Robcat wrote:If Kramer sticks to his plan and does not pass as much, I will be dissapointed. Gatewood, or Greatwood as Kramer was calling him last year, is a mighty fine reciever he made some great catches. And we all know that Lulay is a great passer. What a shame it would be not use all this talent. It was fun watching the passing game last season, however one dimensional that made the offense.

Now before everyone jumps on me, I am sure Kramer did not mean the passing game was going to dissapear, it just would not be 80% of the game. And yes I do want to see a much improved running game, however I have not seen any talent so far that has proven to me that the we can have a solid running game. I feel the roster is still missing that person. I had hoped that JD would step up last year and be our go to guy, but we all know how that went. Maybe this will be Justins year?
No one gives JD the credit he really deserves. He split carries for the first 4 games with Milton (he didn't even play vs Co St), though he did get the most carries. He ran for 736 yards in 10 games, was the featured back in 7 of those, and scored 9 TDs and had 4.0 YPC.

I know these aren't great statistics, but also keep in mind he probably had 200 yards taken away from penalties. Maybe not quite 200, but I saw at least 3 or 4 times he had a 40+ run called back. Mix that in with the injuries we had to OL, and he has had a whole offseason to get in better condition, I don't see why he can't be a 1,000 yard back this season.

I'm not ready to competely back him, but I think he deserves some credit.

I do agree though - we need more than a 700 yard season out of a RB to make a BSC title run, unless there are 2 700 yard running backs. ;)

I probably can't add too much new stuff from Kramer last nite in Helena, but can maybe clarify a few issues.

First, it is obvious that Kramer, like all of us, loves Lulay. He said Travis is by far the best QB he has ever coached. But he then said that as a coach, he never wants to be in the position again of relying so much on one guy having to make plays to be successful. Thus, the renewed emphasis on a good running attack and a sound defense. So, yes we will still obviously pass the ball with the best QB in the conference and some great receivers. But don't expect the passing games of last year if Krames has his way. we will be much more balanced on offense.

Krames also said that winter conditioning has been going great. If the weights of the kids he was throwing out last nite are right, then it has been a good winter. I was especially impressed with the d-line weights: the 3 projected starters were all over 280 (Rogers, Matakis, and Kalome(sp?). The main backups he talked about were Papich from GTF now at 275 lbs and he made a special point of talking about BAC's friend from Winifred. He apparently walked on last year at 217 lbs and is now at 255 lbs, and Krames likes him and his work ethic. he did not mention the new JC kid at 295lbs, but did say that Macciolo will get a chance at D-end and they will see what he can do. He is real excited about Kalome's potential-said he is young, but he could really be good.

Regarding the O-line, he feels very set with the same basic starters as last year (end of season): Bolton and Hirst at tackle, Figs and Birkeland at guard, and Wolf at center. He stressed that they are now a unit and how important that is for the O-line. But then he said: That does not mean they are our best 5 O-lineman! He then talked about Jensen who played a lot last year and is now up to 288, DeCock who he said is at 307 and is looking real good now, and finally Saucedo. He said to remember that name-now at 330 lbs and he is going to be quite the player. He also said Beniger has had a great winter and that some of their other young lineman have great potential. He says spring ball is important for all of these guys to push for playing time. I left feeling REALLY good about our O-line and depth there for the first time since Kramer came to MSU.

You could also tell Mike was really embarassed about the way our defense ended up last year. He said that is not MSU football and not what he is known for either. He said that will not happen again-lets hope he is right. I do think we look real good right now on paper at every position, but I really don't know about our depth which is still an unknown.

It was interesting that Kramer did not tallk much at all about the redshirt freshmen and what potential we had there. he just said that now is the time for them to start showing what they could do and really admitted that he just does not know for sure until they are on the field and show what they have. he said: As do all coaches, we have to recruit based on height, weight, and speed. But once they are here, we play kids based on heart. So it will be interesting to see which of the young kids start rising to the top.

Kramer has 4 scholarships still available. As someone else noted, he hopes to sign a 1A dropdown by May (presumably Bass) and is also looking for another D-end, DB, and one other position that I just can't remember. He also said he did not expect any true freshmen to play this year. The only true freshmen to play in the last couple years were both tight ends-Goodman two years ago (who was probably just that good he needed to play) and Barnhardt last year mostly out of necessity. But he said Barnhardt is going to be good and the experience last year will help him and he feels all of the young TEs now have great potential. All are at least 6'3" to 6'5" tall and the lightest one is at 237 lbs. It will be interesting to see who starts in Kramer's two TE offense next year!

P.S. WBTFG and suckitgriz: Look me up if you are going to GTF or will be in Boz for the spring scrimmages. I have a great story for you!

It wouldn't have anything to do with UM recruiting would it?

This year will be interesting to see which positions are our most integral in our team's success. Personally, besides quarterback, I believe that the best two spots on the team are the OL and the LB corps.

From what we saw last year, the OL was good and could be great. I would personally move Birkeland to the center and keep Bolton as a guard. Peder Jensen is a good tackle and pass blocks better than Bolton does at the tackle position. Bolton is our best run blocker, IMO, and he can still do that from the guard position, but he isn't very quick to get back and protect Lulay from the outside pass rusher. My ideal OL would be Hirst, Figueroa, Birkeland, Bolton, and Jensen from left to right. Wolf is great to have as a backup to fill in at center in case any of the three middle guys get injured.

Our linebacking corps is solid. I really like what I saw from Epi King last year. He showed that he is quick and can be a good playmaker. With King and Lowe at the OLB spots and Mollohan and Marudas in the middle, I think they could be great. It really does depend on how well Rogers, Matakis and Kolone do, but with the size of those guys and the motor on Rogers, it could be really fun to watch.

Remember, the defense this year could be top of the BSC again and if Eddie Smith, Kahaim Hunter, and the transfer from New Mexico (Kris Davis?) stay healthy, our pass coverage should be much improved over last year. We have dependable safeties in Force and Grenfell. If Fuller is moved to safety, we have yet another guy there for depth.

As excited as everyone is to see Lulay and Co., I believe it will be the defense this year that will carry this team to a Big Sky Championship.

Regarding HelenaCat's post, it was stated that no true freshman would see playing time? I though when we signed Hoffenbacker it was said that he could fight for playing time right away? Maybe we're deep enough that it won't be necessary. Imagine that guy after a red-shirt year…

Is it because he's not needed or grades. ?? on his grades was always an issue. Just wondering here....

Since he's still in high school, I doubt his grades are much of a factor in whether he redshirts or not. Could be wrong though. I just know there was an article in the Cronical (I think) that said he "Could possibly start on the D line as a true Freshman". Might have been before we picked up Kolone...

I think his grades are okay to get him into school, but I think the coaches want to give Brandon ample time to acclimate himself to the college life and the new stresses it brings, so that his grades never become an issue down the road. I think this is a great decision, and I hope Brandon takes the opportunity to apply himself in the classroom as well as the weight room. The coaches are very confident that Brandon will end up becoming one of the all-time great Bobcat defensive linemen.

With the advent of the new academic standards where each school is given a rating of whether their athletes have made progress toward graduation it has become very important that athletes stay eligible, and that we retain them...even if they transfer to another school we are hurt by them leaving. (e.g. Jason Goodman counts against us even though he may be successful at another school).

That is another reason Kramer said that he must be very careful when picking up athletes in the future. We will lose scholarships if we drop below the standard score for retention. We are now right at the standard line. As soon as the rule regarding track athletes who compete in indoor and outdoor track is straightened out, we will rise above the line more comfortably. In a school such as MSU where academics are harder generally the formula really makes us wary of the marginal student athlete.

Kramer said that Hoffenbacker needs to get some academic things straight before he will play a lot of football. This is most likely a redshirt year. He won't help anyone, especially himself if he's not eligible.

I hear Kramed told a story about how you never know how things are going to work out with recruits and specifically mentioned the tight end position where Wolf (walk-on) ended up being an All American after he tried to sign two big name guys, who both ended up going to UM, but played very little (presumably one was Molloy) and Goodman (who ended up leaving), but it was Wolf (a walk-on) that ends up being the star of the bunch. Apparently it kind of put things into perspective surrounding recruiting day. Did I mention Wolf was a walk-on?

Any word on practice today?

-I have heard rumors that Hoff has "who cares" attitude towards school. That was his big turn off to the Pac 10 schools. He obviously has raw strength and great size that have come naturally. I don't know how hard he has ever had to work.

Hopefully he will get a great school and football work ethic instilled by the end of his 1st semester.

All I know is, the defense WILL be improved over last year's debaucle. I might have mentioned this before, but on the post-game show after the loss to the frizz last season, Kramer specifically stated that the defense he was running in that game was much different than the one he started the year out with. He said that they didn't even run a single down using the "old" defense, because of our injury-plagued D. Switching to the 3/4 should help us. I just hope it won't take the guys a season to learn it, because I for one don't want Travis' last year to end without beating the frizz, winning the Conf title, and making waves in the playoffs :D .

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

IF this kid really has an attitude problem, and it's purely hearsay at this point... Kramer will straighten him out if anybody can.

Anyone know if practice is still scheduled for 4PM today?
I'm thinking of making the drive down from Helena, and i need to know soon, in order to talk the wife into "making a Costco run"

I'm not absolutely sure. But everything so far points that Teischer certainly won't play this spring. I just don't know how serious his head injuries are and if they will affect him long term. No one seems to know much and Kramer did not say anything in Helena last Tuesday.

kramer did mention Kolone and his injury. It sounded like it could have been a serious car accident with Chris and his family. But luckily, no one was too seriously hurt. Evidently, Chris got some glass in one eye. It did not sound super serious, but I have not heard for sure if he can play this spring or not.

Maybe we need a new rule-no one leaves campus over spring break! :(
