What song should be played then during games other than the fight song. Mony Mony is played for 1 reason.91catAlum wrote: ↑Thu Jan 08, 2026 10:42 amI agree. If I had a magic wand, I would erase that stupid chant from everyone's memories.
Unfortunately, humans are lazy creatures of habit, and that chant is ingrained in many people's brains when they hear the end of the fight song, or Mony Mony. Similar to the "bop, bop, bahhhhhhhhh" part of Sweet Caroline that everyone sings along with. Its just habit at this point, its not that they are necessarily even thinking about the grizLLies.
But I'm with you, I hope it dies out soon.

They shouldn't and if they do, if you need to talk to someone about it. Here's why:
MSU has won more national titles than UM: 4-2, if you count everything as UM does with the all-time series. Even if you don't it's 3-2 since both joined the BSC and it's even if you just count I-AA/FCS.
The Bobcats have more conference titles at 23-19, if you count everything as UM does with the all-time series. If you don't its UM by one at 19-18, which is nothing to be ashamed of.
MSU has won 17(?) national titles across various events. I believe UM has only won two. Both football.
MSU has won 57(?) individual national titles across various sports. I believe UM has just two or three.
MSU has a basketball national title, if you count everything as UM does with the all-time football series. It's 0-0 if not.
MSU has won around 10 straight Brawl of the Wild series and is something like 11-5 all-time.
UM has the all-time edge in women's basketball, but MSU has dominated for the last 10 years or so.
UM has a slight edge in the all-time men's BB series, but MSU has been very successful 3 of the last four years. (This is probably UM's best event presently).
MSU almost always finishes ahead of UM in track and field and X-country.
MSU is way ahead in rodeo.
I'm struggling to think of the ways UM is better in sports. Tennis(?). They're always good in soccer. I think they have a historic edge in volleyball.
(Additionally, MSU won the most exciting FCS title game in the history of the game. Being a Twins fan, I know that carries some weight because people still talk about the 1991 World Series as the greatest WS of all-time).

I think people are kind of talking about two different things though. Mony Mony and the chant that comes with it, and the griz living in our heads. I don't think those two are intertwined.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 08, 2026 2:43 pmThey shouldn't and if they do, if you need to talk to someone about it. Here's why:

2506 kinda nailed it I think. It's a dig at the griz and really nothing more. I can make a dig about anyone at any time; that doesn't mean they consume my thoughts. Griz fans want you to believe that ESG GCG proves that we care so much about them and keeps them relevant. That is literally the last thing they can hang their hats on. We're better than them at every turn. They hate the chant. Hence, it'll never go away.
When Alabama fans stop Dixieland Delight is when Cat fans will stop Mony Mony. In a word; Never. People need to find something more important to whine about.

Re: Why allow the gris to reside inside our heads?
For me, the biggest issue is the divide it is creating between members of our own fan base. I seen multiple instances where a Cat fan is arguing with another Cat fan about the cheer. Aren’t we all rooting for the same team? I think the people who don’t like it, just remain quiet or come up with something else to replace words. Let’s not go full stupid mode and pick a fight. The chant is gradually losing steam at games. As far as at the bar, neutral bystanders think the chant is awesome and are amazed that we despise our rival that much. Different setting for me and not necessarily anything to be concerned about.Camo_Cat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 08, 2026 12:37 pmAdd me to the (growing?) list of people that feel it needs to go away with the exception of Cat/griz week. To me, it's not an issue of "they're in our heads" or "it's not classy". I look at it more like, why should Cat fans bother to give that school/program any more attention than they actually deserve. And they deserve very little attention. They are the second-class program in Montana, academically and athletically. I went to MSU way back in the day when we use to chant "Pooooooor grizzlies" whenever we had the upper hand. Personally, I hate even having to mention them in conversation...
By all means, chant it to the mountain tops during rivalry week. But that is THE only time that program should ever be mentioned in the same breath as MSU and Bobcat football.

I don't think it factored in in Nashville at all. Honestly at games it's mostly driven by the Student Section, or more widely at Cat-Griz, where it gets the most notice. But that's also when it's most understandable and I doubt neutral fans think much of it.WYCAT wrote: ↑Thu Jan 08, 2026 12:16 pmBuzz Brainard talked about it on his radio show the next day. Griz fans can cry about it, but all you need to counter that is any of a selection of classless Bobby Hauck quotes to laugh them off with.
We've got kids being rowdy. They've got a classless DB running the whole show.

Re: Why allow the gris to reside inside our heads?
This is where I'm at as well (except to clarify that we practically never play Mony Mony outside of Cat-griz games and I think semifinal games). The general chant should definitely not go away, just be modified. I've stopped doing it at any time but I would hate to lose it.catatac wrote: ↑Thu Jan 08, 2026 2:08 pmI'm in the camp that hates it when we are playing someone else and the crowd is chanting ESG. And, I probably hate them as much as anybody. But, IT IS NEVER GOING AWAY. So... here is my idea. Keep Mony Mony alive every game, but if we're not playing the Griz, it's "Beat The Redbirds, Go Cats Go!" Then, of Course, when do ARE PLAYING them... we go all out and bust out the real version. Give it more power that way too.
P.S. I'm all for hearing it all season long at parties, weddings, reunions, etc... just not when we're in a football game not playing them.
For a while I loved the chant every time we scored in any game because it felt like there was a period where the student section wasn't invested enough in the games and specifically in Cat-griz and "practice" really built a strong student section culture that is amazing today. But at this point, while we should still do the chant every score, we should replace grizzLLies with whoever we're playing.
I don't know how to implement this as it's mostly the student section that does the chant during non-Cat-griz games. They aren't going to take any hints from us old-timers (anyone over 25). Maybe a combination of freshman orientation, pre-Gold Rush university wide messaging that doesn't seem like it's coming from the administration, general social media and get players in on it?

100% I really hate the ESGGCG chant. Never do it. It really does make us look like we are still bitter.aucat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 08, 2026 10:37 amAt the Bobcat Bash in Nashville there were 7000 of us jammed in there but I BELIEVE that I heard our emcee, the great Bobcat Flint Rasmussen, politely ask the Bobcat fans gathered to get the griz out of our heads, get it out of our system, regarding the ESG chant.
After he said that the Spirit of the West band played our fight song and by god there were no gris inside anybody's heads! No ESG chant! Just GO CATS GO!
For the most part that was the case at the NC game but not always.
But think about it. We are playing Illinois State for the damn national championship. Why would we want to display that even in THIS game
the griz reside inside our heads when we chant ESG?? It makes no sense. I DON"T CARE if we chant it when we are PLAYING THEM, but I
hate to demonstrate to other teams that we allow the gris to reside inside our heads. When we are not playing the gris I couldn't care less about them. Which is why I have never ONCE even looked at their board, Egriz or whatever it's called. I'm focused on the Bobcats.

They also had Cotton-eyed Joe that was really popular with the fan base.
Mony, Mony hits so hard though. It's just overwhelming and the TV mics pick it up. It's nuts and if I tuned into a game for the first and heard it I'd be like wow, those people are having a blast. Complaining about it won't make it go away, that just makes more people want to do it.

I'd much rather leave the Griz in it than try to adapt for every team.
Telling visiting Mercyhurst to eat sh*t seems way more low rent than a long-standing rivalry chant.
Honestly we want those teams to go out thinking Bozeman was the coolest place they ever played. That rep is recruiting gold.

I agree 100%. Leave it Griz, or get rid of it (good luck with that).RKMCMT wrote: ↑Thu Jan 08, 2026 6:02 pmI'd much rather leave the Griz in it than try to adapt for every team.
Telling visiting Mercyhurst to eat sh*t seems way more low rent than a long-standing rivalry chant.
Honestly we want those teams to go out thinking Bozeman was the coolest place they ever played. That rep is recruiting gold.

I’m the minority here, but I’m fine with it for Cat-Griz. Think it’s kind of low class to do it at every game and at all the events. We can do better.
