Mullins UM/Fisher MSU
Grizzlies get touted C.M.R. linebacker
Austin Mullins, a highly sought after high school football player from C.M. Russell in Great Falls, has made a verbal commitment to play for the University of Montana.
Mullins, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound middle linebacker said he narrowed his decision down to Montana and Montana State despite offers from Division I programs Wyoming, Colorado State, Oregon and Southern Methodist. He said it was a tough decision, but thought that UM would be a better fit both athletically and academically.
Mullins was also considering offers from Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Columbia, but the Ivy League schools all required that he attend one year of prep school before he could actually suit up for college football.
Mullins was an AA all-state selection at middle linebacker and was also the AA defensive player of the year. He was all state as a junior at middle linebacker and also received honorable mention for his play at tight end. He said he hasn't discussed whether he will red-shirt his first season and said UM may move him to defensive end.
Fisher to join Bobcats as kicker and Punter
Eric Fisher, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound kicker/punter from Billings West has made a verbal commitment to play football for Montana State University.
Fisher is a first team AA all-state punter and second team kicker. He converted 78-of-85 PATs and made 16-of-22 field goals over the past two seasons. He had a long of 47 yards as a junior and also converted from 44 yards his junior year.
Fisher was an all-conference soccer player this season, is the back-up center on the Bears basketball team and runs the 400 in track. He plans on majoring in civil engineering and cited the coaches, campus and players as reasons for choosing MSU.

I don't think Mullins meant UM was a better academic institution than MSU, he just meant it was a better fit. Which is a bit self-depricating (jokes), but that doesn't make him a bad guy. Apparently he thought the music/marketing at UM was better than whatever MSU offers in those areas. I'm assuming he's pretty intelligent from the Ivy league offers. If he had been into engineering, then he'd probably be a Bobcat. I'd think Cat fans should be pretty happy that his decision was difficult for him. That's a sign of progress in itself.

JUst a couple of notes on Fisher & Schreibeis from West High. Both are incredible athletes, and not just in football. Fisher will be a four sport letter winner this year. He has a monster leg especially for kickoffs, where 9 times out of ten he gets touchbacks or just kicks them out of the endzone. He kicks many of extra point and field goals into Pioneer Park behind Daylis Stadium and was responsible for damaging the new scoreclock at the other end of the stadium with one of his kicks. He was also the first team all-state punter this year. He also was one of the best soccer players in the state this fall, while playing football on the side. He is key player to the West High basketball team this year and is about a 51-52 second 400 runner in track. I don't think you could ask for a better athlete in a kicker. He also has some pretty good size as well. Schrebeis is one of those kids who will get bigger and better as he ages. He is already a well put togther kid and has the body to put on a lot more. He is an extremely hard worker in the weight room. He has good size and speed for a big kid as well and is a two year starter on the basketball team. He also has a competeive edge on the field that won't be denied and I can see him being more valuable in the long run than Klaboe will be at UM. Its nice to see some West kids going to MSU, its been awhile.
I swear, it's like I'm playin' cards with my brother's kids or somethin'. You nerve-wrackin' sons-a-bitches.'

All I heard (very second hand) is that he, or his parents, wanted him closer to home. So it looks to be a battle between Bolton and Fisher next year. Fisher is a bit bigger, but Bolton is also a very good athlete for a kicker. Bolton was a top receiver for Great Falls High and was their starting point guard in basketball. I think we will be fine there next year with either, or both, kids. Could see a scenarion where Fisher kicks off and Bolton does the regular placekicking, but it all depends on how they look next fall.

Actually, the University of Montana is refered to as "the Berekley of Montana." But, Eugene gets called "the Missoula of Oregon" so everything works out.
Actually, Montana and Montana State are both DI athletic programs. You should send a nasty note to the author.iaafan wrote:Mullins, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound middle linebacker said he narrowed his decision down to Montana and Montana State despite offers from Division I programs Wyoming, Colorado State, Oregon and Southern Methodist. The B.G.: Never said UM and MSU weren't D-I programs. Ah, the ol' I-A/I-AA designation sticklers. Do you mean the Berkeley of Montana? There's a reason for that and it has nothing to do with academics, not that I mind the reason. The reason is a lot more fun than doing homework, but you probably already knew that, eh?
