blood with UM thing, as Glenn's son played for him and a couple of Griz players dropped down to play for him.

The devil made me do it the first time... the second time I done it on my own.
