Re: Vigen inks new four year contract
Anyone who thinks Vigen is here to stay is waaaay over their skis. This is how the game works. I would love it if Vig is here forever but am grateful that he signed a deal that will allow us some buyout $$$ after he gets hired by a P5 startup/contender when the time comes.
The ideal that the "magical Gallatin Valley" or kids are going to keep him here are folly. There is a thing called the transfer portal. Ask Deion and his sons how it works. And Bozeman really isn't all that as far as quality of life goes compared to other college towns. It's not like Coach V. goes snowboarding / trout fishing that often.
That being said, let's ride this friggin lightning bolt to the end!

Totally agree, and all along I've just been hoping for ONE more year so hopefully this means we get at least that. Although again, there is absolutely no guarantee he doesn't announce on January 7th that Oregon (or whatever bug name program) is buying out his contract and hiring him to be the new OC. (although OR might not have been the best example as I think they'll still be playing.)GavinDonos wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 1:43 pmAnyone who thinks Vigen is here to stay is waaaay over their skis. Re: Vigen inks new four year contract
I'm not optimistic Vigen will stay forever, but people have been saying the same about Mark Few for a couple of decades. Yes, I know you can't compare the difference in FCS/FBS football to a highly successful D-1 basketball program, but I sure as heck could think of better places to live than SpoCompton if the opportunity presented itself. Maybe, just maybe, the family has found their forever home in the Gallatin Valley (or at the very least until the kids finish their collegiate careers).GavinDonos wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 1:43 pmAnyone who thinks Vigen is here to stay is waaaay over their skis. I think Vigen is a far far better HC than he was offensive coordinator. I’d be shocked if any P4 team wanted him as their coordinator.

Not to say that we don't lose Vigen, and perhaps very soon. But I also think Choate and Vigen are two very different individuals. Choate is a jumper. I'm fairly certain his time at MSU was his longest coaching tenure at one school, and that was only 4 years. I often feel like he would jump ship on a program mid-season if the opportunity presented itself. Vigen, on the other hand, has only been with three different programs with long stints at each. I definitely get more of a sense of loyalty and commitment from Coach Vigen.AFCAT wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 2:28 pmYup, not relaxing until Fall camp 2025.catatac wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 1:47 pmTotally agree, and all along I've just been hoping for ONE more year so hopefully this means we get at least that. I agree! And certainly when he has a National Championship under his belt his stock will rise. But maybe he won't be satisfied with just one. Congrats to Coach Vigen! Hats off to Waded and Leon for making this happen—it’s a win-win, understanding it's a matter of time. It shows the strength of our program/university willing to invest and keep this job among the most attractive in all of FCS. Leon has a clear understanding of what's ahead.

We on BN have from fire Vigen during the New Mexico game to overjoyed at him staying. No one could possibly accuse us of being fickle.

Re: Vigen inks new four year contract
I agree on most of what you wrote, but the only real long term loyalty/commitment to a school or program comes from the fans and most of the players. The vast majority of the coaches (especially in football) these days are looking ahead to the next job and that's okay. I think history has shown us that to be true. That's not to say coaches don't care about the programs they are employed with, just that their loyalty isn't the same as ours and I understand why. Heck, Sprinkle had more connections to MSU than most head coaches would have and I thought he would coach at MSU for at least a decade, but money talks. Binford is a rare exception these days. I hope Vigen sticks around until his sons graduate, but I wouldn't bet a dime that he is still here even a year from now and I wouldn't blame him for jumping for more cash.Camo_Cat wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 3:26 pmNot to say that we don't lose Vigen, and perhaps very soon. Guys. Vigen left this contract unsigned for basically 2 weeks. Only signed it after Rodgers got the WSU job. Think logically for a bit. He wanted the Wazzu job. Most likely, they didn’t meet his fiscal or timeline demands, but regardless, he’s clearly not going to stay here for long. And that’s fine! You’re not going to get a lifer, and really, that’s probably a good thing.

This extension is still good thing for the football program and the university as a whole.

Re: Vigen inks new four year contract
I feel like Vigen knows his time is up in the fcs, but is the type of guy that will foster a transition to the next head coach, which i think will be an internal hire. He's definitely not going to Jimmy Rogers us, if he was he'd been gone when Fresno State came calling.

I see it as a win win. If someone is willing to now pay the buy out Cats win. If Coach stays Cats win. It is part of the process, an FCS coach who runs a clean program, wins, and is liked by a fan base is going to move on, just a matter of when and best fit.

Ever been to Manhattan, Kansas? It sucks. Money is one thing, but a community that has a defined core is something I’ve grown to value as I’ve gotten older. Lots of college towns don’t have that.GavinDonos wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 1:43 pmAnyone who thinks Vigen is here to stay is waaaay over their skis. This is how the game works. Bozeman has ALOT of upside compared to other larger college towns. And I don’t think the Deion example is totally fair. That’s a whole different ball of wax fueled by celebrities and NFL level connections.
Vigen is here for the moment, and I think he likes it for more than just the job.
