Capital is getting back on track it seems, other than a missed FG. Up 21-0 on Billings senior at half.

When's the last time the Hawks haven't had a scoring drive that wasn't stopped by a turnover?

I would think that with the success of this program lately, the coach would be getting looks as a college assistant

Nothing against Purcell, but it helps having a team full of seniors who have been starting for 2-3 years, and when a handful of those seniors are legitimate D-1 prospects.

I tend to think that a well coached team ends up producing more college level players. Good players don't get a chance to shine on teams that always go 3 and out on offense or can't get off the field on defense.

Purcell is an ok coach. The horses Bozo Hi trots out onto the field is what has made them so successful. With the talent they have, if they lose ANY games this year the coach should be fired. I say that in jest, but it is true.
p.s. i think that allcat might be purcell fishing for a job!

That is why I think you have to give credit to the coach, I'm fishing for a coaching gig, instead of an office job. I really only need help with a couple of things, reading film, blocking technique and designing plays. I already know how to yell at the refs, so I got that going for me.

Even great talent needs good coaching. For example, you could have 2 future NFL players and pretty good overall talent on your team, yet only win 2 games in 2 seasons.

Deep Talent like what Bozo Hi has only needs "a" coach. I am an idiot, and I could coach this team to a 10-0 run.
If you take Weyer, Dissly, Collins & Gappmeyer off of this team... they are 5-5... maybe 6-4. You don't have to look any further back than last year to prove it.

calling him an "ok" coach seems a little unfair in my opinion. didn't he have a hell of a career in havre before coming to Bozeman too? I thought he had a few titles under his belt there too but we'll have to wait for confirmation on that. but he has done wonders to the Bozeman hawk program from the second he came to town. and if we're giving credit to the players for all the success this year I think you need to see how he starts molding these kids from the time they are in middle school to WANT to be hawks and want to be the best. he won a title a few years ago and lost another in a heart breaker last year. this year he'll go undefeated and win another.
I just think his resume is far too good to be considered just ok but i'll dig a little deeper and see if i'm just misremembering....

This news article should shed a little light on his coaching history at Havre.
http://www.bozemandailychronicle.com/sp ... 4e028.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It would be a real disservice to say that anybody could coach the Hawks to a state title this year. Coach Purcell is much better than that, certainly above average. The teams talent is certainly above average also, some of that is God given and some is coached through multiple years.
edited to say maybe that is why they beat the snot out of capital a couple weeks ago.

If you're looking for someone with a little authority, I'm your man. I have as little as anyone!

ya if i'm not mistaken I think he lost one championship game at havre and then won the next. then he came to Bozeman and really has done a great job with the entire program. and i'm not just talking about wins on Friday nights. his players do the right things. they volunteer in schools and do other community service. he get's kids excited about hawk football when they are about 8 years old. he's very involved in the middle school teams and by the time these kids are freshman they are ready to go. and his record is pretty damn good too. my guess is after this year he'll have 3 state championship appearances in the last 4 years with likely 2 state titles. seems good.

You can be a good coach and have good players at the same time ya know.
Is he bolstered by having the calibre of athletes that he has on his team? Absolutely.
Is he still a good to very good coach? Absolutely. His track record proves that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Bozeman had one state title from 1900 to 2009. That one came around 1910. They were runner up three times in 76, 95 and 97. So one title and three runner ups in 110 years.
Under Purcell they won it in 2010, were runner up in 2012 and appear to be on the verge of winning it again in 2013. This current team, if it keeps up at its present pace, will go down as one of the best at least in AA history and probably in all class history in Montana.
Someone mentioned his success in Havre. I think he was also in Eureka or some other town in NW Montana. Going off memory again, but I recall one of his teams being the first to make the playoffs or win the conference in a long, long time.
Above all else, he's a really good guy.
He's also a Carroll grad and they've put a number of good coaches out there, besides Paul and Bobby Petrino. Tom McMahon is an assistant coach in the NFL, Chris Cinkovich is a longtime FBS assistant, Chance Ferlicka has been the defensive coordinator at Capital for about 25 years, Monte Thelen has been head coach for about 10 years at a highly successful prep team (Cherokee Trail) in the Denver area, which played for the Colorada 5A title last year, Kevin Peoples is at UAB. There are quite a few others...
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

The Bozeman High football program was one of the worst in the state before he got there. They hadn't won a title in something like 90 years, until 2010?. They were a few seconds away from a 2nd one last year, and they're the huge favorite this year.
He deserves all the credit for the turnaround.
