I believe that playing higher caliber teams is good for the team. I believe there is often a let-down when we play these smaller schools. We are notorious for playing to the level of our oppenent. We could play the cougs tough and then come back the next week and lose to Central Washington. I think that is true in competition in general. You are going to get better playing better competition. I think it is important for us to go to these larger venues to play so we can get the experience of playing in a hostile environment. This will prepare us for playing playoff games at Mcneese St. or Northern Iowa. When I played, I remember going to UAB and it was one of my most memorable experiences as a player. [/quote]

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

Cat Grad: No biggie here, and it's funny how time and distance play tricks on our memories, but Spurrier didn't show up as head coach at UF until 1990. Galen Hall was head coach in 1988 and was dismissed for some type of infraction during the '89 season. Gary Darnell took over for the balance of the season and Spurrier was subsequently hired in 90. The thing I remember most was that Florida put up 50 points in the second half. That is very hard to do at home when a team like Florida had about 100 players suited up. I know we scored 84 at home on Eastern Oregon in 1985, but we led at halftime by 50 or 60 something.

You're right; I actually knew that, but because I've loved Florida being married to an UGA grad...and Spurrier's comments about UGA over the years...anyway, hate to look like the moron all the time, but you see, I've hit my head and...

If I'm not mistaken, that's the game the whole country discovered Widmer. Another advantage of giving our kids a chance to see what they have against the best and show the scouts the kids that chose to come here instead of going to or staying in D1 schools. Four or five years ago Furman had three kids drafted after playing up.

Widmer did have a good game, if fact we had some real talent everywhere. Our linebackers were as good or better than this year. I think D'Agostino was there, Rob Hatch, Kempt, maybe Jon Skelton. Jon Wanago was a nose tackle. We had a running back named Mark Reinhart, a kid from Michigan who played a couple of years in the secondary before Earle wisely moved him to running back. He was the fastest running back I ever saw at MSU. He blew a knee against Boise State halfway through the season or he'd be well up in the single season rushing record book. I recall him running a punt back about 60 yards against EWU one night in the rain in Spokane. Everyone from Eastern had an angle and shot at him and he just out ran the whole field. He ran a kickoff back against someone for a touchdown and his speed was stunning.
Funny how stuff like that comes back....and I can't remember what I had for breakfast!!??!!

Yes, it's good for the kids when they find out they don't have to be in awe around anybody. When you look at our roster, how many of our kids were offered D1s or transferred from D1s? Pretty impressive to me. Can't wait, but there's now a very real chance I'm not going to be able to go to Stillwater  I really like our chances, especially given it's the first game of the year.

It will be fun to watch Spurrier go downhill even faster now while he coaches at USC east (South Carolina)

I wish he hadn't gone to Carolina but with the kids Holtz left I suspect he'll give Richt fits this year. And to think I got married in Aiken...no wonder I have a hard time with all Carolina teams except Furman
