After the CP game, everyone was b!tch!ng about the inability to pick up the blitz. Against NDSU, there were a lot of swing passes, (many were bad throws or drops) passes underneath, and other quick passes that slowed down the pass rush.
The CP game was more about Chris Gocong (would expect him to be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round) and bad snaps killing drives early, thus leading to us getting behind.
On the NDSU game, I didn't see a big pass rush that had to be slowed down. Lulay had time. I went to the Bison Fan site and read their game day log (interesting). Several of their guys were talking about Lulay having to much time, just standing back there. The NDSU defense was just in a deep zone and drop, giving up the short passes and draws. I think Lulay said as much in an interview. He just took what they gave him.

Ouch. Friggin injuries...

These injuries are starting to make me nervous. As Kramer stated in the pre-season, our ability to run the ball will be crucial in tough games in order to keep our D (Which can't really afford to get much thinner) off the field. Otherwise we end up in the situation we had last year against Eastern... Hopefully Groves, JD, Gathing, or Taito steps up and answers the call...
Great time to be a BOBCAT!

I am terribly sorry to hear about Bass' injury and wish him a speedy recovery, I was really hoping for great things from him which I'm sure would have occured if not for the injury, and hope he can medical redshirt, although I fear he already has. That being said I am much more concerned about our Defensive injuries. We are getting awfull thin awful quick.
The devil made me do it the first time... the second time I done it on my own.

That's terrible news. I always hate to see a kid get injured, I hear that Bass is a really great kid. But I have to say that I am excited to see what Taito and Groves can do. I was talking to Evin's dad during summer break, and he said that Evin loves to be the center of attention. That's why he came to a "smaller school" in a "small town." According to Evin's dad, Evin is at his best when he is in the spotlight. Hopefully that's the cast.
How many season ending injuries to starters is that?
Wolf, Mataikis, Bass, Mollohan, Kolone (??)...Plus Cogley, and we have yet to see Eddie Smith or Chris Davis because of injuries. Am I missing anyone else? I'm not going to count Morris Milton who was a junior last year and went out with a career ending shoulder injury.
I assume that Lowe will be back soon, and hopefully at full strength after the bye week. If Kolone just had surgery, that may mean he's out for the year. WOW...what is our deal?
Our crowd needs to be extra loud, and become the twelfth man, to help out our tired defensive lineman and backers this weekend. No one is allowed to talk for the rest of the week, you need to save your voice for saturday.

It's a violent sport. It is the exception for a multi-year starter to end his career without some life long pain and/or injury. It does give them great stories when they are old men however. You can go through the list of players and very few multi-year starters have a long string of consectative starts and those that do still havin aches and pains.
Just one of those things about football.

I think that all we need to do is make a clone of Lulay

There are three kinds of people in this world, those who can count, and those who can't!!!

Mike will be back in 2-3 weeks. It wasn't as bad as originally thought.

That quote makes me think of the Damn AOL comercial

.
Back on topic, I think we have enough RB's to fill the posistion this year. Right now we have 4 LB's (mollohan, lowe, ashley, elliot) out for Saturdays game. Gathing switched to LB, am I not mistaken? I think the need is worse at that position than it is at the RB position. My $0.02 worth.

Why are we moving a line backer when we have two out this weekend. We have Groves and Taito that can give Domineck a breather. It they are not ready as redshirt freshman, what have they been working on. Maybe Kramer is just motivating them, Last week we heard all week long that Verlanic would not start, he did and had a respectable game. I guess we will see on game day.

Possibly Justin was not one of the key LBs in depth. that there were two or three in front of him that would go in, so going to RB was reasonable? It is important to understand that Kramer does not like to rely on underclassmen. Redshirt Freshmen know they know everything. When they are Sophs, they then know how much they didn't know.
On Verlanic, I think that decision was made when Birkeland could not go (which was a late in the week decision). They then had to decide what the best solution was. Move Bolton to center, and shift Gs and Ts around with someone coming in at that spot or have Verlanic move in. NDSU was a team with SLOW Lazy DTs and they did not blitz much up the middle with their LBs. They did almost ALL their blitzing and stunts with the outside LBs and DEs. They used their DTs to stop the run (which they do well). Thus the center job wasn't as complex as it might have been against OSU or Cal Poly. Also being uncovered, the weight disadvantage that Jim has (only 240s) is not as much of a problem. Velanic did a great job.
Now, it looks like with Brent back, Bolton will shift over to center and the original five OL will be back at it. (But the coaches now know Verlanic can add to the mix).
