From The Trib.

Billings Central's Heringer breaks 1,000-point barrier

Billings Central Catholic High may never have another girls' basketball player like Shannon Cate, who led the Rams to three consecutive state Class A championships (1985-87) before enjoying a brilliant career at the University of Montana.

Currently, however, there's a Rams hoopster who compares favorably to Cate (now Shannon Cate-Schweyen, an assistant women's hoops coach at UM).

Her name is Jenny Heringer, a 5-foot-11 senior guard who has led the Rams to an 8-2 record and the No. 3 ranking among Class A girls' teams.

With 22 points in a 43-36 victory over Glendive this past Friday night, Heringer moved into the No. 2 spot on Central's all-time scoring list. The effort gave her 1,019 points, 17 ahead of Michelle Studer and 783 behind Cate. She reached 1,000 points on a 3-point field goal just under two minutes into the game.

Heringer also tallied 22 points in a 53-42 victory over Sidney on Saturday, boosting her career total to 1,041. If not for a torn ACL in her left knee, an injury that prevented her from playing as a freshman, that number would be higher.

Heringer poured in a career-high 39 points in a 66-53 loss to Hardin on Jan. 11, breaking Cate's school single-game record of 36, set against Colstrip in 1987. She also has games of 25 and 24 points.

At the midway point of the regular season, she's averaging 23.0 points a game.

By the time her senior season is over, Heringer will have passed Cate as Central's all-time assist leader. She'll finish second in both scoring and rebounding, behind Cate.

Heringer, who is coached by her father, Bucky, had a fine junior season. She averaged 19.2 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists while leading Central to a 20-4 record and runner-up honors at the State A tournament. She was voted most valuable player honors at the state tournament, and also earned spots on the Class A All-State and Tribune Super-State teams.

She has given a verbal commitment to continue her basketball career at Montana State University.

She is going to be a great player for us, and I can't wait to see her on the court next year. It wouldn't surprise me if she was a 4 year starter for us.
