Bozeman man arrested with more than 4 pounds of marijuana
By TED SULLIVAN, Chronicle Staff Writer
A Bozeman man accused of intending to sell more than 4 pounds of marijuana with a street value of about $17,500 is expected to be charged Tuesday in Gallatin County Justice Court.
Javier Martinez-Flores, 26, will be charged with possession of marijuana with an intent to distribute.
Martinez-Flores, who speaks Spanish, did not appear in court Monday because an interpreter was unavailable. He remains in Gallatin County's jail while awaiting his arraignment.
A North Willson Avenue resident called police Friday morning and said men were on his doorstep, pounding on the door. He said one of them had a handgun and another had a baseball bat or metal bar.
The men left the house in a green passenger car with a Washington license plate, according to court records.
Within minutes, officers stopped two men in the vehicle on East Mason Street.
The passenger in the car, Kirk Barsness, had a $5,000 warrant for his arrest for possession of dangerous drugs, a felony. He told officers the driver, Martinez-Flores, did not speak English.
Martinez-Flores was arrested and the vehicle was towed to the Montana State University police impound lot. A drug-sniffing dog indicated there were drugs in the car after it smelled all four doors of the vehicle from the outside.
Martinez-Flores was interviewed by a sheriff's deputy who speaks Spanish. He told the deputy the vehicle did not belong to him, then he gave the detectives permission to search the vehicle.
Detectives found four packages of marijuana. The marijuana was wrapped in plastic, covered in grease and wrapped in duct tape on the outside.
The packages were underneath blankets on the back seat of the vehicle. They weighed roughly 376, 578, 502 and 512 grams.
Martinez-Flores was jailed on the charge of possession with intent to distribute marijuana. No charges were filed against Barsness and he was released.
Martinez-flores will likely appear in court Tuesday at 11 a.m.
