First -- just out of morbid curiousity, I used the same dictionary and looked up "Negro" (it's Merriam-Webster online, if you're interested). It gives a definition, but immediately before the definition of Negro, it says "sometimes offensive." Thus, the dictionary acknowledges that "negro" is an offensive term, and does not say the same about "white-bread." However, that's beside the point...mquast53000 wrote:Grizlaw if you get an unabridged dictionary you can find just about any word... You can go look up the word “Negro” and then read the definition. Now I am sure that you have heard people use this term to describe African Americans. Now through your rational this makes the term non-racist… Quoting a dictionary and people in New England isn't going to sell me on your argument.
The main point here is, Quast, I'm not trying to "sell" you on any argument; I'm just giving you my own opinion. If you're offended by the term, then you're offended, and you're entitled to your opinion -- everyone has their own view of what is offensive, and nobody is wrong.
All I'm saying is that I've heard the term used, it doesn't offend me, and in the context it is generally used, it is not considered or intended to be a racist comment. The reason I cited the dictionary and the other times I've heard the term used (by white people, incidentally) is to illustrate the fact that I am not the only person on the planet who sees it the way I do. It obviously offends you, and that's fine -- like I said, I'm not telling you that you're wrong, I'm just offering my own point of view.
Of course, as you told me earlier today, I am a Griz fan and a lawyer, which means I'm inherently right about everything, yes?
