One thing teams tend to underestimate is Lulays mobility. And he has more last drive winning/tieing drives than anyone I have ever seen. He doesn't get rattled and stays cool under pressure. Lulay rushed 10 times for 66 yards last year at Col St. In fact he rushed for 371 yards last year and 8 TDs, and was sacked 21 times, a little less than 2 times a game.HanesOnU wrote:I know my personal prediction on o-state.com was 35-14 OSU. Most of the times in the first game of the year, the offense is a little behind the defenses. So I think it will be very low scoring till after halftime.CelticCat wrote:I was looking around on their message board, and they are having a contest to guess what the margin of victory will be each game. No one has us scoring more than 17 points that posted the score. I bet we can put up more than that, what do you guys think.
Also the reason I picked that was because of OSU's Dline. We got XLK(Xavier-Lawson Kennedy) and Nathan Peterson who is amazing. Nathan Peterson was injured less than half way through the season last year but was still the leading sack guy. I just see the OSU Dline giving you guys some trouble.
Now with that said, if the D-line isn't strong in the game, I can see Montana State putting close to 30 points up on us because of the weak secondary.
Either way, hopefully it will be an interesting game!
He also has a strong arm, just not the most accurate at times.
My biggest worry is the Cats are traditionally a very slow starting team. It usually takes us 3-4 games to even see who is starting everywhere, let alone start playing as a team. It's almost like we use OOC games as preseason, which I don't think any team that wants a shot at a NC should do. Last year we started out with the receivers having a bad case of stone hands, and no starting RB was named until the... 3rd game? Maybe 4th. But we return out starting RB, our leading receiver (who missed that CSU game), and all of our OL. Our offense SHOULD gel right away for once, and if they do, watch out. We were up 53-0 vs Northern Arizona last year at halftime.

I kinda like the fact that your QB is moble if that is true. We have struggled in the past with moble QBs, so it should be a test...CelticCat wrote:One thing teams tend to underestimate is Lulays mobility. O, and we were up on Texas 35-7 with less than a minute left before halftime.

I can guarentee that the cats are going to put up more then 17 points. I don't know when OSU became the perenial powerhouse, soon to be national champions with a brick wall defense because last i checked and read on this site and others, they were a fairly young, untested "rebuilding" type team this year. While some of their defensive players have put up impressive numbers, there are still lots of questions on defense just like another team i know. i'm thinking the cats are going to give OSU a better game then some of those fans down in oklahoma are thinking![]()
Last two seasons, MSU played two D1 teams. You scored 10 against Wyoming and 14 against Colorado State. Both were late scores, or they would have been more like 39-7.
You scored 14 points against a 4-7 Colorado State team. A team that gave up 30 points per game.
Wyoming went 4-8 the year you scored 10 points on them. That year they also allowed 30 points per game on defense. Funny thing is, we played them the very next weekend and won 48-24.
So... you now face a team that is coming off three straight bowl games. A team that is in the toughest division in college football (Big XII South) and a team that were seconds away from beating a #2 ranked OU team.
OSU returns much of the offense and defense. We return our top quarterback, receiver, much of the line. We have a STOUT defensive line and are changing so we can use our very talented LBers. The only question mark is defensive backfield, because our leader passed away this summer (Vernon Grant).
We allowed 24 points last year and went up agianst offenses the likes of Oklahoma (35 ppg), Texas (35 ppg), Texas Tech (36 ppg), UCLA (30 ppg), and Tulsa (29 ppg). Very good teams that put up HUGE numbers in games last year... UT hit 65, Tech hit 70, OU hit 63, Colorado hit 52, KU hit 63, and these aren't including the many 50 point games other foes had.
So, no... we aren't a powerhouse, but we are a major force in ANY game against ANY team on ANY weekend.
The past five years against D1AA teams, we have given up a total of 13 combined points. That's an average of 3.2 points allowed against D1AA teams.
Not ripping on you guys at all, but this is a much different level of football.

Like I said, we usually start off slow. Both games you mentioned were within our "preseason" mentality. The problem is, we have some man IA dropdowns and JC transfers there is no real time to build consistency. Lulay has had different receivers EVERY year he has been QB. This year will be the first time he has had his top 2 receivers back after last season.Ryno wrote:Couple of things to point out...coachouert wrote:

Like I said, if we gel FOR ONCE right away, we'll put up at least 20. If we fall into traditional Cat slow start, we'll only score maybe 10.

I completely understand that it is different levels of football and that OSU has played in three straight bowl games which is a pretty impressive feat considering the level of competition in IA. While we have struggled the last two years with mediocre (at best) IA teams, I am more hopeful that this year will be a little different when it comes to offense firing out of the gate. Like you said, your defensive backfield is a question and if Lulay can start clicking with his receivers starting early, it could be an interesting game. The cats should by no stretch be favored, but I'm thinking that with a fire lit under their butts right away, the cats will make it closer then everyone thinks. Just a side note, what teams has OSU schedules in the past from DIAA? Just getting an idea of who all the pokes have been playin aside from little teams like the sooners or longhorns
also a side note, pretty impressed with O-state.com. it's a really impressive site and thanks for putting it up for us all to see.

Thank you for the site comments. I've worked very hard to create the very best free OSU site on the internet. It's good that us 'indy' sites stick together because it's not easy going up against the Rivals and Scouts of the world.coachouert wrote:I completely understand that it is different levels of football and that OSU has played in three straight bowl games which is a pretty impressive feat considering the level of competition in IA. While our defensive backfield is questionable, they are talented and three starters are seniors. It would have been four starting seniors, but the passing of Grant will put a talents Sophmore in his place.
One example of our question marks is Daniel McLemore. DMac is a small, but speedy, back. He stands at only 5'7, 160 pounds, but is a blazer. In the spring games, he returned 5 or 6 kickoffs for touchdowns. Almost untouchable. Has like 4.2 speed.
What is good is our guys coming in. TJ Bell (Tatum Bell's brother, former OSU RB and now Denver Bronco), Ricky Price (top 70 CB), Jacob Lacey (3 star DB), Quinton Moore (top 30 CB), and Andre Sexton (top 40 S).
Who will be playing and who will redshirt will depend on how those guys are doing.
The past D1AA teams we've faced... SMS Bears (Now Missouri State), Northern Iowa, Northwestern State, and SW Texas State.

Can't argue with anything you said. I just hope we play well, have fun, and don't suffer major injuries. No doubt your depth will wear us down and if it's hot and humid it'll definitley take a toll on us, we're simply not used to that kind of weather. I went down to watch the Cats play the Gators several years ago and the humidity was brutal (and I was in the stands).
Thanks for stopping by- keep in touch.

Hot and Humid is the Oklahoma way! It's not as bad as New Orleans, but it gets terrible here. Heat index last week was 112 in Tulsa.
Right now it's 94 in Stillwater with 31% humidity.

Hey, Bobcat Fans,
Don't miss The Strip, Eskimo Joe's, or Tumbleweed for pregame and postgame food and refreshments. Stillwater's a great place to come for tailgating (you're gonna get invited for a LOT of food and fun) and a great campus atmosphere. Don't mind the construction! Hope you guys making the trip have a great time!

Eiskmo Joe's
This is an EWU fan that used to live in South Central Kansas and made several trips to Stillwater. It is a must that all Bobcat fans go to Eskimo Joe's for food and drink. It is a place that will definitely wet your appetite as well as meeting some of the good people of Oklahoma. I would encourage you to have your Bobcat Nation get together there. It is a must to get some of their clothing as well. I was kind of surprised that this was not mentioned earlier by OSU fans but they probably don't know just how popular this place is to outsiders. I just want you Bobcat fans to enjoy you visit to Oky land. Remember to drop the line ya'all while your there. I hope that you guys have a good showing and battle those pokes to the very end. I will be in San Jose, CA watching the Eagles beat the DI-A Spartans. Best of luck. Go Eagles!!!
