MSU's last home track meet of the season. Jim Steacy of Lethbridge has thrown the hammer 232'. Don't miss this at 6 PM. Bring rain gear.

Thanks. What a meet! It was unscored, mostly cats and griz with some unnattached. Among the unnattached was current USATF indoor mile champion Scott McGowan, formerly of UM. He ran a 1:52 800 and then paced MSU's Casey Jermyn for a bid at regionals in the 5000. McGowan dropped out and Casey gave it his all in the wind, but fell short, probably due to the wind.

It was supposed to rain but it turned out perfect except for the wind, which wasn't that strong but enough to make lap races difficult. It didn't keep freshman Dan Johnson from getting a personal record (PR) in the 400 of 48.19 to win the event. Dan is from Livingston where he played golf every spring until his senior year.

Former MSU All-American Lyle Weese won the 1500. John Voegel won the long jump and triple jump for MSU. Brad Benjamin won the high jump with a 6' 8" PR. Thomas Seeley improved his outdoor best in the vault to 15' 7", which may put him in a tie for the best in the BSC outdoors. Lindsey Burrington won the 400 hurdles with 1:02.53, a great time in the wind. Freshman Adriana Friezen won the 100 hurdles with 14.61. Cassie Nollmeyer won both the long and triple jumps, and Erin Jones and Meg Bucy both qualified for the BSC Championships in the triple jump. Freshman Ellie Rudy won the vault with 12' 7.25" which should lead the BSC. Rudy fought back from a severe hand injury in January, which took courage.

Originally a throwers meet named after Olympic hammer thrower Tom Gage of Billings, the meet is still a big meet for MSU's throwers. With lighter weights in the weight room, finals over, better weather, and good officiating, we always seem to explode in this meet. This may be why Lethbridge University likes to bring some throwers down, including the best collegiate hammer thrower in Canada, Jim Steacy. Steacy wiped out the field record with a 232' 8" throw. This would win our NCAA's in just about any year. He was incredible.

Our throwers also had a big day. Sophomore Ashley Jones broke the 200' barrier in the hammer, and Jen Allen's one year old record, with 202' 7". She also had a 201' throw. Her 202 should rank her in the top 12 in the NCAA. MSU's women won all of the throws. Josh Henigman threw the hammer 204' 11" which should keep him in the top 20 in the NCAA's, and he won the discus with his first 180' throw. He had two over the line, with the longest at 180' 10" to rank him #2 all time for MSU. But the wind wasn't good for a right hander. With another year to improve, Josh's potential suggests 200', which has only been done by three throwers from the BSC. Sophomore Jesse Allen won the shot with 57' 2", to move to #4 all-time for MSU. Brad Sherer improved his hammer to 195' 6", #6 all time for MSU. Leif Arthun had the second best javelin throw of his career at 217' 1", and Joel Walthall set a PR of 208' 7" to become the tenth Bobcat thrower to qualify for Regionals in Norman, OK. UM's Dane Brubaker won the javelin with 223' 1".

The Gage meet is a different kind of college track and field meet. In this case, it was not about score, but just a celebration of skills from both collegiate and non-collegiate athletes. Not everyone from MSU got what they wanted, but the majority left satisfied, and ready for conference.

Our men have a good chance to win, but WSU, NAU, and ISU are close in ability. On paper, WSU's women appear to be in control, with MSU fighting for 2nd or 3rd. We will represent MSU well. I remind our throwers that we are the Fighting Bobcats, not just Bobcats.
