Defense..
Montana State has forced only 13 opponent punts in the last five games, including just two last weekend at Portland State
......from the MSU page. I would bet that this changes over the course of the rest of the season as we hit the home stretch.

Your right! I bet EWU does not punt at all in our game with them.

That will help of course. But, to live on the road and survive with a defensive stop occassionally (none in last weeks 2nd half), someone has to step up.94VegasCat wrote:Hopefully a little home crowd incentive will get the defense some extra uuummph!!
Is it only at home that our defense can get motivated to play tough?
We will win all home games and lose every away game. Good bye playoffs/wins.
Somehow the defense has to shake itself by the scruff of the neck and play like they mean it. It ain't THAT hard. It's heart. Defense has always been heart. These guys have to find that on the road from here on out.
Why are we talking about them needing to "tackle better". Tackling is a matter of making a statement. If it's Hilliard or Rubin running your way-- bust 'em. Trust me, that is what they WILL do to you. I saw lots of arms and shoulders last weekend, and not alot of hits like Mac's on Rubin in the 2nd qtr. We need more of that!

True Enough Lion. Positioning being an "assumed" from good coaching and team leadership.BobcatLionFan wrote:Defense is first being in the right position as a team, each and every player in a team concept.
Once that is accomplished, then it is wanting it with a little nastyness.
My point on attitude contains "gang tackling". A defense that WANTS it-- gang tackles and leadership calls it out in the huddle if it ain't happening.
What I am saying is that home crowds do ignite fire in the defense far more than the offense. Why do they respond at home? Fire. The D has to rub sticks together and make fire everyweekend. Maybe more so on the road than at home.

Your right! That's why we need 3000 fans at EWU in 3 weeks. Our defense plays much better when the 12th man shows up.catsrback76 wrote:True Enough Lion. I agree! Cheer, chant, yell, and scream on defensive no matter how bad the previous play was!iaafan wrote:Chant "Defense" on every down no matter how bad the previous play was.Catz Rock wrote:Your right! Can’t wait for the real live thing again next week!

That is true when you are in the position to tackle. The action of tackling is 10% technique and 90% desire.raincat wrote:"Tackling is 10% technique and 90% desire."
Sonny Lubick (and probably thousands of others)
But the references above are about getting into that position and filling the right gaps and spots. all the desire in the world will not help you tackle a running back one or two gaps over when you are out of position and there is now a big old hog between you and the runner.

True enough Lion. I did not see lots of misalignment on Saturday but I did see tentativeness at the point of attack. Playing on your heels leads to getting chipped by the O Line.BobcatLionFan wrote:That is true when you are in the position to tackle. When a back gets a chip he has 5 yards or more because he can hit the hole with a full head of steam.
The 3-4 requires the D Line to hold the line and the LB's to make reads and fill gaps aggressively. Tackling is pursuit and passion. We've all commented on that.
I think we have enough experience with this D to make it work-- and we have at times enough passion. BUT, the thing I have seen is that if we just "play defense" we give up big chunks of yardage. We need to lean forward with into it.
