NIL Changes for 2025-26

Post by mchammer » Sat Jul 27, 2024 9:09 am

I'm reading about NCAA plans to share revenue that include scholarship increases to all sports, and roster size limits to match scholarship numbers. As I understand it, football can increase to 105 scholarships with a 105 roster limit. Track can increase to 45, with a 45 roster limit. MSU currently has 30.6 scholarships for men and women in track, and about 90 on the rosters combined. Any thoughts on what this might mean for MSU Athletics next year? I want to understand this better. It sounds like a bad situation for MSU.

Yes, the roster limits have increased(haven't read anything about FCS football), but all sports are now considered “equivalency sports.” Basically they switched from scholarship limits to roster limits and schools can fund those rosters however they chose.

FCS schools will be contributing to the settlement over 10 years. This will impose a financial burden, so athletic departments will look for reductions in spending. Reducing roster size can help with that. If FCS schools increase scholarships for football then they will have to do so for women's sports, or eliminate a sport for men. We may see a legal challenge to Title 9. So much potential for change, inequity and loss.
