Interesting, the current TV contracts with CBS, Fox, NBC, etc. aren't expiring any time soon so this wouldn't make ESPN the one and only network showing NFL broadcasts. Perhaps they want a similar model to what they're doing with the NHL on ESPN+, which is actually very nice - pretty much every NHL broadcast for the relatively low monthly cost of ESPN+ membership. Of course, if the NHL and Big Sky Conference is ESPN+ then I'm sure the NFL would be more like ESPN++++++++++++++ in terms of the price they'd charge customers to subscribe.
