Washington Named NAIA Player of the Week
Tuesday, January 25, 2005
Southern Oregon University All-American forward Shea Washington became the first men’s basketball player in program history to receive NAIA Div. II Player of the Week status twice during a career today.
The 6-foot-7 Springfield native earned the national accolade after posting mind-boggling numbers in SOU’s key Cascade Conference wins last weekend against then-second-ranked Western Baptist (73-70) and Concordia (77-61).
Washington outperformed Medford hero Eric Fiegi by compiling a game-high 28 points as well as a team season-best 18 rebounds in the WBC upset, and he posted his league-leading 12th double-double of the season by scoring 31 points and grabbing 11 boards against CU.
The weekend performances upped the former Thurston High star to No. 2 in the 10-team conference for scoring (19.9) and padded his loop-best rebounding clip to 10.9. Washington is also among the circuit top-10 for blocks (No. 2, 1.74 per game), field goal percentage (4th, .556) and free throw efficiency (10th, .766).
The Montana State-Bozeman transfer is fifth among NAIA players for rebounding, 14th for scoring and 25th for blocks.
Washington, a three-time conference player-of-the-week selection who surpassed the 1,000-point plateau in less than two seasons on Saturday, received the same NAIA honor last February.
Washington and the first-place Raiders, who moved up 14 spots to No. 10 in today’s ranking — the school’s highest perch since 1999 — visit Evergreen State and Northwest this weekend.
