World Cup selection a joke
Anyone else think that the way the World Cup selects the teams is a complete joke? They use a damn formula so they can put in the team that they want. Plus performances that happened 7+ years ago matter! What the hell? The last place performance by the U.S. in 1998 had an affect on this year's selection. Just plain stupid. And, this year, we beat Mexico and they got a seed over the U.S. I am sad.

Yes I'm talking about soccer. This is almost worse than the BCS, but I have a hard time hating anything more than the BCS. I've liked watching soccer and rugby more and more these days, but I just can't get over how much the U.S. got screwed.HelenaCat95 wrote:Thanks for putting this thread on the Smack Board.
Any discussion of soccer (I think that is what you are talking about) should be on the Smack Board.
And just to ensure that this thread stays on the Smack Board - Griz suck

Over my lifetime, I've probably watched 10 minutes worth of Professional or World Cup-level soccer and I simply cannot understand the attraction. They play for several hours, during which there might be a total of 1 minute where either team has a legitimate chance to score a goal.
Soccer = Communist Sport; it keeps the masses "dumbed down" and docile.

I think we've seen some of those riots where people have been getting maimed and sometimes even killed.
Those crazy European/South American/African nations take "futbol" a "tad" bit more seriously than the US takes ANY of their favorite sports in my opinion.

If I paid for tickets to sit through 90 minutes of that s hit and only got one goal out of the deal, I'd riot as well.lifeloyalsigmsu wrote:Docile?El_Gato wrote:Over my lifetime, I've probably watched 10 minutes worth of Professional or World Cup-level soccer and I simply cannot understand the attraction. I have to give you credit you post some of the funniest smack talk. When I saw the preview for that show in the theatre I was thinking, "What the hell is this? Oh no.....this isn't looking good. Please tell me this is fake."

Where's the love?
I played soccer in Montana for 10+ years and I enjoyed it very much. It really is sad that people have to make fun of soccer just because they don't understand it. Soccer is a great sport and is a true players sport. The coaches can't call a timeout and there are very few "plays". And for those of you who say it is for people who can't handle football, you are just ignorant. Soccer is actually a very physical sport when played at a competitive level and with only shinguards as padding. I don't think I ever came out of a game without being sore and bruised, it's a rough sport.
Just because you do not understand a particular sport, please show a little respect for those of us who do enjoy soccer.
Oh, and by the way, I agree the US got jobbed. We'll be lucky to make it into the quarterfinals. We're getting closer every year though to being one of the truly elite teams.

I'm with you - I love soccer, and I really LOVE the World Cup. Americans are too impatient, and generally only find enjoyment when teams are scoring points, which is really too bad. Soccer is a very cerebral game, much like a chess match with live players. The enjoyment comes in the huge build-up to every goal, which only happens a few times every game, which makes each goal something to truly savor.soccertodd wrote:Where's the love?

The U.S.A. did indeed get jobbed - we should have been seeded. I have to think that Italy and the Czechs (and Guana, too, I suppose) aren't too happy seeing the U.S. in their bracket either, though. Too make it even worse, it looks like whoever comes out of our bracket at #2 will have to face Brazil in the second round - ouch. I just want another shot at Germany - we totally outplayed them in our last match in Korea, just couldn't get one in goal. Should be fun. I was planning on making the trip over there a few years ago, but I don't think I would really feel safe right now... too bad.

Though I prefer " American" football, this kind of comment about soccer if pathetic.El_Gato wrote:Over my lifetime, I've probably watched 10 minutes worth of Professional or World Cup-level soccer and I simply cannot understand the attraction. The "other nations" of the world call it football because you can't touch the ball with your hands, quite unlike our version. I think our labeling our our football makes NO SENSE, but we all love it.
Soccer is universally popular worldwide because it is one game that every kid on the planet can play. I have been to nations where kids played it with plastic, a can, or any form of cheap ball you can get. Quite unlike our requirements for kids to play football, numerous camps, road trips, and all the dollars and time. Most kids in those other places on the planet play it because they can.
Though I don't prefer it to our game, I do appreciate it for what it is for the kids who grew up with the only game they could play... football... I mean soccer.

yup, the cowboys I love are straight

no swishing in wranglers for me, like REAL HETEROSEXUAL men. aren't we off the thread though - i played soccer. They put us "assertive" girls as full backs to protect our goal. It isn't as wimpy as you think and Soccer has a larger world wide audience than american football.
