:-k Unpaid QB Analyst?
Leon doing a little unofficial recruiting/interviewing for MSU's next head coach when Vigen gets his offer he can't refuse?
I would take a hard pass on Troy Taylor as head coach at MSU. The issues at Stanford raise some questions, but I saw him make some real head scratching decisions at Sacramento.
You might give him a hard pass, but any competent AD should at least consider a guy whose record as a head coach in the Big Sky is 23-1 with 3 conference titles in 3 seasons for a school that had done absolutely nothing in its 20+ years in the conference before he got there.
With culture problems including bullying staffers. We don't need that anywhere near this program

2 of those seasons he had Skattebo, who would turn any team in college football into a contender.

Hard. Pass.
"Culture problems" that weren't enough to get him fired...until ESPN wrote an article about it that made Stanford look bad. At which point Stanford fired him, but not for cause.

Again, not advocating for him but Leon wouldn't be doing his job right (IMO) if he didn't at least talk to Taylor if he's potentially looking for a new job in the next year or two.
One of the strongest things about Bobcat football is the culture. Why mess with that?

Taylor has really solid recruiting connections in Northern California. That was key to his success. Finding guys like Scatteboo who was overlooked at a Sacramento area high school.

Beyond the character questions though, I recall watching multiple Sac State games wondering how he had accumulated a good record. Whether it was clock management or going for it on fourth and 700, he left me scratching my head. I would have zero problems with Leon not considering him as any viable candidate.
I appreciate your opinion and it's probably not worth using up too much time discussing this in August. Watching the video posted above I was just struck by the fact that the person you see Taylor talking with at practice is not any of the coaches or players, but Leon Costello.

I’m not necessarily saying he’d be the right hire for MSU, but it’s hard to ignore what he accomplished at Sacramento State. After his departure, the Hornets dropped to 8-4 (4-4 in conference) and then 3-9 (1-7). Before his arrival, under Jody Sears, the program went 20-35 over five years, including a 2-8 (0-7) final season. Taylor clearly figured something out. Taking a program like Sac State and winning three straight conference titles in his three years coaching there is no small feat—it’s pretty impressive.

Everything I read about Taylor "bullying" staffers seemed overblown. There was never even a whimper about him being a hothead at Sac St. The few things I did see was that he would lose his temper over "little things." Show me a football coach who doesn't lose his temper......

The more that comes out in this case the more I think that this is all about 2-3 soft football staffers than anything else. I think Taylor is a helluva coach IMO

Two of his three Big Sky title teams played very easy conference schedules

I’m sure they will ultimately keep the door open for anyone individual who had a winning record in the Big Sky. However, I also would hope that they see the model NDSU has used about keeping coaching in house. I’m sure Sterbick didn’t take this job with aspirations to be the OC for long, before taking a head coach gig again.

Quarterbacks
Pretty crazy to see the stat that MSU had a different starting QB to begin the year for each season between 2016-2022. Without looking it up I think this would be:

2016 - Tyler Bruggman (Replaced by Chris Murray mid-season)
2017 - Chris Murray
2018 - Troy Andersen
2019 - Casey Bauman (Replaced by Tucker Rovig mid-season)
2021 - Matt McKay (Replaced by Tommy Mellott for playoffs)
2022 - Tommy Mellott

It's happening! Seems hard to believe we're full go full pad practice already. When I first saw that pic above, I'm thinking... why in the eff is that QB not wearing a red jersey, then realized Jordan Reed is a receiver now :) I have a feeling he is going to turn some head and make some big plays this year.

Yeah, Sterbick seems to think Reed has some potential too.

I still remember Sac St dicing up the Cats on 3rd down in 2019. That was the last home loss before the long winning streak. It felt like Sac St had an answer to everything the Cats threw at them that game. I looked it up for fun (pain). 9-13 on 3rd down that game. That QB was a stud.
