Billings Gazette Coverage
Why does the Gazette have such crappy coverage of the Bobcats? Bozeman is just up the road, but they really don't have a lot of stories about the Cats. Why is this? At least they have even less coverage about the Griz, but I would like to read more about the Cats for crying out loud!

Subscribe to the GF Trib. Even the Missoulian covers the Cats better than the Gazette. Chronicle is getting better.mquast53000 wrote:Why does the Gazette have such crappy coverage of the Bobcats? I really hate when they have long articles about Wyoming! I wish the people in WY wouldn't subscribe to the Gazette! Support your local paper damn it!iaafan wrote:The Gazette is of the belief that people in their area follow the U. of Wyoming. I think they consider BillInGs to be part of the U.S. first, because it such a BiiiiGGG city, haha and then Montana. Such a sophisticated, cultural hub that it is.

Yeah, Billings is pretty pathetic for Bobcat coverage. Of course the best coverage for the Cats in the state is BOBCAT NATION!mquast53000 wrote:I really hate when they have long articles about Wyoming! If you have to subscribe to a paper, the Great Falls Tribune is THE BEST for Bobcat Coverage though.

Lee Enterprises from Iowa owns the Casper paper, the Gazette, Livingston Enterprise, our Comical, Montana Standard, the Missoulian and I guess some weekly rags also. So the reporters transfer from one rag to the other when it's time for their "promotion" and they sometimes fail to leave their last town behind. Not sure, but I think they also own the Helena paper. We do have a lot of engineers working in Wyoming but I don't understand why we've always had such a fascination with their college.

To the Gazette's credit, they have two Colleges and a couple hand fulls of local area high schools to cover, which they do extremely well. They also put together good coverage of all the local semi-pro teams.
Overall I think the Gazette's sports section is better than any other state paper, but they'll never be the first place I turn for 'Cat news.
When you need 'Cat news now, it's Bobcat Nation for the win!*
*Okay, thats my weekly endorsement... wheres my five dollars, KMax?

I'm sorry, I think you misunderstood. We said you had to plug BobcatNation regularly or else pay us $5. With that one your tab is down to $275. Anytime you feel like paying up you can send it via paypal.GavinDonos wrote:When you need 'Cat news now, it's Bobcat Nation for the win!*

Note how they annouced the Griz players that were all Big-Sky academics....no Cats tho!mquast53000 wrote:Why does the Gazette have such crappy coverage of the Bobcats? Joe Kusak, "He Man Cat Hater" could have a lot to say what does and does not get covered. Especially when things like all academic Griz mentions but no Cats mentioned.
As for too many schools to cover...BS! GF Trib has 2 colleges and the same number of high schools in their area (GF, F. Benton, Have-Er) as well as the entire hi-line, and they cover both the Cats and Griz as well as anybody out there.
If the Gazette wanted to cover the Cats better, then Joe Kusak could simply say, "cover the Cats better."

My guess is that the Gazette and other papers do polls to find out what their readers want to see on the sports pages. The Tribune does a great job covering both MSU and UM. The Missoulian does the same for the Griz and Chronic for the Bobcats. I think people on BC nation are a little tough on The Chronic. I like the Chronicle, just cuz I can call it The Chronic.
They miss few scoops, but the writers aren't quite as experienced with MSU as the Trib guy is, but in one year they've really turned it around.

Although I'm still pretty upset with the coverage of the Cats, I agree that Welsh has brought a level of professionalism to the Comical that's still woefully lacking on the part of the Gazette staff. Welsch puts a great deal of time into his job and has never failed to return an email and acknowledge any mistakes he may have made. He's really dedicated to his job and seems to understand what MSU means to us and the state.
The Gazette and yes, I put Geisse into the same category as Kusek as an editor with an unfounded superiority complex. But I got spoiled living in places like Omaha, near Spokane, or the South where as a sports junkie (as most Montana folks are) the sports section is larger than any other section
Saying the Tribune is superior in coverage gives them too much credit. It still has a long way to go.
I'm also old enough to remember when the Gazette was one of the premier papers in the Northwest and the small high school coverage was better than the three high schools (at the time) in Billings. I tend to agree with mquast53000 in that the Gazette now sucks. I'd never subscribe to it if I didn't live in Billings today and wish our high school would drop the subscription.

I hear you Cat Pride. I've been waiting for this year's Kusek article regarding how chicken MSU is to play MSU-Billing in basketball. He beats that like a dead horse. I also find it funny that there not only is hardly any Bobcat info in the Gazette, but when they do put it in there ... the data/times are usually wrong (printed wrong time when Kramer was to show up at Hooligans etc).Cat Pride wrote:Joe Kusak, "He Man Cat Hater" could have a lot to say what does and does not get covered. The Chronicle (it's not Comical because I pay for the darned thing) missed the Jenny Heringer signing on Wednesday. It was an AP story, so I think they could have had it.
They've never deigned to print a story on Tricia Binford's assistant coaches, not even their names. The Tribune did a nice article.
Spring volleyball came and went without a word in the Chronicle, and there are stories for sure -- Jerry Wagner's non-renewal, one setter gone, a new setter signed, etc.
Jeff Welsch wrote his long article knocking schools and their nicknames, saying it was a slow news day. It is only as slow as you make it.
