Bobcat Athletics
I want to see how everyone feels about this situation:
I will be talking Bobcat football and there is always a person that says "When the Cats and Griz play each other I am a Griz fan, but when the Cats are playing anyone else I am a Cats fan." This really ticks me off. I always tell them that it is a good day when the Cats win and it is a great day when the Griz lose. I hate when people won't take a stand. I have to admit I really disk like the Griz and that is because I am a Cat fan! You will never se me cheering or supporting the Griz! How does everyone else feel about this?

Agreed. The only time I'll root for the jizz is if a jizz win helps us. For example, I'll be pulling for them next weekend when the play portland state in bball.mquast53000 wrote:I want to see how everyone feels about this situation:

Most people will say that they root for the Griz when they aren't playing the 'Cats.
The way I see it... I have no problem rooting for the actual team (UM), but then I inevitably have to interact with their fans, hear their announcers, and see the things they type on their BBS, and I have a very hard time following through with my good intentions of rooting for the Griz.
It's like when the Atlanta Braves were in their heyday back in the 90's... didn't mind the team so much, but the geeks in the stands coupled with the rediculously arrogant announcers led to me rooting against them, not for.

Well the only sport I am truely passionate about, on any level, is football. I
"really like" basketball, but it'll never come close to football. So in that regard, for football terms, I can't bring myself to ever root for the Griz, unless it helps us.
But in terms of any other sports, I root for the Griz most of the time, excluding games we need them to lose, or of course Cat/Griz. But that is simply because I am not as passionate about basketball, volleyball, etc, as I am about football. For example, if the Griz made the NCAA tournament, I'd be rooting for em every step of the way.
I can usually pull for the Griz against non-Cat opponents in any sport except football. But what did they expect after beating us 16 years in a row, that we would ever want them to win anything? Griz fans can talk about how great the streak was, but they should realize that all it did was further distance Griz fans and Cat fans. It created such hatred amongst Cat fans, and Griz fans in turn because they got so arrogant, that I love seeing them lose. When you have extremely arrogant fans on one side, and extremely bitter ones on the other, tends to create some bad blood.

I am pretty much on the same page as you.
With one exception: If I personally know one of the kids playing for the griz, I will definitely root for that athlete. I can't hold it against a kid if they had a momentary lapse of judgement, and disregard for all things good and descent, when they made their place of higher learning enrollment decision.
Great example: Scott McGowan, Poplar, U of M. I've never cheered harder for any kid than when Scott was at the Olympic trials this summer. He made the finals (shown on NBC), but missed a spot on the team. I also pulled for him when he was donning the dreaded blood-stain red and faded black at the NCAA Championships.
Playoff football is another grey area. I am indifferent towards the griz when they play lower round games. However, I deffinitely root against them if thay happen to make the Final game. (C'mon does anyone really want to see any more of those crappy nat'l champ t-shirts, or listen to any more bandwagon blowhards)

During the 26 years I lived in Georgia, I received so much crap because of the Big Sky Conference in general and the "school" west of the divide, I went to Huntington, WV and Choo Choo to sit on the Fizzlie sidelines; during both games I wore my MSU clothing and for the most part was treated very nicely and had fans tell me how much they appreciated my being on their side. Of course, there were some obnoxious high school coaches that chose to badmouth some of the kids I coached or taught in Georgia I suppose simply because I coached them (I was forced to coach simply because my first principal was a former Georgia Bulldog and knew of the Montana State coaches pipeline, even though I had never played the game). I did in fact sit on the GSU sideline simply because several of my kids were playing for GSU and received some comments from my head coach for not sitting on the Furman sideline. Coach Johnson from Furman told my coach that "It's okay, he's wearing Montana State clothing and not the other schools." By the way, the coaches all have a great deal of respect for each other and treat each other much better than the fans or those that never played the game. I guess it's simply a matter of conference affiliation. When the Fizzlies went bust against James Madison this year, I must confess I felt a certain sense of relief because it served to shut their fans mouth, yet I felt a real sense of pain for the kids in Butte Centrals school colors). I keep waiting for their head coach to grow up and display the class Krysko has in his first year of coaching. I respect their school and have a tremendous amount of fun talking smack, they can't help making poor choices or not being logical.

I don't think we will have to worry too much about academic achievements...WYCAT wrote:I can't even make myself root for them when it would help us, ala when PSU comes to hippyville next week. It would make me happy if they never won another event of any kind ever - sporting event, academic achievement, whatever. The whole place sucks. PERIOD!

I wouldn't say I hate the Griz, but I don't usually pull for them unless it helps MSU. Their fan base over the 'streak' was enough to put any Bobcat fan into therapy and they just hounded you over and over and over. So yes, there is still a little bad blood there. Times are changing though however and the MSU athletics program is now in the running for the presidents trophy for the last 4 years or so. I pretty much worry about what MSU does and I think thats what our coaches should do as well. Like comparing recruits in football between schools. You can't really do that as some athletes are recruited based on style/scheme etc. as well (i.e. like Kramer usually likes fast DL kids who are STRONG and can run). UM may get a DT 300 LBS plus, but if he doesn't fit your defensive scheme as a whole, then the weight isn't as much of an issue etc. Do you want big guys that are tough early and then wear down at the end of the game (Portland State)? Or do you want a tad smaller guys that are strong/tone/good endurance that can give you good play over the ENTIRE game etc. There are issues you have look at that in recruiting etc.
Okay, got off topic, but in short, I think Cat/Griz is a very very BIG RIVALRY and you usually don't pull for your rival that much
I have mellowed some the past year (hostility) as I have met some good Griz fans on these boards and its fun talking sports/smack with them. A few years ago I would not have said that at all about Griz fans
I will also say that I think Krysko is a class act for the Griz. He is night and day 'Classy' compared to Hauck. That was a very good hire for UM and he will be good for your program.

I have been a huge Griz fan for 25 years. I am one of those people that root for the Cats when they aren't playing the Griz. I wanted the Cats to win the NC in 1984, I wanted the basketball team to beat St. John's in 1986, and I wanted them to win their playoff games in 02,03. I root against the Cats if it helps the Griz.
I've had way too many friends walk the sidewalks at Bozo U. to build up a hate for that school. Back in the day I knew some players as well.
I don't go nuts like I do at a Grizzly game, but I sincerely want them to do well. However, I will admit that the St. John's basketball game had me yelling.
I'm a Griz fan first, Montana fan second. I'll always hope for Montana schools to do well. Anyone have a problem with that?

Academic achievement????? Isn't that one of the reasons we added history to our departments (other than a futile attempt by the Duuhhh UMMM controlled board of regents to secure a job in the humanities for one of their "graduates")? An attempt to correct most of the "professional" articles they con journals into publishing? Isn't virtually every article published there quickly rebutted by a college someplace else on methodolical grounds as a minimum?

If that is truly how you feel, I respect that. But my experience with griz fans is listening to them behind our bench in missoula. They spend about 5 minutes actually watching the game and the rest of their time is spent yelling every vulgar thing you could imagine to players, coaches, trainers, injured players. All this, while sitting next to their 10 year old son. I have a lot of respect for many of the players, but I hate the fans and I especially hate Bobby "Beavis" Hauck.Cat-theotherwhitemeat wrote:I have been a huge Griz fan for 25 years. Some of my best friends as well as some of my family are UM grads and we have a lot of fun with smack talk. Speaking of family why was I the only one that saw the light? However I am a Cat fan to the core, esp football and its hard to cheer for the Griz under any circumstance. But I still have my Montana roots and there are times, and not many, I will root for the Griz.

I can understand why a Cat fan would hate/not root for the Griz. The streak could certainly bring out some hostility in any big fan. Obviously, losing year in and year out would be bad enough, but certain Griz fans (as it would be anywhere) made life hell on many Cat fans with their pompous attitude.
I also understand that what comes around goes around. The Griz football program is on top right now and have been for 10,11 years. Things could be totally different in 5-6 years so I think it's best to take success with dignity and sportsmanship. I still rib my Cat friends when I get the chance though.
