State?

Why should Bobcat fans and alum be offended when individuals from U refer to Montana State University as State? Did I miss something or some reason that this is an insult.

I started this in smack because I know it won't take long for the smack to start flying.

It sounds stupid. Like calling San Francisco "San Fran"

It goes back to Booby's early years when he wouldn't call MSU anything else but 'state'.

Seriously people. There is no large, nefarious west side of the state plan to ALWAYS undermine MSU. Sometimes it's just flat-out easier to say "State" than "Montana State University".

Since it's such a challenge for you mentally impaired folks, why not just try Cats or MSU?

I don't have any problem saying dUMb or (f/g)izz. :)

I cannot print the term I personally use. But that's just me.

My two cents: if you're ashamed to be a graduate of a "state" university, perhaps you should have attended UM. I see nothing wrong with calling it "state" although I personally don't do it.

I wondered if it was because of baby hack, and I guess that is the case. I personally see nothing wrong with the term, MSU is a land grant university and like nearly all Land Grants, we have the State designation. As a land grant MSU was charged with providing a professionally viable education and service to its constituents, basically something that was useful and something the university and its graduates could and should be proud of. Therefore I think we should embrace the "State" title, then baby hack would sound stupid (even more so I guess) when he tries to use it as a put down.

I kind of like the word State. It's funny to me, like those generic shirts that say Tech. Or Bluto's College sweatshirt. No biggie.

I figure if I'm going to get offended by somebody saying State, then I should probably also get offended by being called a honky and four eyes.

No, this stems from back when Bobby first started coaching at UM, and he was quoted as saying something like... "We are Montana, that other school down the road is State. They haven't earned the right to use the word Montana in their name." Just paraphrasing, but he made comments similar to that. That didn't really bother me, as it just showed the maturity level of Bobby at the time. I do think he's matured in the past 5 years however.

It could be worse

It could be a lot worse than state. Many of us remember when it was Montana State College. MSU is better than MSC.

Speaking of which...I started at MSC Bozeman, went straight through and graduated from MSU Bozeman. Somewhere during that time I purchased a large, Blue pennant from the MSC/U Bookstore emblazoned with Gold "STATE". Back then the school in missoula was referred to as "the U". Bozeman was "STATE". It's not a dirty word, I promise.

I like it personally. Something PURE about it and not wine/cheesed like the University of Montana. Best team in the State so why not call them STATE :)

TOTAL BS, Coach Hauck never said that or any thing like it. All he did was refer to you guys as state.

Personally if I was a cat (thank God I'm not) I would prefer to be called state. Anything to put distance between my big brother up in Missoula
.

Hauck is still as immature as he ever was. He shows no class at Cat/Griz time.

For his faults at least Kramer could congratulate the griz when he lost to them....which he didn't do that much.

Okay, I tried to stay out of this. But Mash, please explain to me (with proof of a legitmate quote, not a "my brother heard from his second cousin that Hauck told his brother's wife's nephew that the cats suck situation") how Hauck shows no class. I know cat fans don't like him. That's almost to be expected. But most of the stuff you guys say is complete urban legend.
