BTW he shrunk well in height!Kenneth Plummer is the 25 year old head coach that took over from Rile Lynch-Cole and Richard Arias recently at Oxnard high school. He carries Herculean expectations on his back that are greater than his Greek god physique of 6-3 230 lbs - he has to compete with Ventura, Buena, and fill the incredibly big shoes left by the well loved former coaches at Oxnard high school two years ago.
He represents an example of excellence of what's best about this county. He's a native of New York that journeyed here to get a chance to play and prove at Moorpark College. He went on to Montana State a few years ago and realized something.
As Plummer puts it, "Man, this is where the action is. To get a chance to coach against Buena and Ventura is like going against the boys' version of coach Steve Smith and Oak Hill Academy back east. That's why I'm loving the opportunity to coach here and learn from the best. I'm trying to honor those who came before me and build something great here at Oxnard. With recently graduated girls like Amber Jackson, who was a high major caliber player last year, that might have brought on the expectation that Oxnard can bring in that 'third' dominant program to the county. We are young and ready for that challenge as our mostly sophomore girls on the varsity grow to be more talented juniors and seniors next year."
Plummer represents the torch being passed on to a new breed of coach in the area that wants to replicate the mountain-sized success of those before them. Can he do it? Plummer advocates for his girls to achieve high academic standards and capitalize on scholarship offers that can be theirs through hard work. Plummer puts in more hours of training than seems humanly possible. So the answer of will he be successful in carrying the torch is easy: he will do it or die trying. Plummer is constantly on the phone trying to get his girls those college looks at a scholarship, and talented girls such as 6'0 class of 07' Jordan Kuzma who leads the state in field goal percentage is an indicator that Plummer has the hallmark of great coaching: his girls believe in him and themselves.
Will Ventura County continue to dominate after legendary coach Vaughn steps down? As long as there are more Kenny Plummers, Ann Larsons, and a community that supports their stellar programs in this area it seems a lock to be one of the most dominant girls' basketball areas in the state if not the country.
But there's another factor that has led to Ventura County excellence: the AAU connection. That will be explored in Part Two on Thursday.
