Play action is only effective if the other team FEARS or at least RESPECTS your running game. By the end of this season, it became apparent to the D-coordinators of our opponents that they could play nickle- and even dime-defense and STILL handle our running game. I really thought until the meltdown early in the 3rd quarter against EWU that our passing game had finally loosened up a defense enough that we could run effectively. But after that score early in the 3rd, our offense really went stagnant and again, it was because we were simply too one-dimensional...

Based on how effective our passing attack became in the 2nd half of this season, I'd LOVE nothing better than to see our running game improve in the off-season. Think about it: We will begin 2005 with teams worrying about Travis in the shotgun with 4 & 5 receivers, thinking that is the ONLY thing they have to stop. If we establish a viable ground game early (which will be very difficult given the absolutely BRUTAL schedule we hung ourselves with), Big Sky defenses won't have a clue what to do. I believe we could become offensively what the Griz are right now; set up to stop our running game and #14, Gatewood, Roosevelt, Guinn et al will light you up. Gear your D around stopping the air attack, and we'll run it down your throat and dominate T.O.P. Obviously, the running part is what we have to work on.

I hope JD works his tail off during this off-season. I really loved what I saw from him against Eastern. He showed me that he does have speed; what I really feel he's lacking is A) quickness, and B) the ability to break tackles. I'm not sure there's much he can do about A, but I think B can improve with some hard work. I really hope he paid attention to the Justin Green situation in Missoula; the guy goes from Newcomer of the Year to Biggest Disappointment of the Year in one season, only because he obviously had no off-season discipline...

One of his probelms is pad level. I'm not sure if he can change his running style to get lower so that he can break tackles like Hilliard. If he could...I think he could be just as dangerous.

Way too pointed to ever get any type of real info out of him. Basically, the question came out as "Can you tell us anything about the running back Mike Bass out of Hawaii and if he is coming here." Kramer obviously couldn't answer and said as much.

He did say they are looking for a possible transfer RB to add to the mix as well as a developed (hopefully I-A) WR that can replace Eddie and start immediately. Add to that his wish for a couple transfer D-Linemen, though here he sounded more like he wanted starter quality depth rather than absolutely wanting someone who could step in immediately and start.

Also said that he thought he had commitments from I-A RB and WR. Also thought he had comits from a JC TE and JC DL. He said that the DL was pretty familiar with the program, so I'm assuming that it is either Koffe or Laumitilla. Both guys left for LDS missions.

To those of you who visit the anygivensaturday boards you may be familiar with a poster named Rob. He is a Delaware fan and has started a I-AA recruiting website at http://www.showingblitz.com and seems to be able to get some good info on news/rumors of recruits and transfers. I posed the question of the two Bass kids from Hawaii to him and here is his response:

kmax, I found out Ray Bass has been dropped from UH's roster. Not sure if you knew that or not, but that definitely says "transfer" to me. I noticed on BobcatNation that someone said he would have four years - that's not true. He's a redshirt freshman so he would have three years left if he went to a I-AA school. Also, last year, Ray was also "definitely" transferring to either San Diego State or Colorado State, but stayed in Hawaii. Just an FYI.

Also, Ray was a WR in high school and was recruited as both a WR and DB. I heard your coach said he had commitments from a I-A RB and WR... maybe Ray is the WR.

Some interesting new information. I encourage anyone who is interested in I-AA recruiting to check his site out and participate in his boards. Could be a very cool website as the recruiting season kicks into gear.

Just trying to keep the football threads talking. It's been kind of slow on the bobcat nation last couple of days!!!!!
SO..........whats going on with the "OFFICIAL VISITS"?? Anyone know what prospects are on campus now or coming later this month?? This is a great time to see what voids coach Kramer wants to fill by which recruits are invited to MSU for a visit.
