Hope your not a Redskins fan

Post by gtapp » Mon Mar 12, 2012 2:12 pm

The league just penalized the Redskins for cap violations in 2010. The penalty is $36 million of lost cap space over two seasons (2012 and 2013) This years cap is $120M so that is almost 1/6 of their total cap allotment. This is really going to hurt. The Cowboys lost $10M over two seasons.

I have Redskins fans in the family, and this bogus cap thing is only a distant 3rd in terms of news that makes them wish they weren't Redskins fans. Paying Pierre Garcon like a pro-bowler and that moronic trade they made with the Rams are both a lot worse than this. This only hurts their ability to compete in years they weren't going to be competitive anyway.

There's no reason the NFL should be able to do this. Using a roster bonus like a signing bonus isn't against any sort of rule. It isn't even new. The Vikings did it when they signed Antoine Winfield to a contract a few years back.

Now, speaking of news that makes me hope you're not a Redskins fan...

Basically, according to Mike Holmgren, Jeff Fisher was doing his friend Mike Shanahan a favor by taking his trade offer over an equal offer from the Browns. If it's true, with friends like that, Mike Shanahan doesn't need enemies. If Jeff Fisher really wanted to do Shanahan a favor, he would have taken Holmgren's picks and told Shanahan not to be a moron, giving up 3 firsts and a second for one player.

As a Rams fan, I resemble that remark. Seriously, unless RG3 turns out to be "the next big thing" at QB, and is 1st team All-Pro for the next 10 years, I think that was a great deal for the Rams. They'll sill get a great player at #6, and with the extra picks they'll have over the next three years, they could lay a solid foundation for their franchise for the next 10 years, if they draft wisely.
