After 21 events it looks like the men will easily take 1st place and the women will take third. Very impressive. Congradulations!

Bobcats are the Champs!
Men win their first Big Sky title ever! That's just awesome. With tennis it's been a pretty darn good spring for MSU Athletics.
Women got third-not too shabby either.

super impressive by the Cat men's team. They dod not just win their first ever Track title, they blew everyone else out of the stadium. Congratulations to these guys and the coaches and thanks for representing MSU so well.
Congrats to the women's team also. A few breaks and it sounds as if we might have won both titles!
It sure looks like the future is bright in track and field for both men and women. I think our coaches do a great job at MSU with the track teams. Thanks again for making MSU alumni and fans proud!

Great Job by both mens and womens teams, that must have been one exciting track meet. I also noticed all of the underclassmen and women on the track teams. Bobcat athletics is in for a huge year in 2005-2006, the football, mens b-ball, volleyball, mens and womens track, and tennis teams should be excellent, and I am sure the other teams left out will also compete at a high level. The athletic program at MSU is in great shape, will the mens track championship put us on top for the all-sports trophy?

It was a milestone weekend for our program. It really helped that we had lots of parents and fans there. It felt and sounded like a home meet, very emotional. Everyone gave 100%. The team joins men's tennis on a firetruck at 1 for a cruise through town. I'm pretty sure we won the all-sports trophy for men, and maybe men and women combined.

Are you saying this based upon knowledge of the Spring Academic factors or just based on the previous report that had UM ahead. They weren't very far ahead and certainly didn't help themselves any on the athletic side with 7th(men's) and 8th(women's) place finishes in outdoor Track and Field.Bleedinbluengold wrote:Unless something changes though, it looks like the bad guys will win the President's Award (even a blind squirrel....)

just repeating what I heard from a very reliable source...however, this news came before the final results of the track and field championships (but it assumed a MSU men's victory in Flagstaff). It also accounted for the GPAs of student athletes through spring semester.
It appeared that it would be nearly impossible to unseat the frontrunner in the President's Award based on the academic results, no matter what happened in Flagstaff. Don't go betting the farm on my info, though.

UM Holds Slim Lead in Presidents Cup

The race for the 2005 Big Sky Conference Sterling Savings Presidents Cup will go down to the wire.
With just the outdoor track and field points to be awarded and spring academic factors to be weighed, The University of Montana holds a slim lead over Eastern Washington and Montana State in the standings for the Sterling Savings Presidents Cup.
The Presidents Cup is unique in collegiate athletics in that it reinforces the Big Sky Conference’s dedication to the academic side of being a student-athlete. The on-the-field points are only two of the five criteria used to determine the Sterling Savings Presidents Cup. Individual team grade point averages, graduation rates and number of all-conference performers with a grade point average about 3.0 are also used in determining the winner, which will be announced in June.
Montana State has amassed 121.5 total points in 11 sports, for an average of 11.0 per sport. Montana is averaging 10.3 points per sport, followed by Portland State at 10.2 Academic performance from the fall vaults Montana over Montana State, which is tied for second with Eastern Washington.
The Big Sky Conference also awards Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophies, which is based solely on team points awarded in conference sponsored sports.
Eastern Washington controls the women’s side with an average of 10.3 points per sport. Weber State is second at 9.7, followed by Portland State at 9.5. Eastern Washington was helped by third-place efforts in basketball and golf. Weber State placed second in basketball and tennis. Eastern Washington has never won the Women’s All-Sports Trophy. Weber State has won the award four years in a row. The Wildcats were picked by the coaches to win the outdoor track and field championship, while Eastern Washington was predicted to tie for seventh.
Montana State has all but locked up its second Men’s All-Sports Trophy in three years. The Bobcats are averaging 14.2 points per sport, while Montana is at 11.8. Montana State earned 21 points for a second-place finish in men’s basketball and 10 points for its second-place showing in indoor track and field.
Montana placed third in the men’s basketball regular-season standings. Montana hasn’t won a Men’s All-Sports Trophy since 1970-71. Montana could still overtake MSU if the Grizzlies win track and field and the Bobcats finish last.
Points are determined based on team finish in regular season Big Sky standings for soccer, volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s tennis. Points are also awarded in men’s and women’s cross country, indoor track and field and women’s golf by virtue of finish at the Big Sky Championship.
Weber State has won the two previous Sterling Savings Presidents Cup awarded.

Congratulations to all of the coaches and athletes. This is an incredible accomplishment.
Some of you may not know the hours these coaches put in (head and assistants). Many of these coaches put in at least 14 hr days, 7am to 9pm. They have as many as 20 athletes that all demand personal instruction and all have their own class schedules. Their competition season runs from December through May. (X-country- Aug. thru May)
They don't have the best expense accounts, the most favorable recruiting conditions, or the highest salaries in the Athletic Dept. But, all they do is produce Conferece title contenders and National Championship caliber individuals year in and year out. I have a pretty good inkling that it's not for the money or acclaim, but for the love of the sport, their athletes and the University.
Congratulations again to all of the coaches and athletes.
Hey Coach Carigan, does MSU have any NCAA individual or relay prospects?

NCAA final prospects, yes we have some. Jones and Henigman are both ranked #13 on the NCAA list. If they don't place in the top 5 at regionals they will likely get an at-large berth. Leif Arthun is ranked #3 in our region in the javelin, but has an elbow injury and may not be able to compete. Most of our qualifiers for regionals have a chance. The sprints and relays are so tough in our region. We'll have to get big PR's in those events to make it in.
