Request
I really don't want this board to turn into a pissing match on whether we should fire Mick or not.
I think it's hilarious on efriz how after every jizz loss you'll find peope coming out of the woodwork who want to fire the coach/coordinator, and after every win half of the members want to give the entire coaching staff BJ's. Whenever I read their board after a griz football game (apparently very few care about bball) I am always glad that I am not a part of the fickleness that is part of being a friz fan.
I think that most cat fans are just that...CAT FANS. Not Cat football fans, not Cat basketball fans, but die hard supporters of Montana State University and everything that it stands for. My request is can we please be a little less dramatic than those douche bags (not everyone) on efriz, and not demant Durham's head after every loss, and then kiss his ass after every win?
I think we can definitely talk about what the players/coaching staff need to work on, but I would love to see us be a little bit less Bi-Polar than the ugly step sister.
Thanks,
WB. TFG

If cat fans did not pressure the school, we would still have Solomon (SP?) as the football coach. You should have seen the face of high-ranking AD when I told him my brother refused to donate any more money to the school until the football team beat the Griz. Granted, that is a poor attitude on my brother's part, but he got tried of 16 years of losses. (He worked with too many Griz Supports)
College sports is a business with the biggest revenue streams being men’s football and basketball. Mick cannot even get a sell out during the Cat/Griz game. How can you expect the program to grow and improve if the coach cannot bring in the dollars?
His coach style leads to boring games. He must have some kind of rule against dunking, because the kids never do it. I would be a rich man if I was paid $100 for every 10-point lead we lost during the 1st half of the second period. Just when a player gets hot, the kid gets benched. Its like he punishes his players for playing well and getting the crowd into the game.
I have nothing against Mick, he is a very nice man but his results are not up to Cat Standards. If he was working in the private sector, he would have lost his job a long time ago. He has become to comfortable in his position. There is nothing like the fear of losing your job to perform at a higher level.

BobCatFan: Some of the things you bring up are indeed correct (i.e. intercollegiate athletics are a business and the attendance is unacceptabe). However, in my eyes many of the things in you post eliminate your credibility. The dunking comment was ridiculous. Do you even attend the games? I recall Al Beye dunking the ball four times in about ten minutes of playing time. I for one enjoy the style of play that THIS YEARS team plays. For the first time in awhile we actuall have some speed, quickness, and athleticism on the squad. The past few season we lost many games not because of skill or basketball IQ, but because of altheticism.
This is undoubtedly a make or break year for Mick. Do you really believe that the only people that don't realize this are Mick, his staff, and the team? Mick knows he has to win and knows that the pressure is on this year more than any other of his career.
The team is 1-0 in my eyes and wbtfg makes a very good point. Let's support the situation and if the cats have a successful season (conference championship/NCAA berth) with virtually no significant seniors on the roster and a perhaps one of their best players redshirting (Ted Morris), then I believe that Mick deserves some credit. Our roster is filled with JUCO transfers and most people realize that the adjustment to division 1 takes awhile and most have much better senior seasons than junior seasons (i.e. Calvin Ento).
I know it's easy to bash the coach and b#tch and moan about how we need a change, but the fact is Mick is the head basketball coach and a TRUE BOBCAT FAN will support the team no matter what (i.e. the streak). Go Cats, prove all the fair weather fans wrong!!!!!!

If this team can play with everybody else in the league for two whole months and not get tired or beat up, then I say Mick has been successful in beginning the transition back to respectability. I just couldn't bear the hopes in January and the declines in February that have generally taken place the last 5 years or so...excluding the Latovic year where there wasn't really a decline, just a bad game.

There is a difference! Cats fans are almost all Alumni or current students or at a minimum they live in the Bozeman area. Griz fans are mostly a) out of staters who recently moved to Montana and jumped on the bandwagon, b) fare weather fans that live in Western Montana but did not attend U of M, or c) have the type of character to ONLY back a winner.
Many Griz fans will tell you the same thing. Thats why your attendence will drop like a rock after your first losing season

Crap Durham must be busy. I didn't know he was in charge of marketing and promotions for Cat/TTTW (team to the west)! Remind me to complain to him next time I dislike the schedule posters!

Why don’t you show me the statistical evidence to back up your statement.gtapp wrote: There is a difference! If the cats fans have so much more character than GRIZ FANS (you know the ones, only can back a winner), why haven’t the stands been full these last few years for your football games. Talk about the kettle calling the pot black.

Do Griz fans ever get sick of requiring statistical evidence? All of you remind me of a playground bully who could come up with no answer other than "prove it"! Apparently, although I have nothing to show to "prove" it, you don't live here and haven't been to a recent cat game. The seats are quite full. Sorry no numbers to show it, but I have been at all of the games. I can "prove" that not every griz 'fan' even purchased the shirt they are wearing:

Don't get me wrong, I am glad the poor people at Warm Springs had something to open during the holidays, but you can't believe everything you see. (I can't prove that either)

No just BS postings. Are you sure I haven’t been to a cat game recently? I am one of those GRIZ fans that root for the cats.Buttealum wrote:Do Griz fans ever get sick of requiring statistical evidence? Wearing a GRIZ sweatshirt does not a GRIZ Fan make!
gtapp and wbtfg have an opinion which is fine, but these blanket statements on having better fans is bs. If they want to point to some thing of substance then fine, i.e. cat fans contribute more money than GRIZ fans, cat fans travel in greater numbers than GRIZ Fans, etc.

I will 2nd the comment from Helcat above. Keep in mind we beat an ISU team that lost at home to Carrol college as well. Weber game was a very good win for us but ISU we are suppossed to win that. I gave credit to Durham after the Weber game and I will continue to give him credit. I did see some changes in the Weber game that I liked (defensively especially and the short range jumpers instead of settling for the 3 everytime). 2 wins on the road in a crappy conference hasn't sold me so far this year. I will say this, I don't think MSU is a last place team like the predictions say. Like I said before, I like Mick and I think he can coach very well at this level .... but he has to be more consistent. I'm a Bobcat fan that has VERY VERY HIGH expectations for our program. MSU is one of the crown jewel schools in the Big Sky and I expect them to be in the top 4 in conference EVERY YEAR in hoops and football. I will say this no matter if the coach is Kramer/Solomonson/Hyssel/Durham/Starner you name it.
You have to have that mindset to be a dominant program. This is a message board where people express their opinions on the teams/coaching. I admit calling for the firing of Durham in the middle of the year early in conference is too early. Let us talk about this in the offseason after the season is over. I will continue to express my displeasure for the quick/long/multiple 3 point shots though. Maybe now with Beye/Towsley back this will change. I am not a big fan of the 3 pont bombers with no conscience on taking a good shot versus a bad one. For those of you who like this system, can you explain why MSU always lets teams come roaring back at the end of game? Free Throws/non stop 3 point shooting. That is the nature of the 3 game.

Very well said Cardiac. Things are certainly looking better, but it is a long season and we have all seen Durham's teams falter the second half. I also think we should concentrate on cheering on the Cats, putting a few more butts in the seats, and hope this team is different. Mick and the kids did a good job this week. The jury is still out, but lets beat the friz this week in granolaville and keep it going. The talk of firing Mick should wait until after the season.
The game in missoula will be interesting. I am interested in msalcat's thoughts on the friz. Kriskowiak seems to be doing things the way I want Mick to do them. He has at least two freshmen starting or playing a lot and really contributing and he seems to have signed some more promising HS kids. I think Mick has to get back to basics after this year and start building a program form the ground up.

Exactly. If he wins the Sky, I'll give him another year to do the same. That is the only thing that is going to make me jump of the "fire Mick train". But even if he wins this one, he will have to have another solid year next year. 1 BSC championship in 20 years is just not acceptible for me, because I want this program to grow and atleast attempt to compete with the big boys sometime in the future.CLUB 126 wrote:Who are you poeple, Mick just won a few games and poeple think we should back off of him.
How long has he been at MSU?
96 BSC champs, thats it!
