Halfway there.

What if they can’t even get to 11 games? I would have thought they’d have more than one FBS matchup scheduled, and at this point it feels like their FBS options are pretty limited much like FCS. Maybe they could squeeze a D-II school in?
The FCS moved to a permanent 12 game season starting this year, so SAC still needs six more games. The problem is, schools sometimes schedule their non-conference games years in advance. That Oregon game for MSU this past season was scheduled way back in 2020, five years before it was played. SAC is in big trouble scheduling games, not only for this season but for the foreseeable future as well. SAC isn't in a conference anymore, so they don't have 8 or 9 definite games already scheduled, they need to find 12. They also need to find teams willing to play them in the months of October and November when those schools are mostly playing conference opponents at that time. Playing DII schools doesn't help them get into the playoffs, especially if they play more than one. I'm just amazed how badly they screwed themselves over leaving the Big Sky before having a plan on how to proceed.

SAC may very well become the new Lincoln University, vagabonds playing mostly away games against bigger and better opponents. Recruiting is going to be tough for them in the future if they don't get an FBS invite.
If the Ivy League has taught us anything, it's that you don't need to play 12 games to make the playoffs. If Sac can get 8 games scheduled against D1 teams and run the table they will lobby hard for a playoff spot. Ideally those lobbying efforts will go as well as the others they have tried in the past 2 years.
The Ivy league is a conference with an auto bid and was a bit lucky to get an additional at large bid for the playoffs this past season. Sac State is now an FCS independent and will have to rely on only an at large bid to make the playoffs. If they can even schedule 8 games this season and beat all 8, I bet it is still find it hard for them to make the playoffs and it will hurt them a lot in recruiting. They have made a huge mess for themselves. I think even Sac State fans recognize that.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up...

Maybe they can schedule 6 more games with Notre Dame and then play each other for the independent national championship!

FCS and FBS Championship games similarities...both heavy favorites won much tougher games than most predicted. MSU needed a blocked field goal and a blocked extra point. Indiana probably doesn't win without a blocked punt for a touchdown and also got help from a missed field goal. MSU was victimized by multiple false starts. Indiana was almost undone by a false start on their last drive. MSU converted a 4th down play in OT. Indiana converted on a couple of 4th downs late in the game. MSU and Indiana had the most fans in their respective games.

It's hard to win championship games-even when you're the heavy favorites.

It is hard to win nattys. But Indiana was favored by 7.5 and won by 6. Pretty close.

I've been very vocal about this subject and couldn't agree more. Montana players are the perfect case study. 247Sports doesn't do diddly squat with Montana players for years and none of them even get two or three stars unless you're like Will Dissly. However, the only reason guys like Will get listed in the first place is because they receive an offer from a FBS school. Then suddenly they belong in the system...because of their offer. Now, Montana has more exposure so more MT players get listed but it still is based on offers and if the player attends a big football camp. You basically have to market yourself to get on the rankings or get a bunch of offers. 247 has zero clue about the Montana recruiting landscape. Troy Andersen didn't even make a list until late in the process. Oh yeah these guys also add players later after they know where they sign.

I quit doing the overall recruiting page so AFCAT can probably chime in but when I was tracking it, I'd see a pile of these kids every year who got three star rankings who technically should be shoe-ins for D1 rosters. And then they sign with like Dixie State or other DII/DIII schools (again this was several years ago as Dixie is now Utah Tech who is now FCS). These recruiting sites are just large aggregator accounts who don't really do any real scouting. They go to camps, get the player lists, and then start putting together a bunch of slop online about why the player is a 3-star recruit. And its only really because the player decided to pay and go to that camp. Could they actually be good? Sure! But like Nick said, start with who puts together the lists.

And yes guys I am also an aggregator of Montana high school recruits...but I at least try to layer in some insight into how the players will develop at the next level and provide an honest ranking.

I’m no expert in recruiting, but I agree with what you wrote. I’ll only add the stars after a recruit signs and that’s if they are easy to find, like if the recruit lists them on their page. I don’t go to those sights looking for the star rankings anymore.

Does anyone have a link to the ESPN top ten list from January 5th? I’ve searched YouTube and tried the Googler but I can find it.
