Shay WHO!?

Post by mslacat » Thu Mar 24, 2005 3:02 pm

OK after doing a fair amount of digging I am pretty sure the Big man who Peed' saw yesterday is/was Chawn Johnson from Lancaster, CA. He is listed at 6-8 to 6-9 currently. Last year he was listed at 6-6 so you wonder how much growing he has left.

In need of some more depth in the post, Iowa State is searching the California high school ranks hoping to add another spring signee for the 2005-06 season.

The Cyclones recently offered a scholarship to 6-foot-8, 235-pound Chawn Johnson of Antelope Valley (Calif.) Christian. It’s easy to see why. Johnson, one of 91 McDonald’s All-American nominees nationwide, is averaging 19.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 4.3 blocks per game.

He has made quite an impression in his first season after transferring from Antelope Valley High.

“He’s a great kid that has worked hard on his grades,” said A.V. Christian coach David Nurse. “He came to us as a senior and is very athletic. He plays center for us, but is more like a four. We do a lot of trapping and sprinting up and down the court, so he has to run. He fits in very well. He’s working very hard to be the best player he can be.”

ISU is one of several programs to express interest in Johnson. According to his coach, Nebraska, Auburn, Utah, New Mexico, Northern Colorado, San Francisco, Loyola-Marymount, and Montana State have also inquired.

But it appears as if the Cyclones are emerging as a possible favorite.

“He really likes Iowa State and is just waiting to take his trip to check them out,” said Nurse when asked if his star forward had any favorites. “Iowa State is also very interested in him and Coach Archibald has been out to see him. He’ll take an official visit once he can. They’re in the process of setting that up.”

Division I programs have been attracted to Johnson’s upside.

“We don’t get to train him enough,” Nurse said. “He’ll be in the gym numerous times early in the morning or late at night trying to improve himself. He wants to succeed and win. If he gets around some really good talent and more coaches, he could really be something. Plus, he’s only 17 years old and he’s still maturing mentally and physically.”
Now my question for Peed'. When coach Clark said he will be playing for the Cats next year was it one of those " wishful thinking on the coaches part where the recruit nervously smiles and roles there eye's" or did it actually look like we got ourseves a commitment!

Oh yea did I meantion he would be the HIGH SCHOOL big man recruit!!!

this picture looks alot like what i saw. I am 80% on that. I asked myself that question yesterday about the wishful thinking. I can't say i am sure it was not wishfull thinking but i would definately lean toward Clark saying this dead seroiusly. i may be mistaken but it also seemed like the recruit affirmed it but i was busy at the time and was not thinking about it real hard. If that kid was a high schooler and he is commiting then let me tell you guys. This HUGE!!!!

I will find out for everyone tonight or tomarrow on this. I got a person or two that I can ask.

"6-foot-8, 235-pound Chawn Johnson"

I was right on on his height and weight
A tidbit I picked up today.

Coach James Clark had a recruit with him today from CA who said he is playing for us next year. Big Black guy looked athletic and strong. He was about 6'8 and I believe he said he was JC. Maybe 230 to 250? I didn't get a name and I feel bad about that for the faithfull on here who are starving for news but that is all i got. Maybe we can narrow it down from the list of possibles. I would say he looks more of a power forward than center. Maybe someone to spell moss?

My understanding is that he has not commited, but he will make his choice early next week. He is Iowa State #1 recruit target.

Just one question although you guys clearly don't want to say everything you know here...is he seriously considering coming to MSU over Iowa State?

Truth be told I can not give you the percentage chance of us to sign him? I really have no Idea, but I hear we people in Bozeman are pretty exited about our chances. I looked over the net last night (and there is a ton of stuff on Chawn). In more than one artical it mentions that he would rather sign with a program where he could contribute early. He is also very interested in a team that was winning right now, he did not want to be part of a rebuiding project, and a program that coaching staff that would be around for his four years. There are a lot of selling points there for MSU. Iowa State vrs Montana State 9 out of 10 time we lose tthis recruiting battle, but if you don't try!!? :P

Thanks msla...I was wondering why he'd be seriously considering MSU if he's Iowa State's #1 recruit target. Now it makes more sense....let's hope Mick can get him!

Personally, I love the fact that Mick is even going after this kid. Maybe it is just me, but I have thought that in the past, Mick has refused to even try for some higher-level recruits because he thought MSU just would never have a chance at them. He always seems to try to get kids that "slide under the radar." Which is fine, but you gotta go out there and try to get some blue-chippers, too. If you go into a kid's house with the attitude that you will never get him, that's exactly what will happen. I think Mike Kramer has done an excellent job of recruiting like this, because he honestly believes that a kid coming to Montana State is a better decision than going to a I-A school somewhere. I hope Mick is picking up some of this attitude, because I feel we have a heck of a lot to offer at Montana State.

What I would love to know. Is this a Durham recruit, a Carse recruit or a Brown recruit. I have heard if we sign 6-4 forward Chaz Dykes that he is a Johnny brown recruit. Olsen was a guy that did not get the credit he deserved recruiting and I was worryed about our recruitiing when he left, and then last fall we did not sign any players there was concern. Things seem to be coming right intoshape now though! I just wish I had a clue as to who we were looking at for a JC big man

The chronicle mentioned him today, so he must be in the mix. Sounds like he would be a great get.

Or it means the Chronicle sports dept. has been reading BobcatNation again.

Another guy that ISU is recruiting is Andrew Peschong from Marshalltown, IA. I had a chance to play ball with him when I was in Iowa over spring break and let me tell you, he is a good ball player. 6'5" can handle the ball and can shoot the lights out.

if the Bozeman Daily Chronic is using a internet sports poster's sight for montana state athletics doesn't that call into question their method's of reaserch? lol.

also - welcome to Montana Chawn - you will be a welcome presence in the Montana State lockerroom! :D

Here's the way it is: MSU, ISU, UCLA and UTEP opened the door for the uncles and fathers of many, many African-American athletes, with some help from Idaho's Junior Colleges. Any kid that mistakes IDAHO State for IOWA State probably wouldn't be able to handle the academic challenges they'd be faced with in either Bozo or Poky. I recently returned from Georgia and many of my former (and future) colleagues played over and over and over (sorry Nelly and Tug's boy) tapes from our conferences blatant errors in officiating in both football and basketball. We'd better get it straight THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Data does not lie.

Found on the Net:
Allen's great week gets even better in All-Star game
This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press on Sunday, March 27, 2005.

By JOHN SANDERS
Valley Press Sports Correspondent
LONG BEACH - Highland's Tomoreo Allen said, "it's been a great week."

On Monday, Allen committed to play basketball at the Master's College in Newhall.

On Saturday, Allen walked away with the MVP award at the Second Annual Hoops Classic All-Star Game at Long Beach City College, a game that showcased 30 of the premier players from Southern California, including four from the valley.

"It was good because the valley players really don't get much pub," said Allen. "This shows that we can play with anybody. I didn't expect to get the MVP award."

Allen, a unanimous selection for the award, finished with 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals. He was also 3-of-5 from 3-point range, two coming from NBA distance.

"I think my name is out there more," said Allen, who finished second in the state in scoring, averaging nearly 30 points per game. "I played at camps with some of these guys. I think (valley athletes) are starting to get more known."

Joining Allen on the West sqaud, which won 133-125, were Chad McDaniel from Lancaster and Chawn Johnson and J'Whon James of Antelope Valley Christian.

"I know all these guys out here. I'm always playing with them," said Johnson. "I enjoy coming out here. The Valley is stepping up. Next year I think we will have more athletes out here. It's always fun meeting new people."

Johnson finished six points and five rebounds in only 10 minutes of playing time. The 6-foot-9 Johnson said he has narrowed his college choices to Montana State, Northern Colorado, Portland State and Iowa State. He said he will make his decision probably in mid-April.

McDaniel had an impressive showing in the game. He finished with eight points, including 2-of-5 from behind the arc.

"I like the experience. Everyone out here knew how to play the game," McDaniel said. "The ball was distributed well. This was a very exciting experience for me. I really wasn't nervous, because this is something I've been doing all my life."

McDaniel said he will attend a UC school next year to study law. He said he may try to walk on at the school he attends.

James, who averaged nearly 18 points per game saw limited minutes, but enjoyed the experience. He said he hasn't decided where he will attend college next year.

"It was cool," said James. "There was a lot of talent on the floor. It was an honor to be out here."

Some of the schools represented were Westchester, which won the Division I state title, Inglewood, Mater Dei and Price, the Division V state champion.

Allen, probably the smallest player on the court at 5-foot-9, used slick moves and lightning quickness to break down the defense to get to the basket and make spectacular moves which awed the crowd.

"At first I was a little scared," Allen said. "But then when I touched the ball it seemed like normal."

The game was put on by the Nationwide Sports and Education Foundation (NSEF), a non-profit organization that mixes the importance of education and sports.

"I'm very excited about this," co-founder Robert Phillips of Lancaster said. "This is a good thing for the Valley. Maybe this will wake up people up and they can drive a little further (north) to look at some of these kids."

Phillips said that he hopes he can bring next year's game to Antelope Valley College.

Minutes - Allen (H) 25, McDaniel (L) 14, Johnson (AVC) 10, James (AVC) 8. Points - Allen 15, McDaniel 8, Johnson 6, James 0. Field goals - Allen 6-13, McDaniel 3-8, Johnson 3-5, James 0-2. 3-pointers - Allen 3-5, McDaniel 2-5, James 0-1. Free throws - Johnson 0-3, Allen 0-1. Rebounds - Allen 6, Johnson 5, McDaniel 2. Assists - Allen 6, McDaniel 1, Johnson 1. Steals - Allen 3, McDaniel 1. Blocks - Johnson 1.
