Idaho's Holt Bolts

From the Idaho Statesman:

University of Idaho head football coach Nick Holt said Sunday he is leaving the Vandals to join the staff of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams.

Holt, who just finished his second year with the Vandals, will join ex-Vandal Scott Linehan’s staff as a defensive line coach.

“I feel good about it,” said Holt, who plans to meet with Idaho players today. “It’s bittersweet, to leave this place, especially when I know it’s headed in the right direction. I know we can be good now.”

The Vandals were 5-18 under Holt, including 2-9 this season.

“We’re disappointed we’re losing Nick,” Idaho athletic director Rob Spear said. “But we’re Vandals, so we’re excited about a Vandal getting an opportunity at the next level.”

Spear, who said he had been working on a new contract for Holt, said he hopes to hire Holt’s replacement within “five to 10 days.” Spear refused to say whether he is considering anyone on the current staff.

Holt, 42, has no NFL playing or coaching experience. He is close friends with Linehan, a former Idaho player and assistant coach who was named the Rams’ coach in January.

Holt said he rejected Linehan’s first job offer “about two weeks ago,” but changed his mind over the weekend.

“It’s an opportunity I just couldn’t turn down,” Holt said.

Yeah Kramer has ties there. I believe Kramer has turned the job down before. Idaho is one of those places that are coaching suicide. You don't go to Idaho unless you don't want to have a job in 3 years. Going to Idaho, Middle Tennessee or Utah State is a very risky move... Kramer would be better off waiting for something else to come along.

Are they still playing in the Sun Belt, or did they move into the WAC?

U of I overall is under fire for a number of reasons, I believe.

Pull the trigger already, kill this D-1A experiment. You are not Boise State!!! You do not have the resources, or fan base. It is time to swollow your pride and come back to D-1AA.

Well, if anyone can turn them around Dennis can! That would be cool if he can make them competitive.

I would have to disagree. Right now Idaho is the 4th fastest growing state in the U.S. They have had a 30% increase in 20 years! With joining the WAC (a much better fit then the Sun Belt) you will see an increase in interest form both fans and recruits.

Holt out; Erickson in at UI?

10:46 PM MST on Sunday, February 5, 2006
KTVB.COM

NewsChannel 7 has confirmed that University of Idaho head football coach Nick Holt will take an assistant coaching job with the St. Louis Rams.

An official press conference is set for Monday at 4pm Mountain Time.

“We’re disappointed Nick is leaving, but we are Vandals, and we support Vandals,” athletic director Rob Spear told sports director David Augusto. “We wish him the best, and we’re moving forward.”

Holt will work under former Vandal quarterback and new St. Louis head man Scott Linehan.

Sources within the UI Vandal organization tell NewsChannel 7 that former University of Idaho and Seattle Seahawks head coach Dennis Erickson is a candidate for the top football job at the school.

Spear refused to comment on those reports.

Erickson started his head coaching career with UI in 1982, before leaving for Wyoming for a single year in 1986. He's bounced back and forth between the pro and college ranks - with stints at WSU, University of Miami, the Seattle Seahawks, Oregon State, and most recently at the head of the San Francisco 49ers.

He has been out of football for one season after being fired by the Niners after the 2004 season.

Nick Holt led the Vandals for two seasons - with an overall record of five wins and 18 losses, with a 2-9 record this season.

But the college is in Moscow!!!!
Short or getting Erickson it will be a very very long before they have a compeditive D-1A football team if EVER.

I take it all back if they land Erickson, again.

I really think the key is if they can get Erickson. If they get Erickson I could see the team vastly improving in a very short time. If they don't get Erickson I see the team’s woes continuing. The University of Idaho is a tough place to coach, but the state as a whole has great potential for college sports.

Do you really think Erickson is interested? I mean, what will Idaho pay vs. what is his last compesation package? Doesn't San Fransisco still have to pay him like a $2.5 million payout unless he gets a new job? I'm not sure if money is a problem for Erickson, but I doubt that Idaho will pay that much...

Additionally, didn't he talk to Ole Miss last year? I bet he waits it out for another year, gets his settlement, then takes a big time SEC or PAC 10 job. (you see my regional biases there).

But if I'm wrong, go Vandals!! He'd be a big boost in getting their program to turn the corner.

Name the last I-AA coach to move into the I-A ranks....

Joe Glen, U of M to Wyoming in 2002. Krames should jump when he gets a chance.

In the last 8 years, Glenn is the only coach from 1AA to 1A. Sounds like Kramer is very happy at MSU and plans on staying for several more years, providing the Bobcat Gods continue to give him the nod.
