Letter to Chronicle

And the bigger question: Would should have written the letter had they won?
What are her accusations? Not even that was she treated disrespectfully individually, but that many fans threw mud and had shirts on that were offensive and even spoke obscenities in the presence of others (things that never, never, never happen outside of Bozeman

). Church lady attacks again! Are the MSU fans ... SATAN!???
Helpful suggestion for next time, lady -- stay out of the tailgate section (the only place where mud would be thrown), and stay insulated in a comfortable booster section somewhere (like she obviously has at every other game she has attended) so you don't end up with the rowdy fans. Clearly, you can't take the heat, and are a little pissy when your team loses.

Was this Diane's first football rivalry game? She must have moved to Missoula from California and jumped on the Grizzly bandwagon. Fan disrespect at a rivalry game? I can't believe it.
I am guessing the Griz fans have never made anti-Bobcat shirts or said anything negatively about the Cats.
I am happy to see that she won't be coming back to Bozeman. If you can't stand the heat.....

I agree with BAC on this one and I have no problem with Bozo./
I do think they need to shut down the tailgate area ($10 area needs it the most) when the game starts. Bozo is just asking for trouble letting 2000 kids (that don't have tickets) stay out in the tailgate area getting drunker and drunker. It's IMHO getting a little ugly in the student section of the $10 tailgating compound. Let them start back up at half/time and maybe party for an hour or so after the game to help clear out the traffic. But, I'll say it again if you don't have a ticket you shouldn't be standing around in the tailgate area drinking 10 more beers. These kids aren't supporting the football team IMO.

Diane must have been the lady who sat a couple of seats down from me. My five year old and I were trying to get her to sing the Lulay song with us and she got mad and left (there was only about 2 minutes left). Can you imagine - the words aren't that hard to learn - even for a dUMb graduate.

Well said, BAC. It doesn't bother me one single bit when pissy, whiny fans like this complain about how they were treated in Bozeman. What the hell did they expect? The Cat/griz game is a huge rivalry, and we aren't
supposed to make it fun for the griz to come to Bozeman! I know there are plenty of people that cross the line, but to convince yourself that the exact same thing doesn't happen to Bobcat fans when we come to Missoula is just plain ignorant.
It bothers me a great deal when I hear about fans of other schools being treated poorly, ala NDSU this year, and I think our words and actions after that incident speak for themselves. I could care less when griz fans whine about people saying a few cuss words and wearing some really mean buttons.

I just love that she has labeled the entire program, university and town as classless and needing to fix the core problem due to "SOME" fans(that's her wording is SOME). That is just rigoddamndiculous as far as I'm concerned. Every program has it's bad fans, including the saintly Griz (just using this lady's thinking, not trying to smack at Griz fans on here). I watched a few guys get tossed from the tailgating area for being dicks and i was glad to see it. There is a line to stay on and sometimes fans do cross it but to label an entire school or the town of Bozeman is crap. I hope she doesn't come back, 1 down, 70,000 to go
I think BAC does ask a good question, would this letter have been written if there was a Griz victory. I'm not so sure, but that's just my opinion.

And not to mention, I feel terrible for the guy that had a box seat. If you are a Griz fan coming into a box seat full of Cat fans, you are naive to think you aren't going to get a little ribbing. Suck it up! You have a box seat, would they not wipe for you or what?

If anyone would like to send Diane a quick email to let her know how bad you feel about how she was treated,

here is her address:
diane@gillespieonline.com
She's at her desk and responds pretty quickly. Here is what I got for a response...
Hi....thanks for the email....at least we are playing football this weekend...AT HOME!

Exactly. If people are being physically threatened or their property is being destroyed, then by all means say something (preferably to the cops or security personnel) and I will be among the first 100,000 or so Bobcat fans who will stand with them to demand change. But to write a letter with the obvious intent to try to put down all MSU fans because the lady was offending by some cursing and funny shirts (and mud throwing?) is pathetic. I have little tolerance for newspaper letter writers who pull this kind of crap. I see it a lot in smaller town newspapers, though. It's kind of funny how some people like to take potshots at other towns/Universities in this manner.
Come up with some examples of people doing something a little more menacing than throwing mud or cursing, and we will care. Otherwise, put down the keyboard/pen back away from your desk, and go back to watching the Disney Channel and never look back.

Although I thought it was really cool to look out during the game and see thousands of people filling the tailgate section, and most of my family was out there having a great time (including my Mom and a couple uncles), you are probably right. It probably is a liability nightmare waiting to happen.
We just need a bigger stadium so more of those people can get tickets. I know we will never have a stadium big enough to accomodate the demand for Cat/Griz (about 50K?), but several thousand more seats would go a long ways towards taking care of the overflow demand we have on a regular basis these days.

Pa...lease....What a bunch of whiners. And to think it doesn't happen in Missoula. It would be interesting to go to next years game dressed in our Blue and Gold, take some video, then make a documentary out of it. Then we'll see how courteous and saintly the Griz fans are...haha

Wow is this lady a psycho? She gives us Griz fans a bad name (like we didn't have one w/Cat fans!) People were wearing mean shirts? *gasp* & they were socially unacceptable? Did she think she was going to black tie gala? Get a grip lady. As somebody who has worn a "mean" shirt about the Cats I fully support anybody's right to wear a FUNNY shirt poking fun at the other school. Thanks for that email addy WBTFG I think I am off to give her my 2 cents.

Hi....thanks for the email....at least we are playing football this weekend...AT HOME!
Good to see that she is a true partisan and not just a casual fan who got lost and ended up at the game in Bozeman ... which makes the intent of her letter all the more obvious.
Can we say,"Poor loser?"
Just to unburden myself, I once went to a Cat/Griz game in Missoula where I, too, left disappointed. And I, too, saw lewd shirts and heard people swear at the top of their lungs and I even saw a couple fights. But you know, the thought of writing a letter to the Missoulian never crossed my mind. I guess I just came in realizing that I was going to a football game on Saturday and also realized that the church service was not being held until Sunday. Knowing the difference between the two, I managed to survive just fine ... except for the disappointment part in the game. I guess I just able to deal with that better introspectively than some.

The one thing that I can give her credit for is signing her name to the letter. Now she gets to be accountable for her words.

You wore a mean shirt about our Bobcats? And you call yourself a respectable human? I am going to write a letter right away.
On a side note Diane I would like to share with you my collection of shirts.
If I get some time later maybe I will indulge you. They are quite funny.

I think Diane might be Griz62's daughter.
I love it when a Griz fan all decked out in maroon walks through the tailgate area (especially the student side) and assumes no one will make a smartass comment to them. What a sheltered life they must live in... To be honest, I didn't see any Griz fans treated awful, nor did I expect to see anyone treated poorly.
Diane truly showed the amount of intelligence she possesses when she decided to label an entire community and fan base due to some t-shirts, off colored language, and "mud slinging" (which no one else happen to see).
I heard Diane thinks all Italian people are in the mob because she saw an episode of Sopranos...

I'm not sure of the nature of your initial email to her WBTFG, but with that retort of hers and assuming she never addressed anything in your email about the nature of her complaints, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if she's married to one of the egriz fanatics.
Maybe Diane is bearbac???!!

Have to give my thoughts on this.
First of all, I know I'll probably take some flack for this, but there is a difference between a game in Missoula and one in Bozeman and it's my belief that it's worse in Bozeman. Here's why....in Missoula, most of the tailgating done in the vicinity of the stadium is done be an older crowd. Half of the tailgating done in Bozeman is done by drunken college students and they generally go above the playful ribbing. This is because in Missoula, they charge a lot more for parking, etc., making it too expensive for the students to gather in one big crowd. I'm not saying that it's right, but that's how it is. The students in Missoula go above the playful ribbing as well, but they aren't numbered in the thousands located directly next to the stadium.
Our mistake was actually walking through the student tailgate section (won't make that mistake again). I'm used to walking all around Wash/Griz stadium and not seeing a large group of overly-drunk students like the one in Bozeman. I realize they are out there in Missoula and are just as nasty. Bad things do happen at both places and it's idiotic to think it doesn't. But the tailgating at both schools is certainly a different atmosphere.
We did have things thrown at us (beer cans, snow balls, etc) and it almost came to blows a couple times. I definitely thought our safety was at risk. It's our fault for walking through that section. I'm not going to dwell on it and it's certainly not worth a letter or any amount of animosity towards the town of Bozeman.
When we walked through the other side, we took some ribbing and it was expected, no big deal. Most of the fans were great and the drunk college students shouldn't be a reason to take it out on the many other great fans of MSU. Both sides have them, neither one any better or worse than the other. It's just more prevalent on one side of Bobcat stadium IMHO.

That post is ... perfectly reasonable. Take note, Diane. That is how one inserts rationale thought into a discussion.
My mom and sister said that there were a LOT of snowballs flying before, during and after the game out there, and that a couple little fights did break out as a result. It sounded like it was all fun and games, until someone gets hits in the face (we all know how that goes).
So although I thinks it's crap if people were throwing snowballs at you (in an aggressive way) because of your colors, it sounds like there was a lot of Cat on Cat snowball action throughout the entire time as well.
Everybody I talked to that was out there said they had a great time (mostly people who aren't students) ... which tells me that they were lucky enough to avoid catching one in the face.
