97 Griz-Cat Game
Now before you guys go crying on me, I have a legitimate question.
I am not saying Montana fans are any better than your fans.
This is not meant in a condecending manor.
FU if you think it is.
I was at the 97 game and I was talking some trash but the whole thing at the end of the game was a sickening display of humanity by BOTH sides when we were leaving the stadium.
I was down on the field jumping on the mud where the cat head was and watching stunned fans leave the stadium. My cat friends Wyatt, Bill, Roger and Pat were waling out with us when some jackass Griz fan 45 plus threw his beer on Wyatt. I tackled the guy in the mud and shoved his face into it in front of his family until he apoligized to my friend. not even 5 mins later in the parking lot behind the brick my Griz buddy John got into a fight with another drunk fan over spitting on his car.
When we were leaving the parking lot by the field house another friend of mine called and said some Griz players sister got punched on the field.
I was thinking all the way back to my house in Belgrade that it won't be long before people are getting killed every year over a fricken football game.
That was the last year I ever got in peoples faces about anything pertaining to the Brawl of the Wild. 2005 in Bozeman I watched a drunk kid knock down an elderly Griz couple in the tailgate area and thought about KO'ing the idiot.
It's both sides and I am not pointing fingers, but want anyone that is willing to respond to this question to answer.
Why is there so much hatred and venom between these 2 schools? I have been to a ton of other rivalry school football games and it isn't anywhere near as heated as this one?
What gives?

He deserved to be KO'd if he did it on purpose. Imagine if that was your mom and dad. I would have popped his nose.AlphaGriz1 wrote:2005 in Bozeman I watched a drunk kid knock down an elderly Griz couple in the tailgate area and thought about KO'ing the idiot.

It's a fricken game.
I like football as much or more than most people, hell I stay single just so I can travel to college games all over the country and I don't get hassled about it.
I went to the game last year in Blowsmen and hung out with Kevin and Randy at Bobcat Nations tailgate party. I actually had fun and only dealt with one asshole fan "outside the stadium". He wasn't part of the BN group BTW.
The people there were great, they drank all my vodka and only poked the usuall amount of crap my way. I had Celtic Cat and one other poster from here swing by, "just to see who the prick was that posts as AG1". They were all cool and I hope to repay any of the cool people at the BN tailgate party next year if you travel to Missoula.
Your more than wlecome to hit our tailgate and I will make damn sure OUR fans are cordial or they will have to deal with me.
20% of me can understand the illogic behind this Rivalry only because I did some incredibly stupid things until late into my 20's, I was just smart and lucky enough to not get caught.
We are all Montanan's and we should treat each other like it.

Re: 97 Griz-Cat Game
That was the year the parking lot had packed snow, it was melting and you had water on top of the ice making it very slippery. I walked by the same idiot and he came out with a cowbell shaking it in and near my face as I walked by for at least 25 yards. When I got to my friend Kevin's tailgate party I pointed him out to our buddy that was a MHP and told him to go arrest the jackass.Cat-theotherwhitemeat wrote:He deserved to be KO'd if he did it on purpose. While we were watching the idiot an older Griz couple ( I would guess about 60-70ish) came walking by very gingerly on the slippery lot and this idiot came out and started shaking his cowbell in their faces. The old lady grabbed onto her husbands arm and with a little help from the intimidating idiot one of them slipped and both went down hard. People helped them up and the group the idiot was with were all drunk and running off laughing about the whole thing.
It pissed me off and I wish I would have gone after the dumbass, but when I go to games anywhere I go out of my way to stay out of that crap anymore.

The best way to take of it is to police your own. What Alpha did was right on. A Griz smacked his Cat buddy and he, being a Griz, took care of the Griz. If you as a Cat fan see a Cat doing something rude to a Griz, tell him to knock it off. I think a Griz, or Cat, hearing it from one of his own is much more effective than the other way around.

Why is it so bad and especially why was 1997 so bad?
It is so bad because of the streak. The streak turned the normal rivalry into something ugly and deep hatred formed between the two sides. In 1997 you are what 10 or 12 years into the streak and it looks like MSU is going to break the streak only to see it vanish. The hatred got worse with each win during the streak. Now that we are several years removed and both sides seem to be evening out a little I think the hatred has lessened and the rivalry is becoming more tame again. Just my opinion, but I feel like I've seen the ebb and flow of the hatred and believe the reason for it is the streak.

I believe that was the 12th win in a row, because later that night i told my buddy Wyatt that next year is the bakers dozen and that he may never see the cats beat the Griz in his lifetime.
I kept going on and on about how Nebraska had beat KState like 28 years in a row....................so there was no reason to think the Griz are not capable of that.
I am evil.
I agree with rtb and his post for the most part and I am glad it's leveling out a bit.

For me the real dislike of all things Griz stems to the 5th win in the streak when the scoreboard operater in Missoula changed the entire display to 5 at the end of the game.
I was away from the series and didn't think about it for years and then caught a sattelite party and the realization came to me that even 10 years removed, I really disliked the Griz.
Still can't cheer for them no matter what. Would never stoop to violence but I did kick my nephew out of my car when I was taking him to a movie until he got rid of an ugly maroon hat with an offensive phrase written on it.

My exwife and I only went to one CAT griz game together, in all 15 years that we dated or were married. Annually, I pissed her off by doing whatever it took to get a ticket into the game. It pissed her off to no end, that I HAD to go to the damn CAT griz game.
I took her to the 97 game. From that day forward, she has understood why and she hates the griz too.

I've never said it that way, even before I moved to Montana it was always Griz-cat to me. I also know a number of cat fans who call it Griz-cat. But that's just me. Your results may differ.FTG06' wrote:Until you bonehead gizz fans start calling it Cat-Griz (which is not reflected in the title of this thread) again, the way it has ALWAYS been referred to (even by the alumni in my family who went to UM), that 2% will remain entrenched in bitterness.
Have a nice day.

It's Cats/griz
Type that 1,000,000,0000 times and you may be forgiven.
