Tommy's Position at the Next Level
I know we have a game coming up and I know I'm jumping ahead here but we were chatting about this at the tailgates Saturday night. I have no doubt Tommy can make it in the NFL if he so chooses. Not only is he extremely gifted\talented, but he has the work ethic, desire, heart, attitude, like none other. Plus he's competitive as hell... oh ya and he's extremely intelligent. As Vigen says, "Tommy is special."
So, what position will he play? Any reason he can't play Running Back, like a Christian McCaffrey player? Ne may need to add some weight but he's not a small player right now by any means. Maybe a slot receiver?

Re: Tommy's Position at the Next Level
Coach if he wants a football life in the USA that pays. He’s not an NFL QB and it’s so difficult to learn a new position competing against the cream of the crop. Maybe XFL but that league doesn’t pay well at all and you still need a job the rest of the year as you hope to even getting an NFL workout.
Possibly a CFL QB or WR if he wants to try pro football is what I feel is his best avenue.

He's fast. Really fast. That will get him looks.
On that note, did the website that measured Jones' speed in Albuquerque measure Tommy's speed on the first TD? It seriously looked like he was digitally in fast motion.

Re: Tommy's Position at the Next Level
He’s already been looked at and may still be getting looked at. He’s probably been told what his chances are and what he needs to do to enhance them. Scouts are at MSU all the time and also following MSU players at road games. There was a scout in the press box vs Idaho, two at Utah Tech. I talked to one and he said he was looking at Grebe, Wehr, Moore, Mellott, Hall, but also said they are looking for anybody and quite often find players who they end up giving invites to out of nowhere. Rest assured they probably all know who he is.
The NFL is almost all about physical measurements. Both dimensional and agility. His agility (strength, speed, quickness) are all adequate or more than adequate. I’m not sure about dimensional because they measure all kinds of things like the ratio of forearm to upper arm (I’m making that up but it might be true). Anyway, if he has the right dimensions and gets through the season healthy (biggest thing at this point) he’s going to get some kind of offer.
The MSU players unhesitatingly say Mellott when asked who’s the fastest, strongest (pound for pound), best. He’s athletically better than most people realize. Incredibly respected and respectful. He’s serious, serious about what he’s doing. A stereotypical Butte no bull s—t guy. Think Robert DeNiro’s character in American Hustle.

Quite the compliment. Edelman, to me, was scary. Talented and seemed to be tough as nails... Was always making great catches.

You don't think he'd continue to be a long snapper? Seems like jumping from long snapper to Running Back would be a stretch. . . .catatac wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 11:29 amI know we have a game coming up and I know I'm jumping ahead here but we were chatting about this at the tailgates Saturday night. Pretty sure I never posted that. Confusing me with someone else? I was on the Troy Train from his first few games and before the draft posted he’d be 2nd or 3rd round. First thread about him here was one I created. I thought he’d be a RB back in 2017 but I was wrong.seataccat wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 3:27 pmI think I remember you saying that Troy Andersen would be an undrafted free agent.PapaG wrote: ↑Tue Oct 15, 2024 12:26 pmCoach if he wants a football life in the USA that pays. Obviously made this comment as a joke, but I do wonder why he wouldn't get a shot, do you really need to be 6'4" 250 lbs to long snap in the NFL or is being near perfect on snaps enough.coloradocat wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 6:51 pmHave you seen him run down on punts? Re: Tommy's Position at the Next Level
That is a great compliment, and I can see that if he ends up being a receiver. I still like the idea of Tommy at RB. At first I was thinking he might not be big enough, but honestly I think he already is, even if he didn't add another ten pounds. You certainly don't want to sacrifice that speed. Christian McCaffrey is 5' 11", 210.

Re: Tommy's Position at the Next Level
You need to be bigger. NFL snappers are required to block. In college the defense has to wait a full second before making contact with the snapper, which basically relieves him of any blocking duties.4KornerKat wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 9:28 amObviously made this comment as a joke, but I do wonder why he wouldn't get a shot, do you really need to be 6'4" 250 lbs to long snap in the NFL or is being near perfect on snaps enough.coloradocat wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 6:51 pmHave you seen him run down on punts? Some of you fools couldn’t evaluate talent if it was sitting next to you
and some of the NFL teams apparently can’t evaluate talent either based on their record over several years……… He’ll get an opportunity depending on what goes on between January and the pro day, what are his pro day/combine numbers going to look like ![Shocked ](./images/smilies/icon_eek.gif)

Re: Tommy's Position at the Next Level
It isn’t. Unless you take the comparison out of context. The similarities abound. Small town. Small state. State champ in multiple sports (their times in the 100 and 200, of which they were both state champs, were nearly identical). Played college sports at small school. Difference comes with Moss being in close proximity to the major college sports world, which has absolutely nothing to do with what makes them similar. Unless Andersen was on the high school debate team, then there’s another difference. lol.PapaG wrote: ↑Wed Oct 16, 2024 5:32 pm

Andersen’s ability to play multiple positions in excellent fashion set him apart from just about any college player in the past 30 years. Had he played LB full-time at some place similar to Marshall as an FBS school, say Colorado State, he’d be a potential Heisman candidate and first round pick, probably top 10. So he needs a year to acclimate to the NFL and now has that and we’re just beginning to see the potential impact he’s going to have on the league.
Andersen has started about five(?) games and has already won a player of the week award. The only thing stopping Andersen is injury. We’ll just have to keep waiting but it’s gonna happen. I got to talk to an Atlanta scout recently and he said that the entire organization is completely enraptured with Andersen. They think he’s going to be one of the best players in the league by the end of the year and he said he was tempering their words.

Re: Tommy's Position at the Next Level
OK Tom, stick to your guns. I disagreed with the comparison in terms of NFL projections then and still do to this day. As I said then, this isn’t meant as an insult to Troy and I’m guessing he’d laugh about being compared to a Top 5 at his position all-time NFL player going into the 2022 draft.
