Can anybody discuss whether or not any of the other classes has any kids that can play D-I basketball? Is there anybody good enough to compete? The kid from Hellgate can play, but is there anybody else we should look at? Are there any 6'6" kids that Durham can put in the post?

Not to diminish what McGillis accomplished this year.........he was awesome at times, but Charlie Cox is not only the best basketball player on Hellgate's team, he's the best in the state. Probably one of the best point guards ever. You take Charlie off this Hellgate team and they don't win state, they might not even get there.
He not only got Jack and Morris countless wide open looks, he made both Shaffers (sp) significant contributors and in the end, a big reason they won state.

Having said all that, Charlie probably doesn't have what it takes to defend the point at the D-1 level, but he certainly has all the offense needed.

I have posted this before, but here you go, and remember this has inherent "West Side of
the State Bias" This year's seniors are rather slim year for D-1 Basketball athletes.
Coming into the year Kellen Hasquet and Jack McGillis were considered only as possible
D-1 athletes. Usually by their senior year most D-1 athletes are pretty well entrenched in
the Griz and Cats recruiting radar. McGillis through his play this year became a solid
D-1 recruit, Kellen fell maybe a little but is on the fringe of a few D-1 programs. James
Bulluck 6-6 of Billings Skyview made some noise this winter but will most likely go the
NAIA/D-2 route. No one else that I no of is getting any D-1 attention.

Next year could be the worse year that I can ever remember for Montana prospects. I
know of no one getting any attention by d-1 schools. nada, zipo.

The Sophomore class is loaded though. 6-6 Bobby Howard of Great Falls High had the
best year of any of the sophomores I saw. His mother was a former Bobcat
center/forward from the early 80's. So he has Bobcat connections. He averaged about
18 pts. and 10 rbs a game he is going to be a great one. 6-8 Edwards from Butte is
another athlete who is definitely seen as a D-1 athlete. He had an up and down year, but
when he was playing good he was awesome. 6-8 Derek Selvig (son of former griz Doug)
was injured most of the season but I am told he could be a WAC / Pac-10 caliber player
by the time he is a senior. There are also a couple guys who are being looked at as still
more possibilities for 2007. One of those is the Hurley kid from Anaconda, the son of
former Bobcat Scott Hurley.

We also have to be realistic. How many seats will get filled in the fieldhouse with a kid from Mazzola? Craft always had a kid from Bozo Rosary or within easy driving distance so all the "cousins" could come watch the Cats and hope they'd get a couple of minutes of playtime  Suppose that's why we don't recruit the HiLine or C schools anymore :P

I don't know. We've taken about half the kids that have played at Bozeman High over the last five years, and it doesn't seem to be helping our attendence any.

In all seriousness... in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter where you get your kids from. Sure, getting locals to play for the team may bring an extra few fans, but nothing that is going to dramatically impact the overall attendence. If you want to put butts in the stands, you need to put a talented and exciting team that wins games on the floor, plain and simple. Besides, I kind of like the idea of "stealing" a kid from under Krysko's nose. Don't think for a minute that Idaho State's women's coach doesn't leave without at least a little smirk every time Molly Hays drops 20 on the Lady friz (even if Selvig still gets the last laugh because they won - but, I'll bet he wishes he had Molly on his team).

Or what about the Weber coach with two Montana girls starting for her? Washington had two native girls from Montana that played in Havre and Bozo three years ago when they made a pretty good run this time of year.
Wonder what all these other coaches see in our kids (read Adam Morrison) that our schools overlook? Anyway...just wanted to see a little more traffic in here

FYI: Mick Durham has had several opportunities to commit McGillis to the 'Cats over the last few months. Not for sure if McGillis would have comitted, but the chances seemed good. I'm not saying Durham isn't still gonna try to get him, but it doesn't seem he's trying very hard as of late. Larry Krystkowiak and the Griz, however, are keying in on Jack and have made him an ultimate focus and priority after watching how he developed toward the end of the season and the rate at which he has yet to develop well into college. I guess we will see how serious Durham was/is about McGillis, but if he doesn't try to get him, All you Cat fans remember this in about 3 years when McGillis nears his ceiling of potential and is tearing up College Basketball (whichever D1 Conference that may be). An agile 6'6" and growing player that lead the State in 3pt and Freethrow %, that can flat out leap, shoot, dunk, post up, and run the floor in Montana High School ball, doesn't come along all that often.

Sometimes, don'tcha just have to recruit top-tier talent, whether, or not, you think you have a void in that particular position? Especially if that talent is in the STATE?

As much as I hope that Mick resigns, I know that he still knows way more about college hoops than I ever will. I can only trust his judgement on whether to extend an offer to McGillis, or not. HOWEVAH, if Durham doesn't make an offer, and McGillis turns out to be a fabulous D-I player, then it will just prove to me that, yet again, Durham isn't the coach to revive the Cat BB program. And, the program does need a revival.

This Thread is going to be way loooong if it keeps going for 4 more years. God forbid the kid goes to the NBA.

I officially want nothing else to do with this thread. I don't even think I've posted on it, I could be wrong, I don't remember what I said 4 years ago. Can we let it go already? =\

Back in the day the Griz coaches and Bobcat coaches both proclaimed!

"Our program will will look to recruit the top Montana high school athlete every year"

That changed about 5 years ago, with years where one school or another just did not recruit the Montana athlete from year to year. Matbe with the reduction in scholarships from 15 to 13 that forced some hard descitions but i do not agree with that at all. If it is agreed that McGillis is the top basketball player than I think it is a shame that both programs do not recruit him.

THEN don't click on it. AND for gods sake, don't post on it. BTW, this thread has been going for less than 2 months (Jan. 24). Quite a thread for only 6 weeks time. I'm sure this thread will end soon after McGillis signs a letter of intent. Unless of course, he signs with the 'Cats. Then what are you gonna do 'CelticCat'?

I haven't posted on this thread but I thought I'd better. Any thread with 10+ pages needs to have a little "meat" in it.

oooooh, now I have some new jokes. :)
