Isn’t that like winning gold in the special Olympics?????Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - After defeating Northeast Conference champion Monmouth, 27-7, in the inaugural Gridiron Classic on Saturday, San Diego remains at No. 1 in the final Sports Network I-AA Mid-Major Top 10 Poll of 2006. The top billing means that the Toreros will be the recipient of the 2006 Sports Network Cup, to be presented on Dec. 14th, on the eve of the NCAA Division I Football Championship title game in Chattanooga, TN. San Diego received all 20 first-place votes and 200 points in the final poll to finish the season as the wire-to-wire No. 1 team in the rankings.
The Toreros become the first team in the six-year history of The Sports Network Cup to claim back-to-back honors, and are the first team to win two Sports Network Cups overall. The Toreros claim’s the PFL’s third honor, with Dayton also winning the hardware in 2002. Sacred Heart won the inaugural Cup in 2001, while Duquesne took home the hardware in 2003 and Monmouth won the cup in 2004 before the Toreros claimed the last two titles. San Diego went 11-1 under head coach Jim Harbaugh this season.
