Bozeman or Portland
God I love posting this time of night! Nobody to "attempt" to argue with my one-dimensional, narrow-minded point of view
W.C. made some pointless reference to Philly; mine happens to be that I feel Bozo has much more to offer than a fog laden dirty river town. I guess the only advantage Portland has over Bozo is that in order to truly enjoy yourself, you have to leave town!

Both are great places. Bozeman is a nice small town with great outdoor activities. Portland has it beat in terms of job market (you can actually get one here) and the infrastructure. Much more to do and see on a given Saturday night.
Portland has beautiful parks and you can be skiing or on the coast within a couple of hours. It rains a good bit and the winters can be dreary but I will take the summers and falls over virtually anywhere.
Bozeman is a wonderful town and I would love to live there any time it is above 15 degrees but the winters are brutal.

Unfortunately, that probably means more smoky and hazy days this summer and fall with forest fires. We need more snowy and cold weather for you guys now so everything will be nicer for me when I come up later!suckitgriz wrote:Well I have gone golfing 4 times in the last week and it is currently 58 degrees. Plus, Bozeman has over 315 sunny days per year- true stat- more clear days then Houston, TX.

We're all bracing for a huge fire season; what I recall about this type of winter (don't ya'll hate when older folks say something like that?) was that we usually had a pretty wet April through June
Any of the posters in here old enough to remember the summer of 69 (the last time MSU beat the Fizzlies three times in one year, by the way) when it poured all of May and June? The drive-in on the edge of Bozo was a cold place to be in vehicles without good heaters

My wife and I (both MSU alums) moved to Portland in 1997. The first winter was tough. The rain wasn't bad, but the fact that you rarely saw the sun for a few months was fairly depressing. Bozeman may be cold, but you can see the sky.
That, however, is the only negative I can say about living in Portland. The wages are much higher than Bozeman, yet the pricing of houses is roughly the same. We just moved into a 4-bedroom, 3-bath house in Tualatin, which is 10 miles south of Portland. We paid under $300k for the house and I get downtown to work in 20 minutes. Not bad.
Another benefit IMO is the outdoors here. Yes, I realize Bozeman is an outdoor paradise, but I ask you this. Have you ever skied on a Saturday, spent a 70 degree day at the Pacific Ocean on a Sunday, and wakeboarded in 70+ degrees on a Monday on a river? I did a few years ago over Memorial Day weekend.
I'd pick Portland again if I had to do it over. Our plan now is to make money here (or somewhere else in the West if one of us gets an offer we can't refuse) for the next 18 years, get our girls through school, then sell our home for a nice profit and move back to Montana to retire.

As a Griz fan, I can say that I'd live in Bozeman in a heartbeat. Pretty town, and access to good fishing.
During football season, I'd probably have to come up with some excuse as to why I 'm not available, but a few small lies are a small price to pay for being able to live in Montana.
