The league said Marcano bet more than $150,000 on baseball, with $87,319 of that on MLB-related wagers. Most of his MLB bets were parlays, and he won only 4.3% of them.
Imagine being banned for life after only winning 4.3% of your bets.
These stories are going to keep popping up. Not surprising that there are some guys that don't have self control enough to at the very least not bet on their own sport. The leagues are getting what they deserve by making huge deals with betting sites.

For parlay bets, a 4% win rate can still be profitable depending on how many individual bets were being made as part of each parlay. Either way it's an incredibly dumb decision for the player to do this, but you're exactly right that the leagues are setting themselves up more and more for this to happen as sports betting becomes increasingly enmeshed within the sports themselves and how fans experience them.

I tend to disagree that the leagues are setting themselves up for any greater issues here. This may be new here but it isn't other places. Betting is incredibly popular in the UK and many premier league squads have betting companies as their primary sponsors, even as jersey sponsors. If guys that are making millions to play a game can't control themselves enough to not bet, the fact that the league or their team are sponsored or promoting sports betting wasn't what pushed them over the edge.

That's a good point. It's the rise in popularity of sports betting in general that's correlated to increased player betting scandals as opposed to the leagues and teams themselves promoting it. From my perspective as a fan who doesn't bet on sports, it's still pretty jarring to be watching an NBA game and see Charles Barkley pop up mid-game telling me which results he thinks I should bet on.
