Did the CATS and griz lose any in state recruiting wars with I-A schools? If so, who went where? Where did the LB from Bozeman end up?

IMO if a Montana kid is that good, and he or she does not want to stay in state, then I'm all for them getting a chance to play in a 1-A conference.

Why should a Montana kid be anything short of being among the best football players in the country and competing as such?

Of course, a lot of people want to go to college relatively close to home (I ended up doing that so I certainly understand that desire), but more often than not, that's our fear of the unknown that puts us into that mindset... and cheaper tuition.

My theory is that first and foremost, the kid should do what he feels is best for his situation - obviously. When Goodman left to pursue his dream to play Pac-10 ball, I was a little disappointed, but have no problem with him pursuing his dream. But, if he thought he'd have a better shot at the NFL by transferring, I disagree. I still think that should he have turned out to be a standout at the 1-AA level, his NFL shot would have been better than being an average 1A player. Long story short, just because a player is good enough to play 1A, that doesn't mean that it's always the best option for them - especially if they have aspirations to play beyond college... See Fitsimmons (sp?) as another example. He probably could have started for any Pac-10 team.

Another is Carothers from Helena...played at Washington...did pretty well in the PAC 10...signed as free agent with SF...got cut. Truth is if a kid is talented, the scouts will see him no matter where he plays. I agree more scouts may see him (or notice him) if he plays in the big time.

My ONLY reason for that statement is that I'm glad the Montana schools did a good job on recruiting these instate kids. I like to see MSU and UM go after local kids. IMO some years they don't do that has hard as they could have, but that is just my opinion.

If the kid is after something other than what MSU or UM can offer or even just wants to "get away" fine. I hope they get what they are looking for and I wish them well! I'm sure this can and does happen.

However, I like to see Montana kids play for Montana schools especially if they have talent which may have landed them at larger institutions. What I don't like to see is kids go to other schools just because they "slipped through the cracks"! Good for those kids that they landed somewhere and are playing but in these cases maybe our Montana Schools didn't do such a good job at recruiting! Of course there are exceptions to every statement but generally that's how I feel.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is that I read somewhere that Wyoming didn't sign a single kid from Wyoming this year. I find it hard to believe that there isn't a kid in all of Wyoming that doesn't have D1 talent. Either that or Wyoming kids do not like their school! In either case, I would hope that wouldn't happen in Montana!

It seems that over the past few years that the top Wyoming kids usually pass over the Pokes to play at CU, CSU, or Neb. I thought that Joe would change that, but maybe Wyoming just didn't have a talented class of football players this year. Out of curiousity, did Wyoming have any high school kids that signed to play I-A/I-AA this year?

What about the kid from Kalispel who went to Nebraska? Gilliam or something like that in the early 90's, he ended up being their starting TE for 2 years.

was this close to signing to be a Bobcat basketball player then had to go out for football and got a scholarship offer from Nebraska.
