Kolone injury status?
Anyone have an update on his injury? G.F Tribune said he could be lost for extended period of time or even the season?

Goes to show the OL and DL are NEVER deep enough.
If Chris is lost for the season, is a medical redshirt out of the question? I know he redshirted at UofA, but at this point in the season, could he still qualify for a medical? I am hoping he is back for the NAU game. That would only be a loss of 3 games and a bye week.

Speaking of Mataikis. I saw him at the game on crutches. He must have just gotten surgery, because I've seen him around campus walking just fine.
It seems to me that you would want to operate ASAP with the posibility of coming back as early as possible (Cat/Griz, Spring Ball...whatever). I don't understand why we wait a month or so after the injury to operate.

It is my understanding that every player can have a non-medical red-shirt AND a medical red-shirt, provided the NCAA approves the medical reason.
Isn't that what Ochs got last year?
If so, I would think it's a given that Mac will recieve one & I see no reason why Kolone wouldn't as well, assuming that his injury is severe enough to end his season.
Speaking of Mac, I spoke with Momma Mac Saturday and she described his injury to me. It's a muscle that runs from the front of your hip laterally back toward your Glute. It essentially controls the "swivel" movement of your femur. They think he sustained it against SFA as he felt it at practice on the Monday following that game. He practiced on it all week & played with it all day vs Cal Poly. (Tough damn kid!) Apparently it was hurting pretty bad on the way home; the MRI showed a rupture of the muscle. I didn't ask if it was season-ending but she said the trainers told him they'd NEVER seen an injury like it; that didn't sound too promising to me.

If there is no immediate need to operate, as in say to get him back on the field for this season, then sometimes (depending on what the MRI shows) a doc will choose to wait for the inflammation to go down, which can lead to better surgical outcomes.wbtfg wrote:Speaking of Mataikis. I( thought he was improving and looking forward to playing in October...and then he re-injured it. He may have had a second surgery.BozoneCat wrote:If there is no immediate need to operate, as in say to get him back on the field for this season, then sometimes (depending on what the MRI shows) a doc will choose to wait for the inflammation to go down, which can lead to better surgical outcomes.wbtfg wrote:Speaking of Mataikis. I'm not sure exactly what muscle your talking about but being the recipient of 2 hip replacements I'm betting he's done for the year.
2 hip replacements both done a different way. 1st one, no major muscles were cut and it still took 9 weeks before I could go back to work let alone have any strength in the muscles. The 2nd time muscles were cut and it was 12 weeks. If he ruptured a major one, it's a long process even if he still is a young pup!

Andy Matakis had surgery about 2 weeks ago. I talked to him last weekend when I was at the Testicle Festival Mud Football Tourney. He said that it hurts to walk on it, but he didn't have his crutches that day and this was after his surgery. Maybe when he is around Kramer and the trainers he uses the crutches just to avoid drawing the "Ire of Kramer".

The muscle Mac tore was his obturator internus. This muscle is a part of your pelvic girdle. The muscle originates at the pelvic surfaces of the ileum and ischium (the bottom of your pelvis), and attaches to the greater trochanter of the femur (the knob on the outside of your hip). The muscle acts to rotate the thigh laterally (to the outside), and also assists in holding the head of your femur in the acetabulum (hip joint).

Re: Chris Kolone
Does this mean he's out for the year? Or is it a minor procedure?2Cats wrote:Kolone had surgery today.
I am also assuming that it's on the ankle side of things.

BOZEMAN, Mont. -- The injury bug bit the Montana State football
team hard Tuesday, as the Bobcats lost starting tailback Michael Bass to
a right knee injury.
Bass is officially doubtful for Saturday's game against Idaho
State pending further examination, MSU coach Mike Kramer said, but it is
possible Bass is lost for the season. The senior transfer from Hawaii
leads the team in rushing through four games, averaging 55 yards a
contest. He earned the starting spot for the season's second game.
"This is obviously a key loss because of what Michael brought to
this team," Kramer said. "We will move Jason Gathing back to tailback
(from linebacker), and call on Justin Domineck to regain his starting
spot. We have talented players at that position that we need to step
up."
Additionally, the Bobcats are likely without defensive lineman
Chris Kolone (knee), linebacker Mac Mollohan (hip), and linebacker Clive
Lowe (ankle) for Saturday's game. LB Grant Elliott (knee, back) and LB
Dan Ashley (hip) both remain doubtful this week, while WR Jevon Miller
is cleared to play this week.

No, players generally have 5 years of eligibility -- thus only one redshirt year. Ochs played at Colorado as a true freshman, so he had not used his redshirt, until his injury. Last year was his 5th year of eligibility.El_Gato wrote:It is my understanding that every player can have a non-medical red-shirt AND a medical red-shirt, provided the NCAA approves the medical reason.

On rare occassions, the NCAA will award a 6th year of eligibility if a player has missed two full years due to injury.
Since Mac played as a true freshman and the injury was early in the season, he has a chance at getting a medical redshirt.
