Cats had a couple times get 8 yards on 1st, then get a penalty so 2nd and 7. I think they threw every time. It seemed could try to run on 2nd. If get 4 or 5 it's 3rd and short. That is what surprised me since we ran pretty well when we did try.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 2:37 pmAlmost every single time they ran successfully in the 2nd half they ended up getting a false start afterwards. It’s not that they didn’t want to run the ball, it’s more that they kept on moving themselves out of run situations, and the passing game had worked very well in the first half so they assumed it would keep on going. It took a bit, but they did adjust to the blitz game.2015cat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 1:54 pmThen keep calling what was working in the first half. Not to the point where you are calling the same thing over and over. But keep building upon the run game in the 2nd half, it seemed to me he went away from it for the most part. Was me saying leave him in Tennessee based too much on emotion? Yes it was. But there have been many times this year where I haven’t been thrilled with the play calls and getting too pass happy at times.
Well we won.

This. Sterbick was handcuffed in second and third and long the whole damn half. People on this board trying to say we were so vastly outcoached because Illinois state made a run, but refuse to put anything on the guys who were committing the penalties, slay me. Go ask ndsu if those guys can come back late in a game. Good lord.tetoncat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 7:58 pmCats had a couple times get 8 yards on 1st, then get a penalty so 2nd and 7. Rewatched the game tonight. Penalties inexcusable. I will never understand why Sterbick and Vigen abandon the run. I will never understand why we have our LBs matched up vs WRs rather than a nickel. Great win. Go Cats!

Because if you’re playing a 4-2-5 with your safeties in 2 high if they go 4 WR, you’re going to have a LB & NB matched up with a WR.

Yuuuuuuup. The 2-high was a killer. You’re basically playing 11 on 9 for the first 15 yards past the LOS. I understand not wanting to get beat deep, but that really opens up your non-coverage guys (especially LBs) to unfavorable matchups down low.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 9:17 pmBecause if you’re playing a 4-2-5 with your safeties in 2 high if they go 4 WR, you’re going to have a LB & NB matched up with a WR.

Yup. Going forward I’d like to see some flexibility in changing the scheme in that regard when you face an OL you’re not getting pressure on. But, we won, so I’m not complaining!Carolina Bobcat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 9:22 pmYuuuuuuup. The 2-high was a killer. You’re basically playing 11 on 9 for the first 15 yards past the LOS. Re: Well we won.
But why? If 2nd and 7 or 8 after a penalty and you get 5 or 6 on next play running you are 3rd and 2 or 3. Might bust one. If get stopped it is no worse than an incompletion. Especially when Lamson struggled for those 2 or 3 possessions.GoldstoneCat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 10:36 pmThey abandoned the run because they had to chase the penalty yards.
It worked, happy we won. Just curious more than anything

This thread is embarrassing. Is there anything the coaching staff can do to make some of you happy?
Which one of you has a Natty on your resume?

I don’t wanna brag, but I’ve had more than my fair share of undefeated seasons on NCAA Football.

The answer to that is no. There's nothing. We got ahead, they came back, we won, and are national champions. There's never been a better era of Bobcat football and may never be again. And we're criticizing play calling in a national championship game we WON. Odd behavior.

Re: Well we won.
The way I remember it in the second half, and I've not rewatched it so I could be wrong, but a lot of the penalties came on second and 6,7,8 so it was second and long then, or we got into first and 15, ran it into second and long and then had to throw twice.tetoncat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 11:31 pmBut why? I’m not even sure what the f’ing point of this thread is. Some of us have been waiting 41+ years for this. How do I feel? Like a million bucks.

No kidding, it's wild that MSU just won the National Championship and that the reaction of some is to gripe about referees or that the Bobcats didn't win by a larger margin.GavinDonos wrote: ↑Thu Jan 08, 2026 5:50 amI’m not even sure what the f’ing point of this thread is. Ok. Ill take the NB. Rather have Gray on a WR rather than Grebe/Taylor. Maybe Daily with his speed but still...BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 9:17 pmBecause if you’re playing a 4-2-5 with your safeties in 2 high if they go 4 WR, you’re going to have a LB & NB matched up with a WR.

There were many situations outside of the penalty negatives to run the ball or stick with it.GoldstoneCat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 10:36 pmThey abandoned the run because they had to chase the penalty yards.

Re: Well we won.
I only remember thinking one time that half, man maybe run it there, and that was Lamson getting sacked after the blocked fg. Other than that i guess I trusted they liked the matchups outside more than in the run game (rightfully so). That was a loaded front 7 and we had gotten whatever we wanted throwing the ball. But you're probably right, fans should trust their instincts honed on the couch with a coors more than the professionals who had game planned for 2 weeks and almost never lose, and who ended up leading our first champ in 41 years.KIX wrote: ↑Thu Jan 08, 2026 10:18 amThere were many situations outside of the penalty negatives to run the ball or stick with it.GoldstoneCat wrote: ↑Wed Jan 07, 2026 10:36 pmThey abandoned the run because they had to chase the penalty yards.

Great conclusion!
While registering my vehicles the assessor stated "I have had both Cat and Griz students and alums work for me and the Griz end up working under the direction of the Cats."

Re: Well we won.
So if we don't have one we shouldn't comme t on a fan thread.
There are some out of line comments here and on Game thread. But it also is okay to be thrilled with the win yet disappointed in 2nd half performance. It's also okay to discuss that.
