Bobcats reign as top Student/Athletes in the Sky...

Post by El_Gato » Fri Jul 01, 2005 3:42 pm

Congrats to MSU for taking home the Big Sky Conference's President's Cup. Great job Bobcats!! The bottom line is that not only are our kids competing very favorably in our conference, they're also getting a solid start for the rest of their lives and I'm pretty sure that's the BIGGEST reason we give them scholarships.

I can't wait until the griz band-wagoners start pooh-poohing this award. It's amazing that folks like grizlaw put no weight on something as significant as this award (he's clearly stated that football and maybe basketball are the only meaningful sports we compete in) yet other griz think Monte winning some rigged contest is something worth bragging about!

Do you think if dUMb ever won this award (yeah, right), they'd make mention of it? Hmmm, let's think about that a moment, shall we?

Congratulations to the student athletes at MSU. Gato, why did you put this in the Smack Talk forum? Are you pessimistic?

Yes, he is...

This is a great award to win. Wish the Griz had won it...It is a nice statement award to show the balance between academics and sports.

Meat,

I put it here because I knew it would draw some smack responses from bearbac, scat, and a few others and I didn't want to "poison" the other thread.

I guess I'm simply pointing out the hypocrisy BOTH sides show when it comes to defending their Alma Mater. We ALL take pride when representatives of our institutions do well, sometimes to the point of absurdity (ie stuffing the ballot box for a mascot), and most of us love to point out any instance of "our" school beating "your" school.

To me, this is the kind of stuff that exists in a TRUE rivalry and personally, I've always loved the one that exists between our 2 schools.

And bearbac, no, I wouldn't trade the President's Cup for post-season play in the 3 sports you mentioned. I'm proud that our kids have their priorities straight and are maximizing the opportunity that's been offered to them. I'm hopeful that the Cats will defend the Cup next season AND add post-season play in at least 1 of the 3 you mentioned. Even if we don't, however, winning the Cup would be another successful season for MSU, in my book.

Think about this, bearassed; despite winning the football & women's bball title and the Big Sky Tourney in men's bball, your kids STILL couldn't crack the top 3 in the cup. Just goes to show how far down the list they rank in other sports & academically...

The bottom line here is that we offer these kids a chance to compete AND get an education. In that regard, MSU's student/athletes are CLEARLY performing better overall than those at dUMb.

Hopefully for griz fans, their new AD will realize that he's running an ATHLETIC department, and not just a college football team, ala Hogan...

Wait a second here. You got the civil responses everyone deserved and it was a great success for MSU to win the Presidents Cup. I think had the situation been reversed -- Cat fans would be bragging about how they got the top three teams to the post season, I know all of you will come on here and tell me that's not true because it says more as an institution to win the Presidents Cup, but I will refuse to believe that you wouldn't.

There are plenty of other civilized Griz postes than bearbac on this board and all boards. You seem to just be picking him out in a sea of positive posts to somehow portray him and posters like him as representatives of Griz Nation -- of course its convenient for you all to do in the smack boards.

I think the Griz do a great job in keeping their athletes academically refined. Perhaps they are not at the top of the list in that regard but they are certainly nowhere near the bottom. I was under the impression that the University of Montana was a finalist for the Presidents Cup earlier this year? Wouldn't that qualify as cracking the top three?

I'm not sure where the statement comes from that Wayne Hogan was only interested in the football team. The Adams Center proves that theory wrong as well as the refurbished South Campus Soccer Stadium --- four sports that have all won more than three Big Sky titles in the last ten years (football, soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball). Of course Wayne wasn't the best when it came to writing the checks -- but refresh your stats, UM isn't the only school in the state with an athletics defecit.

By the way -- stuffing a ballot box means one person voting more than once. It was impossible to vote more than once in that poll so you can quit whining about it once and for all and finally lay that to rest. Besides, Monte didn't win on popular vote but through a panel of judges who studied his gameday participation, skills, and community service.

Be happy to have what you have and stop trying to nitpick at every little thing in Griz Country. That is why people have coined the term "Griz Envy" because that's all that seems to go on here -- there is almost more talk over the Griz whether good or bad than about your own team.

So once again, congratulations to Montana State University on winning the Presidents Cup. It is a remarkable feat and great for not only the university but the State of Montana.

Now sit back, relax, drink a kool-aid, and look forward to next season.

Clarifications on Nick's post:

* Algebra 101: Apparently a "sea of positive posts" equals 3.

* dUMb did NOT finish in the top 3, per the Big Sky website, despite being a "finalist" as you called them, whatever that means.

* If you peruse egriz, you'll find a thread that SPECIFICALLY explained how to vote for Monte mulitiple times on the same day. You'll also find in that thread a number of people bragging about how many times they followed the steps and "stuffed the ballot box". Based on your own definition, Nick, those folks did, in fact, stuff the box.
