Signing period comes to an end.

Post by mslacat » Sat May 22, 2004 6:05 pm

The spring signing period ended last week with MSU signing 6 or 7 players total this year, Al Beye, C (6-11, 210, Jr, Dakar, Senegal-Eastern Oklahoma JC) Ryan Holmes, G (6-1, 185, Fr, Phoenix, AZ-Millenium) Ja'Ron Jefferson, G (6-1, 180, Jr, -Rose State JC) Branden Miller, G (6-1, 185, Jr, Milwaukee, WI-Colby CC), Marvin Moss, F (6-6, 230, Jr, Baltimore, MD-West Hills JC) Taylor Pratt, F (6-7, 200, Jr, Tulsa, OK-Northeastern Oklahoma JC/Will Rogers), with the possible 7th recruit being current (for lack of a better term) Bobcat 6-8 forward center PJ Owsley. With 6 scholarship returnies Brown, Dissley, Durr, Johnson, Towsley, and Woodall that should do us for this year. We can still sign an athlete to a letter of intent when/if it becomes final that Owsley has transfered, but that letter of intent will be non-binding for both parties. I still have not heard difinatively from any semi official source that he is gone but I did hear a few weeks back that "It was not a done deal", but given what I have heard here and else where I would not get my hopes up to high that he will return. With that scholarship we should be recruiting 3 players next year and I would expect that to rise by one at least, with the number of JC we signed this year I would not be surprised if one decided (or Durham decides for him) not to return, plus It will always be a year to year situation with Martrell Johnson.

One question for those of you with insight into the Owsley situation, is this a situation that could see Owsley resigning with the Cats after attending a JC or is this a situation that has more to due with his relationship with Durham?

I know that before the repeal of the 5/8, we were trying to get this guy to pay for his first year, and then we'd give him a schollie....this still may be the case, and he probably being treated as a walk-on...hense the lack of press.

I'm sure Bob Durham will get the most out of him!

I talked to P.J. earlier this week and he is in AZ right now and he said that he has signed with Salt Lake CC for next season. I asked him about returning to MSU in the future and he said it was a possibility after a year at SLCC.

I just talked to PJ the other day and he is living in phoenix arizona now. He went through utah and talked to the coaches at some of the JC schools. He is also looking at some places in arizona. He talked to coach Durham before he left and for what i know coach knows he is not coming back. I do not know why he has not reported it yet. PJ leaving did not have anything to do with coach Durham.

The big transfer is in town. He gets up-and-down real well and has good hands. Big wing span, so he should be a good defensive player.

I'm pretty sure you were referring to Beye. I had the chance to play with him last week and I was pleasantly suprised. I wasn't expecting much offensively, but Al runs real well, can hit outside jumpers, and has good touch around the basket. He does have a huge wing span and should be able to block or alter a lot of shots. Aside from his ability he will be a huge fan favorite the next few years.

yeah, it's Beye. The guy from Senegal, is it? He may not be a big scoring threat, but he will block shots. His arm length makes him more like a 7-2 guy.
