Bozeman's Fletcher fits in football
By PATRICK GURCZYNSKI, Chronicle Sports Writer
Dane Fletcher is a busy man.
He played nearly every position, every day for the Bozeman Bucks baseball team this summer.
This fall, he's balanced practicing hockey with the Bozeman Icedogs, playing for the Gallatin Valley hockey team and a Montana select team.
Last week, he volunteered to help get high school kids excited about voting with Class Active Citizenship.
In between all of that, he's managed to play middle linebacker for the Hawks, help turn the defense around and lead the team into the Class AA state playoffs.
He'll look to prolong his busy schedule tonight against Billings West at 7:30.
"I'm thrilled just to get this opportunity," Fletcher said. "This is a dream that I definitely don't want to wake up from."
It's hard to believe that Fletcher finds time to sleep.
Baseball ended just in time for three-a-day football practices.
He practically lived at the school because when he wasn't on the field, he was in the weight room with friend/lifting partner James Keiser.
"When your body is so broken down, it feels like your muscles build faster," Fletcher said. "Plus, I just love to lift weights."
That dedication has paid off this season.
Fletcher has been a constant on both sides of the ball for the Hawks. It seems whenever there's a play, he's a part of it.
It's a surprising turnaround from two years ago.
In middle school, Fletcher hit a growth spurt and struggled to adjust to his new frame.
Even his first two years of high school were a learning experience.
Last year, things started to come around.
"I've really stepped it up this year," Fletcher said. "I started to figure it out last year, but it's all come together this year."
This season's success has altered his future plans.
He a lock for college, but he's unsure of what sport he'll be playing when he gets there.
Baseball has brought interest from Concordia in California and Western Washington.
He's looking at Montana State, Colorado State, University of Washington and Boise State for football.
The wild card, however, is hockey.
Fletcher has been involved with hockey since he was five.
It was at a friend's house watching neighborhood kids roller blading that he first became interested.
Soon after, he got his first pair of ice skates and started working as the Icedogs' water boy.
It wasn't until his freshman year that he laced up his skates as a member of the Icedogs' practice squad.
"They were huge," Fletcher said. "I was terrified of their slap shots."
Fletcher was playing against kids four to six years older, considerably stronger and sizably bigger.
His passion for hockey persuaded him to stick with it, and he's become a better player because of it.
Now, when he faces an Icedog slap shot it's not so traumatic.
"I'm not scared anymore," he said. "It's just another day."
Today is not just another day for Fletcher and the Hawks.
Bozeman will be looking to avenge an opening-day loss to the Golden Bears and erase the memory of last year's first-round defeat.
Fletcher said he believes that this game will produce the eventual state champion.
"Our record doesn't show how much we've turned things around," he said, "but as players we've really stepped it up a notch."
He was a first team all-state at Linebacker, and also made the Tribune's super-state team.
He is 6'2 200lbs, and I hear he is FAST FAST FAST
