How many times did you vote?

First let me start off by saying I am a U of M student and therefore more a Griz than Bobcat fan (root for both to do well, just the Griz when we play each other) and I like both sites. Both of you guys crack me up (soooo much alike) But I noticed the espn website thing and checked it out last week, and it was at like maybe 500 to 1000 votes...Now it's like 13000!!!! holy cats (no pun intended) but how many times did you people vote? Over a 100% increase in votes in just over a week? Man I like the Griz, but with that kind of support you guys deserve to win. I would like to see Dan the man Mortensen and Dave Dickenson tie though. They are both by far the best athlete reps for this state.

Don't care who you like...gotta respect super Dave

Are you suggesting that the ballot boxes have been stuffed by a bunch of Bobcat fans? I would suspect such a thing from Griz land, as they did with Monty, but not MSU fans. One vote, one person, the American way.

Go Cats

Shouldn't the state's rep for athlete be someone who exceeled at the highest level possible? i.e. Dave McNally who was a 20 game winner, won World Series games and even hit a grand slam in the series. Or how about Knievel ( who is a card carrying a$$) whose presence on Wide World of Sports is still the highest rated sporting event EVER. I believe that Jerry Kramer is in the hall of fame. The Pro Football Hall of Fame. Dickenson is the ONLY one on the list who never was the number one guy at his spot on a team or event that is on the list. He was a great qbin the big sky. THe rest were very succesful at the highest level. Leaf excluded.

Dave Dickenson stands all of 5'10 and exceeded at the highest level of every league he has ever played in. He was cut from the NFL and played well during the pre season mind you. Dave can only play the cards he is dealt, not his fault about the NFL, and last time I checked he certainly was a National Champion. As for stuffing the ballot boxes, um come on. I just don't see 15,000 extra people caring all of a sudden. (call me crazy) Look I don't care all that much, I am more a Dickenson fan than Griz fan. I have gone to three games total since I have been here. I couldn't help noticing the difference in votes. I went there last week and nobody cared, and then all of a sudden SHACKLACKY many votes.

P.S. about Monte, I think we were the smallest school in that thing. He got fifth in votes, but his program tape left them all in the dust. When Barry was here Monte simply was the best college mascot in the nation PERIOD. Ask the Chicago Bulls how they feel.

I'd like to throw Pat Donovan's name in here.

He made all state both ways DE and TE
He won a state championship in Basketball
He won three events at the state track meet Had the state record in the discuss I believe for a time.
He played for Stanford and was named a Kodak All American at DE
He was drafted by Dallas and played Offensive Tackle for about 10 years where he was named All Pro and has a couple of Super Bowl rings

that's pretty good I think

Helcat is right, Donovan had an outstanding career. As for Dickenson, he had success in college and in the CFL. In no way are either of those the highewst level. Does he merit consideration? Absoloutely. Is he the best athletic rep from Montana? Absolutely not! His status or lack thereof in the NFL was based on ability. It certainly was not a case of the man keeping him down. As for the cards he was dealt...he was given a chance in a system that would have fit. There were no unfortunate injuries or mishaps that kept him from making the team. I'll stand by the earlier comments about McNally, Knievel, Jerry Kramer and additionally Pat Donovan. Widmer had a pretty decent run as well.

Ok, You make some good points. All of those guys achieved high levels of achievement at the highest level of their respective sports. Dave Dickenson made the NFL. Did not really play, and was given several opportunities on several teams. He did not embarass himself (from what I saw) and achieved the best stats of ANY I-AA player. When it comes to I-AA stats, no one in the Big Sky has ever done as well. He still holds records NATIONALLY. He belongs and the category, and if he wins it won't be a shame. 5'10, that is why he did not make the NFL. I will debate anyone who says different. Whoever wins, I won't complain. But super Dave's my man. If not him Dan the man Mortensen. 7 national championships (and a former Bobcat so NO bias)...Ok, so those other guys are too old for me to remember. Biggest factor right there.

Until the rest of those guys get a statue of themselves, I'll stick with Morty. No one else on that list even comes close to the career he has had and he is not even close to being finished.

As for Dickenson, I don't think he has been given a legit shot in the NFL and I hope some day he does. No one wearing scour yellow and poop brown ever made me more frustrated.

1) Not many teams in the League are looking for a 30+ year old, 5'10" QB these days.

2) For those whining about DD not getting a "legit" shot; he got a better look in San Diego than any other team would have ever given him and he couldn't cut the mustard. PERIOD. Great 1AA QB? Absolutely one of the best. Great CFL QB? Yes. NFL QB? Sorry, but there's no way he was better than any team's #2 guy the last 10 years...

PS This is another example of a big reason why I get so fed up with griz fans. DD was a great 1AA player who won a National Championship and a closet full of awards. He's had a very good career in the CFL. Why is all that NOT GOOD ENOUGH for a significant # of griz fans? They continue to insist that he could've played QB in the NFL but he never got a "legit shot" to make a team. Bottom line is his combination of size and skills WAS NOT good enough for him to compete in the NFL. Give it up already, griz fans, and be thankful for what DD IS & WAS, not what you think "he could have been...". We don't run around claiming that Corey Widmer could have been a Hall-of-Famer if this, that, or the other thing had gone his way... (Although I do think Mark Fellows would have had a great NFL career had he not broken his hip...)

Regardless of who everone likes, doesn't like, or thinks who should be in the poll, the poll is set. So, lets make the best of it, and get out and vote.

Does anyone else find it humorous that Gato was actually quoting a Cat fan when he unleashed this barrage about how obnoxious Griz fans are?

yes, as a matter of fact, lawman, I was well aware that a Cat fan posted that. But it reminded me of ALL the folks over on egriz who brag that DD is NFL-caliber or that he has been screwed by the League. There are a surprising # of them, BTW.

GL-

Why does it matter who he was quoting? Gato was making his point why Dave should not be considered the best MT athlete. This is not the smack board so there is civil conversation in this forum. It turns out that not all Cat fans see eye to eye! The horror!

whats missing here is that DD put up his pre-season numbers against third stringers when he was with the chargers...also he didnt have the big contract so the chargers had to play either breese or flutie

personally i hope he does get another shot at the nfl

It matters (to me, anyway) because Gato was using the words of a Cat fan as a reason to attack Griz fans. I wasn't disagreeing with Gato's point about DD; I was disagreeing with the fact that he chose this time and place as the time to take a swipe at Griz fans, when it was actually a Cat fan who made the point he was disagreeing with.

If you try hard enough, you could probably take any thread on this entire board and twist it into a reason to slam the Griz, but that doesn't mean you should. Of course, anyone is free to slam anyone whenever they choose (within the rules of the board, of course), but I was just pointing out that it doesn't necessarily make sense to do so in this case.

You know...I really, seriously considered adding that to the point I was making about Gato slamming Griz fans; I can see now that the two points would have gone together like peaches and cream. I can *totally* see what you mean when you say that point was "missing" from my post. ;)

Check yourself and you fellow friz fans. MSU was in the lead on the polls for about a day, and I guess the friz fans couldn't stand to see it so they stuffed the box much like we supposedly did and now UM is in the lead. To quote you in a whiny voice, "How many times did you guys vote?!"

All friz fans are a bunch of hypocrites. Sit and b**** about how many times we vote and how unfair it is. Yet you all do the same thing. Shut your mouths and worry about yourselves. You know you'll all get your way in the end as usual.
