I don't think that is true. I can remember Montana playing Idaho in the first round before. This was most likely before most of the people over in missoula were on the bandwagon so they cannot remember that.
I assume Weltercat that you're bandwagon barb is referring to me? I got out of the Army in 1998 and enrolled at UM that year. I was 22 and was (at first) attracted to the forestry program. Although I'd always followed the Griz before my arrival at UM (my father and brothers attended) I became a huge Griz fan that year and remain so through graduation until today. Does that make me a member of the bandwagon?
Nevermind the fact that your retort...er, lame smack......came in a serious discussion on the regular athletics board regarding this year's playoffs with regards to the PSU/MSU playoff question. It had nothing to do with the Griz in any shape or form and yet you couldn't get the Griz outta your head for five minutes could you? You reek of Griz envy. I'll remember that if I hear anyone pointing at Griz fans for posting Smack on the Athletic Board.
Lame!

I meant for this to be on the Smack Board. I wasn't aware of where I was posting which kind of makes me look like a schloob I admit.
Please move to smack mods. Thanks!

Weltercat's original post should have been moved to smack.
But since I'm too lazy to find the original thread for this, he is partially correct: Montana got screwed once after winning the BSC title and had to go play AT Idaho in the first round. They lost, and I believe Idaho went very deep in the playoffs that year. After that, the rule was changed. Teams from the same conference cannot meet in the first round by rule. See Matt Dougherty's columns for confirmation.

Yeah...and since we're in Smack now, I'll take this opportunity to point out that this should be a major relief to Cat fans: if you're fortunate enough to get in at 7-4, you can rest assurred that you won't have to come back to Wa Griz for another beating until at least Round 2.

It's on Page 2 of the "MSU's 4-loss case" thread. Which was a great discussion minus that dingleberry statement. I didn't mean to get too harsh with Welter but it annoys the daylights outta me when a good topic gets hijacked with a stupid statement like that. I didn't really care about the bandwagon barb itself. Living in Florida BN and eGriz are the best places to get information about MT football. And it seems that nearly every time something constructive gets going some ding-a-long (we certainly have ours) ruins it.
How the hell do you go from having a conversation about the "MSU/PSU 4-loss" dilemma with a question about first round rules to bandwagon Griz fans? Dumb.
So there is a
current rule that keeps conference teams from playing each other in the playoffs? A good rule as near as I can tell.

Only in the first round, Tampa. After that, all bets are off.

That's what I meant.....first round. Thanks!

With all smack aside, a sincere thanks to you and all the others for surving our wonderful country.
